So I've been thinking of getting into Blood Bowl lately. My FLGS has a small league going, and I kind of want to jump in next season. What's the best way to get started if I'm not really interested in Humans or Orks? I want to play Chaos Chosen since they were by far my favorite team in the Cyanide game. Do I still need to pick up the starter box, or can I just get the Chaos box, a set of dice (probably Nurgle dice since the Chaos dice don't seem to be available on the webstore) and the 2018 almanac?

The only thing you will be missing is the core rules. GW made a bonehead move and the core rules are only in the boxed set. However, the CRP edition of the rules is freely available online and is the same rules wise. https://www.thenaf.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CRP1.pdf

Or, you could jump on ebay and grab the rule book separately.

The starter box is useful cause you get the pitch, dugouts and extra teams in case you wanna play with someone who doesnt have the game. But if you skip it the main issue is just getting the core rules and play surface. Sad to hear the chaos dice vanished though.

Okay. I kind of assumed the core rules were only available in the starter set. That's just GW's MO. Everything else I could get separately (just pick up the Chaos pitch). I may end up getting the starter set anyway, though. $100 is relatively cheap, and it would be nice to have a couple teams for my friends to play.

The winter pitch is great looking, it’s the only one of the extra pitches I’ve bought that was really good. There are also companies who make neoprene pitches that look great too.

You can also get the rules in epub format:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Blood-Bowl-The-Rules-ePub-2017

However, the boxed set is the only way to get the templates. You can do without the throw-in and scatter templates, but you'll need a throwing template.

There are so many custom team pitches out now, you don't need the starter box for that.

Here's what I recommend:
-dice
-team
-minotaur (optional)
-pitch (optional if other people have pitches, you don't need it)

If you want to go further, check out:

-rulebook from starter box (or pdf compilations or previous edition pdf, it is 99% identical)
-cards
-Almanac 2017 (or before mentioned pdf compilation)
-Almanac 2018 (or before mentioned pdf compilation)

The rulebook is ok, however they did use the much hated "advanced" section and the skills there are only applicable for demo games using orc and humans. You get the full skills and league rules in Almanac 2017.

If you want to go the extra mile, you can pick up an extra chaos team box and convert extra heads, extra arms, claws, big hands, tentacles and other mutations.

if you play as Chaos in a league be prepared for other people to not want to to play against you, especially if your players have started picking up skills or mutations.

I always used to prepare myself to re-stock my team roster after a match against Chaos, win or lose, because so many of my players would be maimed or killed.

So, awesome really.

I've always fancied having a Norse team personally.

I have piles of pitches but since getting the FW human pitch, that's the one that I use all the time now. (although I occasionally use a cloth pitch if I'm travelling just because it packs really small and has the dugouts and score/turn/reroll tracks on it)
