So recently, I signed up for a 40K Tournament that is part of the ITC circuit. Being a casual player and really only having played in local tournaments at my FLGS, this led me down a fascinating rabbit hole on the ITC website where I read through the different missions, scoring systems, faction standings etc. I think that on a micro level I understand what ITC is all about, but I am having trouble understanding it on a bigger, global scale in terms of the international 40K community. If anyone had the time, here are some questions I had ...

1) When is the ITC "season"? I read somewhere that the LVO is generally considered the end of an ITC season, but does that imply that there's an off-season or a pre-season?

2) How do the overall player rankings work? I know that player score is worked out according to tournament wins + victory points, but does that just mean that the more tournaments you play in the, hopefully, higher score you have?

3) Is there any difference in terms of a bigger GT event versus a smaller FLGS tournament that is ITC affiliated? Are the scores weighted different or is it just the scale of the events?

4) Is ITC affiliated with GW in anyway or do they just coexist peacefully alongside each other?

Thanks for your time!

So, first and foremost, I wouldn't worry about the season, or the rankings, since you're (a) new and (b) will only have played in 1 tournament.

1) The ITC season effectively ends with LVO. There is no "pre-season," it's just the period of time overall that you can earn points for your ranking for the calendar year. So the 2018 season will end with LVO in 2019.

2) You earn points based on how well you do in a tournament, and also based on the size of the event.

You have questions about scores, and yeah, it's basically like this:

You can have 4 RTTs (essentially, smaller, local game shop tournies) contribute to your score.

Majors + GTs can earn you more points because there are more people in attendance. For example, at a larger major event you might earn over 150 points for finishing in the top 5. Whereas finishing 4th or 5th in a local RTT will get you crap points, like 60 points.

GW depends on Frontline and some of the top-rated ITC players for playtesting and feedback. GW is god awful at playtesting and these folks have a direct line to GW to provide feedback.

I will also say, that just because a store is running an ITC event doesn't mean they'll be submitting the scores to ITC. They need to work this out with frontline and not all stores do it. They run ITC missions and rules, but don't submit. So even if you win, you might not see your score updated! I won 4 tournaments this year that aren't reflected in my score :(

RTT's usually consist of 3 rounds of play, thus even if you max out your points (30 primary and 12 secondary) you can only ever earn 126 points.

Majors usually consist of 5 rounds and have anywhere from 30-70 people attending. You can thus earn up to 210 points from them.

GT's (grand tournaments) consist of 6+ rounds and thus can net you an insane amount of points if you win them.

Your ITC score only takes so many events into consideration over the course of the year. Even if you attended 50 tournaments, you'd only ever use your top 5 scores. Your also required to attend at least one major.

If you have the intent to make it into the top 10 (prize area) you would almost definitely need to attend 5 majors/GT's to even have a chance, and most likely need to win at least 1-2 of those.

Wait, so even if I've got 5 events scored. If I do better than it'll override a previous score? This making my rank higher possibly.

Yes, you only use your highest score(s)

If you haven’t played any itc missions before I’d suggest trying to get in at least one practice game first as the progressive scoring is quite different (and better) than book missions.

Oh I've played a dozen or so ITC games(sadly only half were actually recorded to ITC). I just didn't know you only used your highest score. I assumed it was your first 5 games then everything after that doesn't count.
