Finally I have freed up some time and created a little painting booth in my new home. I now have the space to start painting, for the first time ever. So the nid below is my first attempt ever at painting...
As a rough mental reference I have this picture of hive fleet titan in my mind. Not sticking to it to strickly though.

First couple of base coats are applied and basic rough highlites. (on the carapace it is a bit much so will fix)
Next up shading and highlites.

I use this model to get a feeling for painting and develop the colorscheme. After this one is done the rest wil follow.

Any tips? Do's? Dont's?

I love this colour scheme, especially the purple blend that you've achieved. A very good start, good luck with the rest of the bugs, and welcome to DakkaDakka!

The little guy looks good! I really like that purple too, it fades very nicely.

You have a good start going, and i'm looking forward to seeing more.

Awesome color scheme. Hope you are going to paint some warriors in the same style?

Thanx,

Love some warriors, they look pretty cool and tanky in combat.

For the moment i still have a bunch of genestealers ready to paint so after finishing my reference model i will do the rest of this batch. Hormagaunts and genestealers

Looks like you're off to a great start with the scheme! Regarding tips, I'd change the tail to flesh instead of the gray shell, and color the teeth gray, like the claws. You could add some texture to the carapace by doing those "stripes" that can be seen for example in the 'Eavy Metal Tyranids. The joints also need some color.

Wouldn't it be a "Kill and eat team" if it's tyranids?

To be fair, opponents don't need to be dead before the team starts to eat

Nice start And I also love the blend.

As everyone else said, great blending. I like the spots a lot too.

Very cool work on the purple fade.

some CC.

The teeth being white but all the other non flesh bits being grey seems odd to me.

The grey being neutral is fine but it feels unfinished imho.

maybe blending some color into might help. like a dark blue to keep it still very grey or possibly more in the red direction. or go nuclear and try an orange or yellow.

would be interesting to see the carapace claws and teeth done in a sepia wash orange yellow with dark striations in a similar way the dots and purple was done would be interesting and would pop off the purple but since the purple is fairly minimal and the base is flesh, it might not work.

Thanks for the feedback (pun intended )

Totaly agree on the teeth and bone difference. teeth needs to be a bit darker and claws a bit lighter. Also agree on the non finished look, it is unfinished needs another round of base colors than washes and highlights.
more texture / color on the carapace. check
A bit in doubt about the tail though, i know it is supposed to be flesh but this makes them more elongated somehow. probably just test it though.

so recap:

- color / texture on carapace > purple stripings / hue
- teeth and claws more as one > light gray with wash
- tail test > fleshy bits with purple blend
- more color in the joints > purple
- washing > sepia
- highlights > overall to do

Finally found some time to paint, after sickness, christmas, birthdays and more sickness....progress is slow but fun

I tested various carapace options however liked the plain grey best.

I would love to add some greenslime, anybody some good tips how to do that? Super vibrant green slime around te teeth and claws. (thinking fluoresnt ink mixt with glue?)
