Hello

Recently I've been painting a few GW miniatures, after taking a break of a few years, and with the current paint range I am finding it difficult at times, with certain colours, to know which paints to use when it comes to highlighting.

Before the revamp and expansion of their range of paints I found there was somewhat of a clear/logical path in terms of which paint to start with as a base, then which paint to use as first and second highlights, without having to mix paints, and thus I mostly knew which paints I needed to buy.

Now I can't get mey head around it as there are so many different paints of the same sort of colour!

Red for example - do I start with Khorne Red then go Mephiston Red then Fire Dragon Bright or some other red/orange, or do I start with Khorne Red then go Wild Rider Red then some other red/orange?

Yellow is another one I find confusing. I could start with Averlund Sunset as the base, but then how do I know which of the two yellow layer paints (Flash Gitz and Yriel) to choose as 1st highlight and does the other even work as a 2nd highlight?

I have no idea what the "logical" progression of painting/highlighting yellow is now, unless I have access to all the paints, so that I can look at each one in the pot, which I don't, and I'm not travelling 11-16 miles on public transport to my nearest GW store just to look at a bunch of paints, and being on a tight budget I simply cannot buy the whole range of one colour just to find out what I need!?!

Does anyone here have any kind of chart or other solution to this conundrum?

Thanks in advance.

You have to be very careful these days when buying GW pots, there is 2 different ogryn skin tone wash, 1 with gloss and 1 without, same goes for earthshade and nuln oil.

It depend on what kind of red you are after, and what primer you use, I always use black primer, I like my red to start with a dark brown like rhinox hide-doombull brown-mephiston red-any of the lighter red/red orange as highlights; I find the new range of dry pots to be useful as highlights, especially for flame effects, ethereal and regular alike; the technical paints are quite good too, their name= speciality.

Yeah just google citadel paint chart to get the chart posted above. Also you'll notice the paints are labeled as "Base" or "Layer" depending on what they were intended to be used for.

As the chart above shows, its still, more or less, like that. The large number of similar Layer paints saves you from having to do as much mixing to get the right colour.
That said, I'm fairly certain that some of the Layer colours are the same, either that or my eyes are shot, which is probably more accurate.

You start with the Base, of which there are fewest colours, then you wash and either dry brush or apply layers, your "first and second highlights".

You apply 1 Base, 1 Shade, then 1 or more Layers.
That said, you can always use the Base for a 2nd layer if you thin it down.

Also, if you have an Android or iOS smart phone or tablet, get the Citadel App, it contains examples and how to use the different paints for the effect or colour you want.

The Citadel painting app can also give you a handy guide that you can carry with you. It's not the best thing since sliced bread but it can help.
