Just saw this on the Vallejo website and hadn't seen any mention of it on Dakka:

The Vallejo Hobby Paint Sprays are a perfect combination of base coat and highly pigmented color, developed for use on all metal, plastic and resin models and miniatures.

Our new original and unique AV spray formula leaves a perfect matt and self levelling finish, designed to respect and bring forth even finest details of the models and miniatures.

The Vallejo Hobby Paint Spray assortment includes 3 Basic colors, 19 Fantasy shades, 5 WWII AFV and 4 WWII Infantry colors.

The new Spray Colors are a perfect match to the equivalent shades available in our Game and Model Color ranges, so both painting techniques can be combined.

Each Hobby Paint Spray shows the original color applied on the colored ring around the top and is equipped with 2 different nozzles; one with a low discharge flow, especially recommended for fine lines and small details, and the other with a medium discharge flow, recommended for thicker lines and for covering larger surfaces; the low-pressure valve allows for excellent spray control.

The range is complemented with 3 different varnishes- Gloss, Matt and Satin- recommended for providing extra protection when handling your figures and to give them an overall uniform appearance.

Packaging:
The range is available in a 400 ml. / 9,31 oz. / 264 g. can.

Hobby Spray Paint is equipped with Skinny & Pocket cap

Skinny Cap

Low discharge flow. Especially recommended for fine lines and small details.

Pocket Cap
Medium discharge flow. Medium line. Recommended for thicker lines and covering larger surfaces.

That is awesome. Not surprising that they're tapping into the spray can market, as it's one of the major selling points of the Army Painter and Citadel lines to have a spray can that matches their regular acrylics. If I didn't have an airbrush I would be very interested in this as the majority of my paints are Vallejo.

Yeah, I haven't found any online retailers in a brief search but maybe if the word gets out about these paints they may become easier to find.

It appears to be roughly 9.2 oz. vs. 13 oz. in a standard can of, say, Army Painter. If they could sell these for $8-10 a can, they'll dominate (particularly if their quality matches up with everything else they do).

If they launch them at a premium like $15, they'll be dead on arrival. Really excited about this - I own dozens of cans of AP and it's how I do 99% of my miniatures.

Spoiler:

9.31 oz. per Vallejo, so slightly smaller than GW's which seem to vary around 10 oz.

Are they using "base coat" in the primer sense or the base color sense?

I think they mean this is like Army Painter stuff ---- primer and base coat. I could be wrong, but that's how I read it. Very much like the Battlefront cans, the Plastic Soldier Company cans, the GW base coats, etc.

Damn. They are like 10 years behind but I am sure it will still sell. As long is its a better value than GW paints there will be a market for it.

They're definitely behind, but Vallejo is a very successful brand, and I'd imagine they'll get the formula and quality right. If priced properly, I know maaaany people who'd gladly buy these over GW or AP alternatives.

Also, their initial range already out-does any other company's range who produces a similar product - so that's something. Sadly it's hard to find PSC or FOW sprays in the US, but those are far smaller ranges.

If somebody like Neal at the Warstore can carry these, it'll be a solid seller.

They really ought to include the word "primer" or "undercoat" somewhere in the description to avoid confusion. Oh wait, compare the descriptions for these https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Chaos-Black-Spray-GLOBAL AND https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Base-Kantor-Blue I guess it's kind of acceptable for Vallejo working in a second language, but GW ought to know better.

Anyway I use a lot of Vallejo so these cans are a welcome addition.

This isn't vallejo's first foray into spray primers. They used to have the standard colours anyway, I don't know if they eventually discontinued them or they just declined in popularity, but I used to buy them about a decade ago. They were trash. I had so many bad experiences with them I almost stopped using spray primers. Eventually I found cheaper automotive primers (simoniz here in the UK) that blew pretty much everything else out of the water.

It was especially disappointing because I've always loved Vallejo paints. Until GWs most recentish revamp of their paint line, I'd say Vallejo were easily my favourites.

Not to say that these new primers will be rubbish. I'm sure they'll be great. The company as a whole really seems to have expanded into a bunch of different hobby areas quite effortlessly over the last few years and the quality has been excellent. I'm definitely going to pick up a few.

These aren't really 'primers'. They're spray can versions of some of their Model Color and Game Color paints just like GW's spray cans are of some of their Base and Layer paints.

And this isn't really a semantic point that needs to be made, endlessly, every time discussion of paint happens. "Primer' has two meanings in relation to paint, one technical, one colloquial, and everybody already knows we're using the colloquial term.

Maybe the choice of nozzles means they won't constantly clog up like Armypainter cans. I have never been able to use more than half a can of those before they wreck themselves and the spray suddenly comes out like a pee stream, and then clogs up the inner ring forever.

No, not everyone knows that. I frequently have to explain to people that the GW sprays are only paint, not primers. Primer is a specific type of paint for a specific purpose. If it’s just a base coat paint, just call it paint. Don’t call it primer.

Actually it is necessary. 'Primer' for most means an undercoat that you paint your base coat over while this can be used as the base coat as well as the 'primer'.

Just to add to that there are fundamental differences and its an important one to understand because it dictates whether these products can stand on their own or require you to go buy one more thing.

Paints and Primers are both composed of resins, binders, and a suspension medium and differences are predominantly a matter of proportions and the way the pigment laden resin form their matrix across the part.

Except, again, this is not a point that needs to be made, endlessly here or to random people IRL.

Firstly, "primer" as in the kind of paint and "primer" as in the paint you intend to use as a primer coat are both common parlance, and the latter term does not necessarily relate to the former.

Secondly, you do not need a specialist primer paint to prime models, as evidenced by the millions of people over the years who've been doing perfectly fine with GW's bog-standard paint-inna-can "primer" sprays.

So you're not providing some crucial service by imparting vital and necessary information, you're just muddying the issue for the 99.9999999999999% of people who's question is purely and simply "will this work as the first coat of paint on my miniatures", to which the answer is "yes".

And I feel it's a point that does need to be made, as Vallejo does make primers and this product is not one of them.

I have never heard anyone refer to paint as a primer who did not think it was actually a primer.
