Just a touch. I mean, Bolt Action for best range? With all the stuff that's come out this year, seriously?

I don't know, going to the parent site loads a ton and I mean of ton of chinese banner advertisements.

Warlord games is one of two companies trying to bring historical wargames to the larger mass-miniatures market. That always gives them a larger pool of potential voters than the traditional 'grognard' companies. They have a natural edge in these kind of things.

The magazine is largely focused on historical gaming, of which WWII is the most prominent right now, so it's not too surprising that their readership would be largely more interested in the same.

Wow are those awards a joke. I was thinking of buying a copy of the magazine to check it out (and get some free boat sprues), but now the thought makes me sneer unconsciously the way my dog sneers at the BB-8 ornament whenever it gets within 16" of his face.

It’s reflective of the readership, though I’d disagree with the customer service one as so many of Warlird Ganes customers seem to think it’s good service that warlord provides the parts that should have been present in the first place....,

Range wise Warlord has expanded by working with Italiano and over the last year has diversified into more niche forces such as France, Belgium and alternate history operation sea lion.

It sort of is... One of the main metrics for customer service is how well they deal with issues. If they do that in a prompt and friendly fashion, then that's good customer service, and is an entirely separate issue to quality control.

It was a popular vote. Obviously mostly readers voted, and they voted according to their interests. I don't know how stuff got nominated tho. I voted and the selection was equally slanded, I think.

Must admit I’m a bit of a warlord fan but I really do believe they have great customer service too. A couple of times they’ve taken a bit longer to reply to a question I’ve sent than I’d like but when asking if I can get a part separately they’ve sent them for free.
Plus as for missing parts I’ve never found it an issue with them or suffered from any miss casts with their resin or metal. Unlike say forge world where they’ve sent some right crap out in the past.
That’s just going off of my dealings with them Mind.

Yes, I understand that there is some selection bias, and we've all seen popular votes create monsters, but my distaste for historical wargames will brook no rationality here, dammit!

If you distaste historical wargames why would you even bother buying a magazine focused more on historical wargames that came with miniatures for a historical wargame?

That's some grade A poor logic right there.

It's even funnier when you consider all the glaring historical errors, especially in lesser known countries, or the fact good 60% of the "range" is copy pasted from other countries due to lend-lease on allied side, soviets supplying minor armies on the other, and german captures on third. Some vehicles serve in almost every single army, reminds me how everyone in 40K used Rhino in the beginning

If so, why is Frostgrave and Rome among the winners?

I have a feeling they just pretended all votes for GW didn't exist, say what you will about them but in some categories GW offerings from this year alone easily beat whole ranges the competing companies had ever produced. To not get even top 3 mention? Naaah...

I did say 'largely' rather than 'solely'...

The magazine does feature some articles on non-historical offerings, like Frostgrave or GoA, both of which I suspect are more going to be more commonly acknowledged in historical circles due to their connection to Warlord and Osprey.

Considering all wargaming magazines never mention GW or only at most as a passing comment. I don't see the confusion them not getting any attention.

No, it's different logic than you are used to. I've expressed my interest in the ship sprues as fodder for BFG conversions before, and spending ~$10 for some bits I might ruin is far more palatable than spending Warlord's ridiculous asking prices for the same sprue (maybe two) and a bunch of cardboard box ballast/rules. There might also be a few painting or modelling articles worth reading before I donate the magazine to someone who will value it. My threshold for magazine value is very low; I have a subscription to MAD magazine after all.

Yes. That is probably the most popular "historical" time period.

I have always said that WWII Germans and Imperial Roman Legions are the Space Marines of Historical gaming.

Have been reading Wargames illustrated on and off since about 95-96, ww2 has always been a big focus in there so it really shouldn’t be a suprise to people.

Pick a position. Or is the logic in play alternative, like some facts?

If the magazine is of no interest to you except for the boats, what's up with your post below?

The content of the magazine has no bearing on the utility of those boat bits. Gotta agree with ValentineGames, the logic here is wobbly.

Points for the MAD Magazine sub., though. Didn't know that was still in print.

Opinions are funny like that. You think GW put out good stuff this year. I think it's been a flaming pile of dog doo, and I'm not a GW hater.
Possible that a mainly historical modelling magaize, would have readers NOT into bigger Magic Space Knight variant #105?

Well, aside from some obvious hyperbole--I don't hate anything the way my dog hates BB-8, but this is the internet--I don't see the disconnect. I said I wanted to check it out and get free boat sprues. My other post says that I want to buy boat sprues and see if there's anything worth reading in the free magazine. Basically $10 is easy impulse purchase money, and I can see value in either or both the sprues and magazine depending on whether or not they suck. It's ten dollars. For older posters, that's like saying I want to pay ten cents and get a Bazooka Joe gum and comic in one package. Am I getting a free comic or free gum? Does it matter?

But if Bazooka Joe tried to push historical wargames on me, I'd stick to Doublemint thank-you-very-much.

And yeah, I have a problem with the fact that GW, KDM and Malifaux all lost best miniature or range to Perry or Bolt Action. That's insanity.

Probably because they're better than GW and KDM is extremely specialist and difficult to buy and Malifeux simply isn't stocked much anywhere. If at all.

That's a lot of subjective opinion there. And why should the fact that a range be specialist or not high street purchasable mean that it isn't considered? While Kingdom Death isn't hugely to my taste, the range blows the hell out of Perry and Bolt Action. Almost embarrassingly so.

Well this is one that I can see going around in circles, also it’s based on someone’s point of view.
As for me well while I’ve enjoyed puttin the odd gw kit together this year I’d hate to think of the hours I’ve sunk in to putting together bolt action stuff and still not finished my back log of kits.

Range is more than quality.
Kingdom death produces limited run figures and doesn't have a huge range regardless.

Perry covers dozens of periods with dozens of plastics per period and hundreds of metals.

It's a no brainer.
And again it's a Wargaming magazine that concentrates 75% of its attention on the biggest wargaming market. Historicals.
Not NSFW collectors items.
It's comparable to saying Bugatti should win best car manufacturer because they made a 1000hp car with a dumb name one time that nobody can own in reality instead of some sensible company who produce dozens of cars anyone can own to suit their needs.

GW pretends the hobby doesn't exist outside of their walled garden, why shouldn't mainstream wargaming return the favor?

Frostgrave and Gangs of Rome are both produced by historical wargames companies. GW tried historical wargames once and washed their hands off the entire industry as not being profitable enough.
