Hi

What’s the closest space marine chapter based on Western European culture ?

Just that am looking to start my own chapter eventually.

I’ve seen the Storm Wardens and they seem a bit Celtic.

...Not sure what you mean by "Western European". Most Space Marines are fairly European simply by virtue of the whole central "monastic knightly order" thing; if you want to draw direct parallels to history/real-life cultures of the First Founding Legions the Imperial Fists (fairly German), the Ultramarines (Greco-Roman), and the Dark Angels (conspiracy-theory dark-secret monastic Catholicism) are probably the most European.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

dark angels (medieval vibe), blood angels (renaissance Italy vibe), and ultramarines (Greco-Roman vibe) all have the Western European vibe. don't feel shy though to make your own chapter! don't forget can use blood angels or dark angels codex and make a successor chapter with your own color scheme

That's actually about 90% of all GW Chapters. The most obviously European are in my opinion, the Ultramarines, the Black Templars and the Space Wolves.

Yeah I should have given some more detail.

Am looking for a German or British feel so maybe like you’ve said a Dark Angels successor or an Imperial Fists one.

I like the Ultramarines because of how they treat civilians so am looking for a DA or IF successor that are looking out for the little people.

If you want a chapter that looks after the little dude, check out the Salamanders. They're culture is pretty unique, though, without obvious real world parallels.

I would say that the white scars are very Asian in inspiration.

Off of the top of my head

Ultramarines - Rome, Greece, and Anatolia
Imperial Fists - Germanics
Dark Angels - English Catholics, possibly some Semitic influences in naming conventions. Previously NA Native American
Salamanders - Greece
Iron Hands - Greece
Blood Angels - Italy
Space Wolves -Scandinavian

Hell the only real exception to European themed Legions is the Thousand Sons and White Scars. Otherwise everybody is some facet of Europe, or a descending culture.

Agreed, but I definitely get some of that from Dark Angels too.

Order of Knights, and the secrecy plays into Templar myths.

That's going to be a bit tougher as Space Marines are notoriously cruel, arrogant and dismissive toward anything that is human with the notable exception of the Salamanders who have more of a Indian design and culture and the Lamanters. The later are a Blood Angel successor Chapter cursed with terrible misfortune, but immense heroism, they happen to suffer very little if at all of hte Black Rage because their Apothecaries are also shrinks. Who would have thought that a mental health problem cold be helped with the support of a mental health specialist?

If you want an Imperial Fist or DA successor, i would recommand to create one yourself for simplicity sake. There might be one that fits the bill, but both Chapters are known to be particularly notoriously cruel, arrogant and dismissive toward anything that is human.

I’ve never thought of the Lamanters could be a nice pick.

How do the Blood Angels treat civilians must be better than the IF or DA?

The Lamenters are by far my favourite chapter, even if it's a lesson in masochism to paint them.

Most Blood Angels and succesors are terrible toward civilians. The Black Rage and their vampiric practices have led the at least one Chapter actually prey on civilians (I think it's the Angel Vermillion, but I'm not sre) and the Fleshtearer were almost pruged because they are so consumed by the Black Raged they massacred their own allies. Sisters of Battle try to attack both these Chapters on sight should their path cross, which is fortunately extremely rare, due to those problems.

Lamenters are the exception and the exact opposite of these two Chapters. They don't or almost never suffer from the Black Rage and are dedicated to the protection of civilians. They have sacrificed themselves to free slaves and protect pilgrims on several occasion and refused a great honor from Marneus Calgar after a battle where they couldn't save all the civilians and thus considered the battle a defeat or at least not worthy of such praise. Sisters of Battle, who generally hate most Blood Angels and are suspicious of hte rest, love and admire the Lamenters. They restored and blessed their broken banner and wept for them so much for the sacrifices of the Lamenters, the banner is known as the Banner of Tears. Their battle cry is "For those we cherish, we die in glory". They are currently fighting Hive Fleet Kraken resurgeant tendrils as part of an ongoing penence Crusade for having fought against the Imperium for a portion of the Badab War.

That’s a shame about the Blood Angels.

So that’s the Imperial Fists and the Dark Angels two.

I know the Salamnders are nice also the Space Wolves help civilians out.

Raven Guard are pretty good to I think.

What about the Ultramarines I collect them because of there lore. I like that they work/help regular people out well in there mini empire anyway.

Nearly forgot the Iron Hands are meant to be pretty bad to regular people.

It’s strange that the Crimson Fists are nice to civilians but the BT and IF are a bit off.

That's because during the 2nd founding, they split mainly along ideological lines. Those who supported Dorn the most, and who resented the codex as a necessary evil to prevent Horus Heresy 2: Electric Boogaloo remained as the Imperial Fists. Those who felt the codex was a good thing formed the Crimson Fists (albeit with their own rituals sprinkled on top of it) and those who were "absolute lunatics" (to quote Dorn from If the Emperor had a Text-to-Speech Device) followed Sigismund to form the Black Templars.

Imperial Fists are stoic to a fault. They won't actively go out of their way to put civilians in harms way/cannon fodder like some other chapters, but they are very much a chapter of "We have a mission, and it's not to protect the civilians."

As far as I know, Raven Guards are nearly as bad as the Iron Hands. They use guard units like cannon fodder and baits. Don't inform their commanders of their intention and are using them carelessly as diversion to make their infiltration and sabotage units succeed.
