I was doing an image search on google a few minutes ago and came across one of my own hobby images that I uploaded to dakka but on a different url. I clicked on it and found a clone of dakka at a different site. I probably should have done it first but after the fact I ran an online virus check and didn't find anything malicious there. Is this an official backup of dakka or an unauthorized clone?

Weird!

Maybe it's a shared server thing? The Comm Guild is a Maelstrom's Edge site, which legoburner is also the administrator for, and as ingtaer noted insaniak creates a bunch of hobby content for. If lego was backing the site up maybe something like this could be an artefact of that?

I wasn't aware of Insaniak's and Lego's involvement in that site so it does make it obviously less sketchy. I didn't try logging in so as not to compromise my account but I did notice that it was very up to date with forum thread posts from earlier today present (so it's not an old copy/backup).

I'm not across whatever goes on in the background, but I suspect that it's either a mirror for backup purposes, or just a peculiarity of the way the DNS is set up - I think Dakka and the Maelstrom's Edge sites share some server resources.

Lego? It's just a curiosity rather than an issue in all likelihood but I am still curious as to the origin of that dakka clone.

A few years back a photography forum I'm on found user images on another site. For some obscure reason the site cloned/copied EVERYTHING that was publicly shown. Threads, profiles, photos - everything!

We never worked out what they gained from it or why they did it. The forum did rank well in google so it could be they were hoping to cream off some of the clicks or something.

In the end the site owners got the clone taken down (photographers are a testy lot when people start copy-posting their photos around without permission).

But it was odd and it does set the standard that there are those who appear to have a vested interest in cloning other sites and even forum contents.

I'm sure Lego will be along sooner or later with a perfectly normal and rational explanation, this is in no way connected to the server clocks being a few minutes into the future and other such.. incidents.

Until he responds, I'm going to go with the most reasonable explanation.

Now that the forum has been successfully cloned, the next step is to replace the mods with poorly detailed PVC copies of themselves.

Ahahaha, we didn't just clone the forums, we cloned everything, including the user base. Sometimes one manages to break free and that's why you get the odd double post every once in a while.

That's your clone trying to break free.

Wait but which is the clone and which is the real?

Is this the real forum or are we the clone and the other site is the real one!?!?!?

The comm guild is also our website (for Maelstrom's Edge) that is on the same server.

So nothing to worry about.
