Hi everyone

I've been entertaining the thought of starting an AOS army, i really like the skeletons, zombie dragons and the like from the LoN. i know that they do best in hordes but i hate playing hordes.

Is there a competitive or semi competitive (as in i dont wanna get tabled on turn 1-2) way to play them using a low count of minis?

Grand Host of Nagash lets you run grave guard as battleline, with which 20 man units are a good way to go. The most competitive way to run Legions at the moment is using Nighthaunt (chainrasps & grimghasts) however.

AOS skirmish comes out in an updated version in january ( or so I heard)

Warhammer underworld has low count model skelletons.

But skelletons do spell out hordes no?

Although Monster spam might work in a semi competitive environment. the skelletons will in that case just be there to get to battleline requirements ...

interesting
i know that playing skelletons kind of implies the use of hordes so alternatively to that, is there a build you know from the legions of nagash that could be more elite-like and still be semi competitive?

thx in advance for the help and tips c:

Run Grand Host of Nagash with three 15 to 20-man grave guard units as battleline with a general that has the Lord of Nagashizzar command trait. Throw in whatever else you like.

Also fyi... If you are running Legions of Nagash it is semi-competitive at the least. It is a top-tier battletome that is absolutely OP in a casual setting.

Legions of Nagash is definitely not a casual book and if you are playing casually with it you need to understand how to dial back tremendously.

Skeletons are horde in nature largely because they get massive benefits for being a horde, and additionally get a massive point discount for being run that way, making them on the top end of the game's overall bell curve for points cost vs effect.

Elite LoN aren't that strong tbh, the army lives and dies based on Summonable units, a lot of which are meant to be played as hordes.

If you want to try a low model count try units of Spirit Hosts with a VLoZD giving them rerolls to hit and a Necromancer casting Vanhel's on them. You can get a stupid amount of mortal wounds, they're quite tanky and easily brought back/healed.

As for elite elite - blood knights are meh, Vargheists are meh, Morghasts are decent but not groundbreaking, Hexwraiths are too expensive for what they do, Black Knights are decent. But we'll never be an elite army, we need our hordes, we need the Summonable bodies.

I'm trying to make elite Nighthaunt work, which is showing more promise but mainly due to Bladegheists.

Morghasts are crazy good in Grand Host--the extra attack on the glaive (because the dual weapon option is strictly worse) does wonders. They have good use in a Legion of Blood screamer list too. But really it goes back to LoN being so good that a skilled player could pick their army at random and probably do fine at a casual level. One would have to specifically go out of their way to actually make them bad.

I'm so gunna try that now...

Morghasts are quite flimsy I found. Then again, my meta is more cut-throat than most.

But yes, all in all LoN will always be good in casual games, in that way they're a great battletome because you just grab the units you like and you can still do well. However, at a competitive scene it's not as easy as for some other factions. We have some synergy but now bucketloads, nothing like Seraphon for example.

It's hard to play our army badly, but it's not easy to make it super competitive.

It's totally easy; bring Nagash, chainrasp battleline, and a 20-man reaper unit.
