I was watching, just for the hell of it, some of the flash Gordon series made back in the 30's with buster crabbe. It was interesting to see just how much of star wars was inspired by it, and even some elements of star trek could be seen once in a while.

Also, despite having no real sfx tech to work with and pitiful budgets, the guys doing the series we're clearly trying to make the best they could. Thy had some great ideas and concepts, and they tried to make them work as best they could with what they had to deal with.

If you're a hard core SF fhan, you might want to try watching some of those hokey old episodes. They were the first SF adventure series', and a it of later SF was built on them.

What I find interesting is how TV SciFi went from arcing stories to episodic, back to arcing stories.

I know Flash Gordon wasn’t a TV serial, but it still stands

Yeah. But a cinema serial. Something long since passed before I was born.

But to see story arcs played out over multiple episodes? We didn’t really get that again until X-Files, and more properly DS9. (Because with X-Files, it was more a general undercurrent. YMMV!)

Semi-serial storytelling was always around on one show or another. Before X-Files, there was Werewolf, with the protagonist hunting for the one who bit him (and finding him, and even killing him). DS9 and B5 were the two successful series that showed a heavier emphasis on serial storytelling had a place in (less niche) genre television.

To me, it feels like the MCU might be the closest thing we have to modern movie serials.

It might be cool for a film school to try redoing the original flash Gordon serials in color, but keeping the original tone and spirit.

HAHAHA. Erotic fiction is the best.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

That can't be real, surely?

Having said that, as a kid I once got bought a set Flash Gordon books, one of them 'The Witch Queen of Mongo' had bare breasts on the cover. Needless to say that one was confiscated by my mum, although I did read it before she saw it - it had something to do with a magic potion that made Flash a coward that would do literally anything she asked...

The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Track down the 1930s Captain Marvel (now Shazam) if you can. He drops baddies off the roof of a multistory building during a fight. But, from an FX standpoint, they did a really decent job of making it look like he could fly and even the thunderbolt transformations are respectable. They film a dummy flying down a wire from a building to the ground then reverse the film when it's played. It looks surprisingly good.

Well its pretty much the same in the movie, IIRC Aura's torturer has a chat with her dad about her sexual responsiveness and says no one has scored higher......
