I know when this was in development the hype was massive and then upon release it was a dud for many reasons.

My son picked it up for $20 on PS4 a few months ago and I started with it this weekend.

I rather enjoy it so far. Whatever updating they have done for it has been in the right direction.

I am not usually into survival/building games (i.e. Minecraft) so I was rather surprised at how involved I got in the game over the holiday weekend (15 hrs over like 3 days).

Space combat is a bit frustrating...my ship is slow and has crappy maneuverability...but what should I exect from a starter ship?

All in all I have been enjoying it.

I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends.

I think the “it’s trash” bandwagon everyone was jumping on at release was overblown to the point people were just gaking on it because it made them look cool/credible to do so, regardless of their experience with the game. I’ve always enjoyed it and welcomed each new addition as the patches rolled in. I commend Hello Games for continuing to support the game and give us content free of charge.

Not to say it’s free of flaws, the vision was greater than what they could deliver, there’s still things in there that bother me, but it’s a fun experience imho.

Open world space games suffer from one central problem: most of space is boring.

Some games deal with this by compressing space such that it's just the interesting bits (Freelancer): it's a small universe but most everything there is to do has entertainment value. Others take pride in their monotony (Elite : Dangerous): it's an expansive universe and you're just one dude trying to make their way.

No Man's Sky promised an expansive universe that was also interesting, based on the uniqueness of each system/planet...but all of it seemed rather blah.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

No, I bought it from launch and was dooped by the literal lies they put out about what was going to be in the game. At launch up until nearly a year, it was a boring, bare turd of a game and was missing most of what they promised.

Saying that though, it has come a LONG way since launch, and although I'm personally not a fan of the game, I totally get why it has fans now. There's a ton to do and it's pretty much a different game.
