What's the status on the legion of the damned in 8e? Are they being set up as a deus ex machina to save the imperium?

Last I remember, I think they were on the Phalanx/Cadia helping fight off Chaos Daemons before they were kicked off the ship. I don't think they've really been mentioned since.

Most likely GW are going to release them with a codex. The way GW are churning out armies makes me suspect that they are making good money for doing so.

Dunno if there’s enough on them to create a codes but this wouldn’t surprise me. Though we already have too many marine armies.

Ultra-Ultramarines are a great idea.

Yeah but GW love themselves some marines.

they'll probably ruin the lore for them by trying to cash in. the lexicanum entry has already started ruining it by explaining them as a lost chapter (fire hawks) just leave them a mystery. make them some models sure, but dont sell them out into something lame.

They were originally mutated Fire Hawks, then they became mysterious and now they're Imperial daemons (Master of Mankind).

Yes, the legion are one of the few things that have got more mysterious over time. Originally it was clear - they were the remnants of the Fire Hawks (and not even particularly supernatural). Now they're lesser Daemons of the Emperor.

Also, isn't it being led by the headless Ferrus Mannus?

Not that I've ever heard. The only "officer" ever described amongst the Legion is Sergeant Centurius. No-one knows who he was, but he's definitely got a head.

The Emperor's greater daemons seem to be the Sanguinor, Celestine and the other Living Saints.

Yes - but no mention of his head:

Shapes raged in the flames – shadows and suggestions doing battle with the daemons, their fiery forms indistinct and ever-changing. The fire-born avatars of fallen Ten Thousand, knee-deep in psychic fire and thrusting with lances of flame. The silhouettes of Space Marines, the betrayed dead of Isstvan bearing axes and blades and claws; half-seen sigils of slaughtered Legions obscured by the ash of their blackened armour. A giant among giants, its great hands bared and ready as it seared forwards at the crest of the tidal fire. The tenth son of a dying empire, so briefly reborn in his father’s immolating wrath

In Master of Mankind
Spoiler:
when the Emperor summons TLotD, Ferrus is present amongst them.

Now that's a hell of a headless horseman adaptation.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

Eldar Harlequins had a whopping 1 unit entry as well prior to their Codex release, and they managed to squeeze that into a Troupe + 4 different Character entries, then add bikes and 2 vehicles.
It would not surprise me one bit if LotD get a full on codex with Legionnaires as Troops, 1-2 Character types and several other "special" units added on.

If they follow Master of Mankind, they could add Custodes.

I could see current GW doing upgrade sprue to LotDify Custodes... But then we'd have 2++ deep strike anywhere units

The last Codex Legion of the Damned had one unit and a Relic. Back in 2nd edition (and in 3rd at one point, perhaps) their army list was briefly expanded out to include a couple of character types and dreadnoughts. Personally I hope they remain just as a single unit, although a new Veteran Sergeant Centurius would be nice. Make them all flame-wreathed and ... hollow, like the NightHaunt.
