Ok, flipside of another thread here. Name a popular movie you hate no matter how many people like it.

Indiana jones and the temple of doom. Ok, indy essentially kidnaps a woman from a nightclub, drags her into danger, puts her thru terror, she saves him and his kid from a deathtrap, then he gets drugged but she doesn't know it, she sees him he;lp people wanting to lower her into lava then saves her from the danger he dragged her into, and later acts like she owes him something? When he pulled her to him with his whip she should have kneed him in the groin so hard his balls shot out his ears. Far worse that "kingdom of the crystal skull".

Men in black. Erasing people's memories, mind control? Yeah, no. If that's what it takes to keep people from knowing there are aliens, screw it. Tampering with people's minds like that is worse than rape and i don;t want anyone having that power. If people can';t deal wityh aliens existing, xxxx 'em.They can go jump off cliffs. Don't mess with my mind to save some moron.

Avatar. Dances with blue cat people. How long till they do it? sigh.

Independence day. Star wars with F-15's.

I know there were movies i liked most people hated, so don't worry about stepping on my toes if you name one.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Alien 4 was the last Alien or Predator related film and even that I accept is partly more fan-service than it was a "true" alien film as such.

I think the better treat is to read the Alien comics that came out - those have some great stories and continuations of the storyline that are far superior to the newer films.

I found The Shawshank Redemption boring. The Matrix films unwatchable. I’m not a fan of either Pulp Fiction or Reservois Dogs. I also didn’t really like The Green Mile.

Transformers 1, 2 and 3, without any doubt. The only movies in my life that I started watching and didn't manage to finish.

The first one lasted almost an hour, transformers 2 just 10-15 min and I couldn't get over 30 minutes with the 3rd episode.

I also strongly dislike Alien 3. Generally speaking I litterally adore some Fincher's movies like Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl and absolutelly hate some other ones like Benjamin Button, Alien 3, Zodiac, The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which was flat out worse than the swedish tv adaptation. Stieg Larsson's trilogy are my favorite books of all times so maybe I had too high expectations, but I liked the swedish movies so I'd rate the american remake very low.

I don't know if someone likes Suicide Squad, i watched it because an italian won the accademy award working on that movie but it was absolutely terrible. DC movies are usually gak but this one was a complete mess, definitely among the worst movies I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of gak

Deadpool 1 & 2 are also movies that I hated to the guts, but I admit that's not my genre, I can't stand that type of comedies. The american comedies I like are those ones with Cary Grant, Doris Day, Jack Lemmon, Spencer Tracy....

Aliens 3 improves dramatically if you watch the Directors Cut edition of the film. I still rather like it, its the most classic of the sequel films that goes back to the loan alien hunter VS surviving people kind of story.

Harry gakking Potter and the fork awful Beasts films, I appreciate I'm not the target audience but between terrible child acting and fanfiction plots consider my buttons pressed

Age of Ultron, whilst not as clunky as Thor 2 or Iron Man 2 its bumbles on and on to the point even Olsen 3's appeal cant save it

Lost In Translation, not everywhere is 'merika ?, who'd have thunked

Dark Knight Rises, again far too long and suffers badly from repeat watchs

*also to avoid a repeat of every other film thread I moved for a ban on mentioning TLJ

I don't feel that naming contraversial films really fits the theme of this thread. Transformers films, for example, are almost universally loathed. Lost in Translation makes more sense, but I have yet to meet anyone who openly likes that film.

Silence of the Lambs. I thought Hopkins' acting was super hammy, but not fun hammy, and his character was written like the Mary Sue of serial Killers. "He did that without breaking a sweat." Then you see him in action, and old Obiwan was more spry. Jodie Foster was...forgettable. I don't have any connection to her character. The plot was typical crime thriller stuff, which might be amazing but just does nothing for me. Buffalo Bill was pretty great, though, and spawned many great memes.

The Shining. Yes, the Kubrick film. I saw it in college, on Halloween with a pretty girl, and the film was so tedious I almost walked out. I guess that Kubrick wanted the audience to find the kid and wife annoying so that we would find ourselves horrified with sympathizing with Jack, but I just didn't like anyone. The scares weren't scary. The hotel wasn't creepy enough. Nicholson had a great five minutes or so and a dozen fantastic expressions, but I can see those on dorm room posters anytime.
(I read the book first, but found it pretty forgettable.)

Apocalypse Now. Urgh. A few great lines and trainwreck-level drug induced scenes are all I remember. I read Heart of Darkness before seeing the movie, and I remember that much better.

The Dark Knight Rises-

I really hate all the subtext in the film about the need for surveillance state and all that other gibberish especially in the context of what was going on in the world at the time. Really pissed me off.

That said, I do not hate the movie, just the "message' it was trying to feed me.

Inception: No its not clever - Yes i did fething understand it. No its still gak,.

Its badly written, made of plotholes and re-writes its internal rules to fit whatevere flashy effects sequence the director wants to project and relies on the same specaticle to distract the viewers from seeing them but hey if you dare say anything bad about it you get patronised -" Meh you didn;t understand it." is trotted out.

My wife and I both hated this. My wife didn't make it past the first hour before falling asleep. I suffered through to final, overly digital battle and villain.
I honestly don't know why this film was so highly praised. It was a piece of boring crap with a poorly cast and lame villain.

True, but does anyone actually like his movies to begin with?

Tarantino movies are all bafflingly popular and each one is terrible. Just terrible.

Any movie with excessive focus on gore or torture. I.E. Silence of the Lambs.

I know people mostly don't "like" the Hobbit Trilogy, but I couldn't even sit through the first 20-30 minutes of the first one. It was an abomination.

I like most of Tarantino's movies, but Inglorious Basterds comes across as being murder porn. It has a couple of clever moments, but that's it.

I don't find Return of the King to be a good film and IMO it heralded the coming Hobbit disaster. The Fellowship of the Ring was the peak of the trilogy.

Crazy Rich Asians was a subpar romance film, even by the low standards already set for those films. Constance Wu is absolutely brilliant in Fresh off the Boat, to the point where I was stunned that she was actually good after seeing CRA.

I recently rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade after having not watched them for years. Previously, I had enjoyed them. Now I don't. They move at a break neck pace with no care for the plot and are pretty vapid films. Honestly, in pure quality, I can't say that either one is necessarily worse than something like Age of Ultron, but I expected a lot more from 'classic' films. IMO, they're probably the most overrated of the 80's blockbusters.

Is that a Reddit thing? I hear Nolan is like a god to some of them. In my experience, most people only remember Inception for the BWAAAAAs.

I don't remember any gore or torture scenes in Silence of the Lambs... Jame Gumb doesn't actually kill anyone during SotL, IIRC. They're all killed before the movie starts, [SPOILERS FOR A 27 YEAR OLD MOVIE] Catherine is rescued and Chilton is killed after.

EDIT - Wait, Pendleton. Yeah, he and his buddy get messed up pretty bad. I don't think either death is particularly gorey, though, and neither is tortured.

I like Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds and much of Kill Bill. His Grindhouse movie, Death Proof, is pretty much Tarantino at his most self indulgent, and it's unwatchable to me...except the scene where Kurt Russell eats a burrito, a surprisingly riveting scene.

His films have a style that you are either on board for or you hate.

If you hate "torture porn" I have a great movie for you, TO AVOID!

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064687/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1

This mess was made in 1970 by 3 different countries, because apparently no one country wanted t take the whole blame. It had one notable star in it, Michael Rennie, and was tragically his last movie.,

It was torture porn, in addition of idiot porn, moron porn, etc.

It's a bad movie and not in an enjoyable sense.

While michael rennie fans may want to see it, the fact it was the last movie he made makes it even more awful. Trust me, avoid this mess.

One note: They had Frankenstein in it, and apparently hammer films threatened to sue them if they used the name Frankenstein since it was acting like making a lot of frankenstein movies gave it toms ownership of the term. Well, instead of telling hammer to go feth itself as they should tyhey called the Frankenstein monster several names i the movie, one of which sounded like "Ferraxalon" which i took as the name for my iron warrior daemon prince.

The entire LOTR franchise (including the hobbitses movies).

Bored me to sleep.

Any Tarantino movie. I had a mate who was really into his style and who tried to get me into the cult. I joke that he's "dead to me now" (but he actually died, so it's kinda still true).

Avengers movies. A couple of the standalones were cool movies. The avengers group films had too much happening in each and rapid focus shifting between characters, but not long enough on any for me to give more than half a crap about any of them.
The batman movie with the Heath Ledger Joker in it. Bored me to sleep.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

He can't be 50 my dad loved the LotR films - or wait he could be 50 my dad is nearing 70 now...

As for the Avengers style films I can agree on that. Sometimes they work, but many times a lot of those "multiple super hero" films tend to fall flat. Suicide Squad (or whatever it was called) did this too. Basically they end up with so many character that they are trying to introduce at once that there's no time to introduce or setup nor invest the viewer in any of them so it all tends to fall apart. I think they possibly work better for those who are already big fans of the franchises. Ergo you could likely do a quick start up of batman and superman together fairly easily because most people know those back stories really well.

Yeah, the Dark Knight trilogy are some of the dumbest movies I've seen recently.

They consistently break their own rules and the characters do incredibly silly things simply for plot convenience.

Transformers.

I'd say Tarantino as well, except I get honestly confused when people say they like him these days, so I don't know if he actually counts.

Hobbit films were pretty bad (and dull). The LoTR series I don't mind as much, except for the needless melodrama in TT (Aragorn dying/missing) and COMPLETELY missing the plot with Faramir and Frodo.

Wonder Woman comes close. The final arc's plot is bafflingly stupid, and ends In a muddy mess of contradictory and failed ideals (the overall message of the film might well be you should just isolate yourself and never try to better the world), and boring CGI sludge.

Ah, I forgot the matrix films existed. Terrible pseudo-intellectual cliches that have been done better a dozen times before. Yes, even the first one.

My personal votes:

The Godfather
This is such a boring movie, I love the book, but this movie has put me to sleep multiple times. Like a lot of 70/80s movies, it has aged terrible. Never finished it.

Kill Bill
I like most of Tarrantino's movies, but the Kill Bill movies didn't do anything for me. Meh.

The Usual Supects
It just couldn't shake the B-movie flair, and I didn't like that at all. Acting was just bad all around.

And just so someone has said it: I openly like Lost in Translation^^

Rear Window is supposed to be on the podium of Alfred Hitchcock and one of the greatest thriller of all time, a major cultural influence in this genre of movie (drawn from an excellent novela too). While I did love Psycho and Vertigo a lot as well as many other Hitchcock movie I found this one very boring. I would also add Birds to this list. I didn't like the Halloween movies. I understand the first two are supposed to be excellent, but I found them fairly boring even though I must admit they inspired a genre of movie that excel in th domain of so-bad-it's-good.
