So, kind of an odd request/post, but here goes.

I'm planning to run a RPG campaign (Dungeon Crawl Classics with the Black Power, Black Magic fanzine) using RDR2's area as a sandbox for the players to explore, and I need help fleshing out the world.

The players arrive in Saint Denis after a 0-level "funnel" train ride (i.e., a deadly intro adventure where a bunch of nobodies will die, and anyone who survives becomes a 1st level character). The setting is before the Van Der Linde Gang arrives, so the prominent characters that Arthur and the gang wipe out will still be around for the players to interact with. The only change there will be the Skinner Brothers, who'll be active at the time (for the explanation, see below).

Here's what I've got so far for the setting so far. Since it's a sandbox, prominent areas need to have their own goings-on, but may affect other areas at the same time:

  • Saint Denis is a hotbed of criminal and cultist activities, ruled both publicly and privately by Angelo Bronte, a powerful sorcerer

  • To the north, in the bayou, are two mutually hostile groups - Vodou practitioners who worship Baron Samedi (whose avatar is a giant, undead, albino alligator), and the Night Folk, people who have been driven insane by Samedi's whisperings and prowl the swamps looking for sacrifices

  • Annesburg in still a mining town, but it the main source of Demon Ore and Hellstone in the area (the materials that give the setting its "weirdness"). These materials warp people and creatures, and summon demons and worse things from different planes across the multiverse, so there's a heavy Pinkerton presence in the area to try and keep order.

  • At the Wapiti Indian Reserve, Rains Fall and Eagle Flies are still at odds with each other. Rains Fall is a shaman (i.e., cleric) that worships the old gods and spirits of the land and wants to keep his people safe from the infernal influences that are being dug up in Annesburg. Eagle Flies has taken a more aggresive stance and entered into a pact with He Who Walks In Shadows, a malevolent spirit that seeks to re-enter the world (not that Eagle Flies knows). He Who Walks In Shadows allows Eagle Flies and his braves to transform into werewolves and werebears, and cast magic, at the cost of their souls at death (again, not that Eagle Flies knows). He Who Walks In Shadows is also worshipped by the Skinner Brothers, who sacrifice captives in return for mutations and eldritch boons. As the spirit's power grows, its influence is felt in places like Strawberry, where the streets are haunted by a man-eating Wendigo.

  • The treasure of the Braithwaites and Grays is real, and buried under the Rhodes Cemetary. The Braithwaites and Grays were once a single family, but two brothers had a falling out over their father's inheritance. The father, on his deathbed, put a curse on the treasure, which could only be lifted if the families merge together again. The father's spirit guards the treasure, and if any is taken without the curse being lifted, the dead will rise from the ground in the area, including the cemetary and the nearby Civil War battlefield. The LeMoyne Raiders know about the treasure but not it's location, so it's a 3-way tug-of-war for the fortune before the players arrive.

  • What I'm looking for is more ideas from you players who have explored the world as well. Pick a place on the map and tell me about it. What weird/horrific/fantastic thing happens if the players go there?

I'm also looking for Strangers to make a list for the players to run into while travelling. Stuff like attempted robberies, snakebitten folks, and fast-talking salesmen of bunk magical books are in there, but I'm also looking for other ideas, like Margaret's collection of animals being a Dire Wolf, a Ghoul, and a Chimera.

So let me know what you think of!
