Good Dakka to you all!

I got some good information the other day from you guys and need some more assistance. I was able to narrow down what I wanted to play: Imperial soup and Chaos soup. I need to find some examples of some decent soup builds so that I can start planning what I need to buy. The problem is I can’t decipher what’s a good build vs what’s dated, can anyone assist me with a couple of ideas? I appreciate your Dakka!!

Why don't you make a couple lists of what you like and what you think will work and then people can help you out with your choices from there. As far as sample lists, there are plenty on this forum itself and on places like frontline gaming and all the groups that post battle reports online.

Craftworlds Eldar: 8500
Dark Eldar: 1000
Harlequins: 1000
Raven Guard: 1500
Tyranids: 1500

For imperial astra militarum are good for cp which you can use on more powerful units like space marines. Now that you can only get back 1CP max per round I think it might not be as effective but it still works well.

Well, theorycrafting is fun, so here's an imperial soup list I threw together real fast that I think would be pretty darn good. You've got a Castellan, 2 Blood Angel smash captaiins, 3 units of scouts to hold objectives, Stracken + 2 Company Commanders, 3 Priests with Eviscerators, 70 Catachans (some with power swords), 3 Hellhounds, and 3 mortar HWS.

You've got some very CP hungry characters there (the smashcaptains and the Knight), so to feed them you'll have 20 CP base, minus 3 from extra relics / traits, so 17 total, with 1 regen per turn from the Guard.

So I understand that you are returning to the hobby, and I can say from the questions you are asking I'm not sure if soup is for you.

Notably, unless you are looking at winning Adepticon or NOVA, "whats good and whats dated" are very different questions. A good list is a good list, and unless you are willing to rebuild your army for every major tournament to update it for the meta... a good list from the summer is still a good list today. The big downside to Soup, as a goal for starting out is that it is expensive. You need a codex for each of the armies you soup in, and its also worth noting that soup has a natural tendancy to look disjointed on the table since you aren't tactically speaking taking units because they look good together, but rather you are gleaning the cream of the cream of the codexii and cherry picking elite units.

In terms of cost and investment, it is significantly cheaper to build an army you like. Say space marines or guard, and slowly branch out into other aligned armies. Soup is best for players who have large collections spanning multiple factions, it gives them the opportunity to mix and match. Its also good for tournament players, aiming to compete at high level competitive environments. But remember, their lists are incredibly refined and the good tourny players actually change up their lists at least annually and often more frequently to stay on top of the meta and new releases from GW.

Anyway. I guess back on topic. If you want to play soup well its pretty easy right now.

Imperial Guard Battalion
Castellan Knight
Blood Angel Captains

Done.
