Fairly self explanatory really, do you prefer to play silly games (EG exploding kittens, cards against humanity, bucket of doom) or do you prefer to play serious games (EG Warhammer 40k, bolt action, monopoly, chess)?

I realise that a lot will depend on the company and (for those old enough) level of intoxication, but as a general rule, do you prefer games which make you laugh at their absurdity for the entertainment or games which your reward is through careful tactics and competitiveness?

I have a few games I'm brainstorming and I'm curious if I am in a minority in which I prefer. I've definitely noticed an increase in "silly" games in recent years, but haven't been looking to see if there's been a similar increase in serious.

I also know that silly games tend to be lighter and easier to get non-gamer friends to play than serious games.

While I like the occasional serious game, the more lighthearted and fast paced games are often the ones I go for. They are just easier to get more people invested in and can produce a lot more laughs.

That said my favourite games are all serious ones (axis and allies, coup, etc) You can also have games that are serious on the surface but can become quite entertaining. I played a game of Secret Hitler the other day that, while technically a serious game, became hilarious by the end of it!

Both.

Depends on the game, the company, my mood, what else I've been playing. Both have their strong and weak points; both have their attractions and benefits.

I honestly can't say I prefer one over the other.

Also many times the game itself is just a platform and its player attitude that can make a huge difference in if its silly or sane .

I like it when silly stuff happens in 'serious' games. It's one of the reasons I like 40k, because it's both serious and silly.

The question is:

Is it seriously silly or so silly its serious?

I prefer a simple, serious game.

Something that is streamlined and lightweight for quick resolution and reasonable playtime, but with a broadly "serious" intent.

I will play the occasional silly game.

Silly games are great.

So are serious games.

I personally like silly games as sometimes you just need that giggle release. Especially if you have had a pretty gakky day.
