Howdy all,

Another day in Texas, another battle report! This time Jon (my excellent opponent from last game) wanted to rematch me, only this time, he revamped his list a ton and wanted to play ITC format; and he has an awesome gaming space at his home! Mission and Deployment
We rolled ITC Mission 6, which has 5 objectives placed in a Cross. We rolled the weird corners deployment as well (lot of 6's!). Post deployment the table looked like this:

For secondaries Death Guard took: Big Game Hunter, Old School, and Behind Enemy Lines. Eldar took: Big Game Hunter, Recond, and Old School.

The large eldar parking lot with the DG lined up across the way... epic. Jon won the roll off, I failed to seize, and off we went!

Eldar Turn 1

Spoiler:

Jon moves out! He moves his large parking lot a bit, mostly getting lines of fire on the Contemptors. He chooses not to disembark any of his guys, leaving them in their tin cans.

With no psychic powers this turn, Jon starts shooting my crap; he unloads everything he can into the Contemptors (I guess they looked scary) and destroys one, while knocking a second to just a single wound left. I believe he plinks a wound off a PBC as well. He has no assaults, hes pretty stagnant

(No picture, sorry!)

Eldar killed one vehicle, scoring one BGH point. He scores one for Old School as well, and holds one and killed one. Score is Eldar 4-DG 0.

Tactical insight: Jon did very well this turn, basically waxing two contemptors! Man... not good for their first outing :( That said, Jon made a mistake in taking recon; he is content to hang out on half the map and let me come to him. However, doing this he only secured on objective, leaving the board open to me.

DG Turn 1

Spoiler:

I start by moving all three PBC's 9' up the middle. My full contemptor moves up a bit, while the 1 wound one shuffles forward as well, leaving the chaos lord between them. The demon prince hops up behind the PBC's, while my Knight goes north towards the Fire Prism there. Both Armigers jocky for position, keeping max distance from his parking lot; this is to prevent them from getting hit by anything because the way he positioned only the Fire Prism on the left side had a clear line (and distance) to them.

Psychic power miasma goes on the prince.

Shooting! Altaiocs shennanigans do well, causing all my stubbers and mortars to miss. However, the combined firepower of Contemptors and Armigers work to kill the Serpent carrying his Reapers; this causes two to die in the crash (it exploded but he rerolled the 6). My Knight unloads on the left most prism, and charges in to finish it in CC.

DG score one Old School point, two BGH points. They killed one, held one. DG held 2 Objectives while Eldar held one. DG also killed more. Score is Eldar 4-DG 7.

Tactical Insights: Because this list plays vastly different from my Nurgling list, I wanted to keep distance on those flamer tanks and work through his Prisms this game. I don't know if it was the best play...

Eldar Turn 2

Spoiler:

Undeterred, Jon jumps into action, mobilizing the parking lot after disembarking all his characters and rangers. As you'll see in the pictures, they spread all over. His Reapers took cover in the ruiins in the back corner.

Psychic phase I believe Jon gets off everything on the reapers.

Shooting is equally devestating; first off, Jon kills both contemptors, and his Ranger blob is able to kill my Chaos lord! Next he is able to do a handful of wounds to the Knight, and his Warp Hunter does a whopping 15 wounds to my bottom PBC @_@ I save enough that its left with 3 wounds. (BTW he hit 6 times, wounded 5 times, 3 got through, and he rolled a 6, 6, 3.... yeash)

Assault he picks his nose, and charges the warp hunter into my 1 wound PBC but can;t finish him.

Eldar killed (a lot) and only held one (right side). He scored 2 more Big Game Hunter points as well. Score is Eldar 8 - DG 7.

Tactical Insight: I figured I was going to lose the contemptors, but man... that flamer tank HURT! This was a really bad turn for me, and things were looking pretty grim. I'm doubting my choice to go after the Prisms...

DG Turn 2

Spoiler:

I start by moving the three PBCs to surround his middle Warp Hunter and falling back with the damaged one; this things gonna die! Both armigers jocky for position again, and I use the cover to my advantage, moving my knight so the buildings keep the reapers from seeing me.

Psychic phase Miasma goes on the prince... woo.

Shooting my three PBC's are able to get the Warp Hutnter in the middle to 1 wound!!!! Jon made a ton of saves, which really sucked... this is gonna hurt. Tht Knight is unable to finish the Warp Hunter with his stubber and smaller shots, but he shoots then charges his middle Fire Prism killing it. My Armigers put out a TON of hits (one got 12 shots, the other 8), but know what? They all go into his other Warp Hunter, and I'll be damned, john only fails two saves leaving it at 6.

There are no assaults.

Death guard killed one, held two. They scored one more point for BGH. They also score a point for behind enemy lines. Eldar killed more, while Death Guard hold more. Score is Eldar 9 - DG 13.

Tactical Insight: That Warp Hunter not dying is terrible... at this point it feels like I'm a goner. My only saving grace is that Jon has been so focused on killing stuff he hasn't been outscoring me; as well, my Knight and Armigers are in a position they are essentially able to run around doing what they want. Lets hope my PBC's live this turn....

Eldar Turn 3

Spoiler:

Jon gleefully moves both his Warp Hunters into position to fry some PBC's! Meanwhile his Reapers sit happy in their little ruin, and both his remaining Wave Serpents begin to move around setting up for Recon. His rangers more or less stay stationary; a few see my knight and they're happy to hold their objective.

Psychic phase the Reapers get the whole gammut of spells.

Now shooting! (this games all about shooting isn't it?) First his injured Warp Hunter shoots a second unwounded PBC and rolls ANOTHER 15 wounds!!!! GAHHHHHH... it lives with 3 wounds. However, Jons having none of that, and combined firepower from everything is able to kill ALL THREE PBC's IN A SINGLE TURN! He does a couple wounds to my knight as well. I auto-explode one PBC, it does a wound to my demon prince but (most importantly) kills the damaged Warp Hunter.

Eldar killed (three), Held one. he maxed out BGH and scored a recon point. Score is Eldar 13 - DG 13

Tactical Insight: Well that lead was short lived... as I said, that Warp Hunter living was bad... really bad. And Jons damage rolls are insane today! All I have left is four models; what can I do??

DG Turn 3

Spoiler:

After a lot of thought, I think if I keep my Knight from being seen by those Reapers I may stand a chance. I have two unwounded Armigers, my Warlord (with 7 wounds left), and my Knight was at 16 or 15 wounds left. I start by moving the knight slightly; enough that I was in range of the Prism, but Jons reapers still couldn't see me. The Armigers shuffled again, while my Prince hide behind the grey brick of terrain.

Psychic phase I get off Miasma on the prince.

Shooting is pretty eventful; I knock his remaining Fire Prism to 2 wounds left, as well as kill the second Warp Hunter. Thank goodness! If it lived I would totally be done for.

I do not have any assaults.

Death guard held two to Eldars one, killed one, and maxed out BGH. They also scored a second Behind Enemy Lines. Eldar killed more, while DG held more. Score is Eldar 14 - DG 18.

Tactical Insight: So I've killed the largest threats, and crippled his last prism to essentially being useless. This really leaves just his reapers; but he has 8 of them with full buffs still.... If I can stay ahead of Jon in points, my Armigers can just hide and I can probably ride out a victory!

Eldar Turn 4

Spoiler:

Jons remaining serpents scatter around; his brightlance serpent taking aim at my prince, while his other one starts moving to get recon and contest my points. However, he is forced to move the reapers to see my Knight; but they see only a smidgeon of him which gives me cover (extremely important)

Psychic all the applicable spells go off.

Shooting his Bright Lance serpent is able to hit and wound my Demon prince once, rolling another 6 for wounds! Papa Nurgle smiles on me, and this leaves my Demon prince with 5 wounds left. He plugs away at my Knight, bringing him to 11 wounds thanks mostly to cover giving me 4+. He has no assaults.

Eldar held two, and could not secure any kills this turn. He scored his second recon point. Eldar 16 - DG 18.

Tactical Insight: This was a huge turn for me, him only being able to nick my knight was huge. At this point I had two CP remaining, while Jon had none; this was key because it gave me options on what I could do this turn. His Reapers are now out of their little fort, so time to made some noise....

DG Turn 4

Spoiler:

Movement is simple; my Armigers draw a bead on his wave serpents, while my Knight moves toward the middle. My DP jumps over the terrain, setting up a charge on the Reapers.

Psychic phase I fail to get off miasma.

Shooting, though, goes well; I knock his bottom serpent to 7 wounds, but more importantly I shoot (then charge and kill) his Bright lance serpent, leaving my Knight as king in the middle.

In assault, my Demon Prince makes his charge, while the Reapers overwatch hits and wounds 3 times! I make one save, and then enough FNP saves that the Demon Prince is left at two... hot damn! The Prince eats a bunch of reapers, leaving the squad with only a few left. Other great thing is that those Witch Blades that wound on 2's make for awesome Plate bounces... I do 2 mortals to his Farseer and one Warlock.

(no pictures)

Death Guard held two, killed one. They held more and killed more. Score is Eldar 16 - DG 22

Eldar Turn 5

Spoiler:

Jon looks at the board and says that he only sees one way to win this. He falls back with the Reapers and the rangers near the Demon Prince. He moves his bottom serpent to control an objective and help with the prince. He starts with some smites, and I'm able to save enough to leave the demon prince at 1 wound. He then unloads all the rangers, and everything else in the army... but the Prince still stands when the smoke clears. With that, Jon calls it; but we do talk out the remaining turns to get a final score.

Jon held one this turn, Eldar 17- DG 22

DG Turn 5

Spoiler:

I talk out that my Demon Prince would charge his Farseer/Warlock, the prince kills both and would consolidate into his reapers. I would also have gotten his remaining serpent killed.

Death guard killed more and held more, killed the warlord. Score is Eldar 17, DG 28

Eldar Turn 6

Spoiler:

Jon would run some stuff and barely make the bottom objective/linebreaker. He shoots and kills my demon prince.

Jon maxes Old School, killed one and held two. Eldar 22, DG 28

DG Turn 6

Spoiler:

I move my knight into his deployment zone. I kill his remaining prism.

DG held one, killed one, maxed old school, maxed behind enemy lines, while Eldar held more. Eldar 23, DG 33

Results and Post Game

Spoiler:

Final score is: Eldar 23, DG 33
Eldar Maxed Big Game Hunter and Old School, scored 2 Recon. Death guard maxed Big Game Hunter, Old School, and Behind Enemy Lines.

This game was a doozy! I loved the terrain that Jon had at his house, I like the elements that made the board dynamic (those smoke clouds glowed!). This was a very tight game, and I was surprised I was able to pull ahead in the end; really this game was all about movement and positioning. Had I let those reapers get a good position earlier, I would have probably lost badly. Jons damage rolls were on point, and my Armigers were getting tons of shots but failing to wound (for example, hit 11 times, wounded twice on a Serpent). Can't always blame dice though.

Jon played an extremely solid game, and this one really tested me and my list. I'll have to test Contemptors more before I know if they're really for me, but I believe had I gotten first, I would have been able to make a huge dent in those fliers. Time will tell!

Thanks for reading!

Ah, swapping the Lord for a Poxbringer and putting the demon prince in the Contemptor detachment? Thats actually a pretty good idea. I did miss Fleshy Abundance!

I also like my dual battle cannon knight better than my dual avenger cannon. Longer Range, higher strength. I have been using twin battle cannons w/either the indirect fire missiles or the anti armor. The one with the anti armor can but down enemy vehicles and knights. Those coupled with the butcher cannons and the mortars ends up with a lot of str 8 shooting.

Right, but it all boils down to points. Going that route would mean I would have to cut something; most likely an HQ, which would give me only 7 CP to play with. 8 CP felt... good. Also, I tend to play aggressivelty with my knights; I'm not against charging in and stomping on stuff when I can. In this game that aggression probably saved my ass, the Knight stomped two Fire Prisms and one Wave Serpent to death lol.

Great tactical feedback!

Haha thanks! It was a load of fun, can't say I have played a mostly vehicle game this edition. Felt very much like 5th... loads of transports on one side, loads of big bots on the other.

I'm going to keept testing the Contemptor squad, I think next time I'll try Alpha Legion to bolster their survivability a bit.
