I have finished most of the Horus heresy series, and thinking back, I wish I knew then what I know now in what order to read it. I personally read it in release order and I find it pretty sloppy and all over the place. While it is generally in chronological order, I didn't like how character arcs are interrupted with other stories and how long it takes for the story to return to said characters, because my memory is so bad. So with my proposed reading order, I decided to focus on characters and events. Also I tried to make the order make sense chronologically, for example the perpetuals' arch. In the end, this proposed reading order is by no means perfect and still probably is an unfinished mess and has much to improve and add, so don't be afraid to make suggestions. Enjoy!

What is the significance of the highlighted text? Are those what you found to be essential to the core narrative?

I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you

yes, you can interpreted it that way. those that are highlighted are the main books, while the unhighlighted ones are novella and short stories

I probably wouldn't read it in the order shown in that list, but as i've largely ignored the short stories (which tend to be utter garbage imo) its hard to put my own list out there, plus, there are way to many books in the series and I lost interest as the quality fell off a cliff in the 30's.

However, I noticed that Galaxy in Flames and Flight of the Eisenstein were very far apart in this list. Now certainly the beginning of Eisenstein takes place immediately at the end of Galaxy of Flames, but where in the timeline does the book end?

I kinda wish I had time to do a reading list like this, establish a proper timeline and indeed leave out books that, imo, were unecessary, didnt really advance the plot, or were written by gav thorpe.
