Hi all,

Just thought I would share my battle reports from the two samurai games my club plays. Test of honour and Ronin by Osprey.

Looked like a good time.

I am surprised your archer survived! He was outgunned four to one!

Very nice! I liked the commentary!
How long did the game last?
Do you like Test of Honor or Ronin better?
Are all the minis from ToH?
Great Report.

Looks like a fun game. Did you run the ninja as Koryu? It appears that way, but just checking. I've tended to adapt the ninja profile from the assassination scenario, and this might be a better approach.

To Doktor_g

The ashigaru/samurai are the former WGF figures, now owned by Warlord and re-branded as Test of Honor.

While I'm not sure how long this game lasted, Ronin usually runs anywhere from 1-2.5 hours depending on the scenario, number of people playing, etc. It plays pretty quick, and once you learn all of the +/- on stats, you can chug right along.

On time, on target, or the next one's free

Mmm yes well archery at long range at an armoured target isn't that effective. The damage was slowly building up on him though. Archery on the unarmoured can be quite dangerous though.

Yeah, the Ninja ran as Koryu.. so why not a ninja sword school? haha...

Some of those minatures are WGF/Warlord/Test of honour. Others are perry and steel fist. My darth vader for example is a steel fist minature.

The game lasted maybe 2.5 hours? There were 4 of us and we were going pretty slowly. We could had sped it up with simultaneous combats.. oh well next time

I like both games. Ronin has more in-depth rules and I like how you have Samurai vs bandits vs ikko ikki and so on. In test of honour you just mix and match and if you want you can have a horrible team of bandits, ronin, ikko, samurai etc.. its a bit silly. Of course you don't have to play like that but you can. Test of honour has a more bouncy combat system, which I prefer as you don't get bogged down in combat unlike in ronin where once you have done your initial move, thats it.. its kill or be killed.

You can leave combat in Ronin, you just don't want to typically (the enemy gets a free, basic, attack). Unless, of course, you are ninja with the agility perk.

It is the withdraw rule on page 10

Yup, I knows this but it has a drawback of having a free hit against you. Anyways in the games I have played of Ronin I haven't seen anybody leave combat until everybody is dead.

About withdraw, let's say the fighter left has been already activated during the current turn.
Does he still get a free action?

Thanks

Here is what the rulebook says:

WITHDRAW
A model that is in base-to-base contact with one or more enemy models may move up to 2” out of
contact. The enemy model (or models) has three options in this situation:
1. The enemy model(s) may choose to not move and make a single attack against the departing
model. This happens just like a normal attack, but without any opportunities for Enhancing.
Additionally, the attacking model gets an additional +1 to its Attack Roll.
2. Do nothing.
3. Move back into base-to-base contact as that model’s activation.

OK so from this I understand it that the enemy model cannot make a free attack if he has already activated.

To get all technical, a reading could be that the only option listed that requires activation is moving back into combat.

However, I prefer your interpretation.

We assume an already activated model can't get a free action
Thank you guys

I dislike that option as you could just walk out of combat, there is never an incentive to move first under that scenario. That feels wrong for a cinematic feudal Japanese game.

I would agree you cannot perform the follow up move, but I do believe you should read it that you can get a free attack if you so choose.

As you are going to fight combat if they stay during the combat round, this also makes the most sense. It isn't really a free attack at that point when seen from that perspective.

On time, on target, or the next one's free
