I have played a few games but haven't gotten too far into aos. I liked the aesthetics of ogors and have some gut busters and some beastclaw but I'm looking for something different or a little more competative.

My local store tends to be full of people that play tournament lists (for 40k or aos) and while I don't mind playing against them having a fighting chance would be nice.

I am thinking either death, demons of some sort, or stormcast. I'm really open to anything.

Stormcast, Daughters of Khaine, Legions of Nagash.

That is the current power triad right now if you want to powergame.

In no particular order; Seraphon (summon-based builds), Stormcast (mainly sacrosanct units, but some niche builds otherwise), Legions of Nagash (a ton of different options), Daughters of Khaine (probably the top army atm), Idoneth (eel spam), Nurgle (blightking/daemon split) and I'm sure a couple other armies I'm forgetting plus a handful of very specific builds from others.

I would sort-of put Nighthaunt in as well, but the best way to run Nighthaunt is using LoN allegiance. Even limited only to the subset of 'haunt that can go into LoN it is still stronger because the allegiance is insane.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Seraphon look cool and I do like the idea of a summonable army. But that also sounds rather hard on the wallet.

The options that stormcast have seem nice, I like the ballista.

LoN: they do seem pretty awesome and easy to paint.

Nurgle: I do like the models and the idea behind them.

I am leaning more towards seraphon and LoN. But with the bundles currently available getting some nighthaunt and stormcast wouldn't be too bad.

The two guys outside the store I play with often play Slaves of Darkness and Khorne. Pretty sure the khorne player is looking to run council of blood.

What would be a good match for those?

If you run nighthaunt based LoN or sacrosanct stormcast you may need to go easy on them.

Slaves to Darkness and Khorne are both middling to weak. If you are running a true competitive list then you will have easy games against them. You will likely need to pair your list down in order to make the game enjoyable for them.

Do realize that summoning mechanics may change next summer with the new GHB, as they did in last GHB.

I have no problem not running a competative list against them. I just want to be able to actually stand a chance in the local games outside my house.

Everyone says Seraphon are OP because of their summoning, and on paper this seems really good.BUT they are not sweeping tournaments, as they are quickly overpowered before they can really start summoning.

Stormcast Eternals (will teleport into or character snipe your slann and astrolith bearer quickly).

Daughters of Khaine (very fast, and/or deep striking units). If their alpha strike goes well they've won.

Legion of Nagash will still have more models than you that are also much more resilient and will just grind you out on objectives regardless of your summons.

Even Beasts of Chaos and the new Skaven will be all over you by turn 2 at the least threatening your summoners.

Go Slaanesh; you can have the fastest army on the board and choose what combats take place and when. Want a 22” moving KoS who can fly? Yup, that exists. That’s just moving; you can still charge after that. Sorry, can actually make it 24” move. Bring chronomatic cogs and the flame-cape (HA!) on him, run a bunch of seekers (with the seeker discipline for your army), and hit any target you want on the first turn. Don’t forget you can add a bunch of -1 to hit modifiers, screw with casters, and summon spam when you injure/wipe out multi-wound models. Idoneth? Daughters? They have set annoyances that you can completely neuter with this level of speed. Embrace depravity!!

Oh; and if you use a battalion, like the Wrath and Rapture one, use your second artifact to snag a Fallacious Gift as well; make your opponent’s best weapon snack on its wielder.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
