Idon't like troops. (Or tanks really)
I like Bikes and walkers. Calvary and beasts are Awesomesauce. Deamons and Carnifexs are cool. Heavy weapons platforms are alright, even terminators are cool.
But I don't like troops. For this discussion troops are anything thats pretty cheep, slow, not too tough and not really scary in either shooting or melee.
So how do I avoid them? Is there anyone that can take something like bikes or warwalkers as a troop choice?
I know I don't have to take a batalion detachment but that is the best way to get Command points, and i like command points, ad you might guess I'm a toys before boys kind of guy.

Certain armies tend to have a more tanky option in their troop slot. Off the top of my head, you have Tyranid Warriors and Kataphron battle servitors from Admech, for example...

Orks have Nobz, Tyranids have Warriors, Necrons have Immortals, Grey Knights, Custodes, Thousand Sons and Death Guard's marine troops are all beefy as heck.
There is only a few codexes off the top of my head that have NO 'heavy' troop choices, like Tau, Daemons, and Guard. But otherwise, it's fairly easy to start an army with very few troops, and a lot of CP.

There are also builds that dodge Troops entirely; it's not an optimal choice since you don't get as many CP as you might want, but the Custodes book gets bigger-than-Terminators models in Troops and can be run centered around jetbike spam, in part because the whole detachment gets ObSec rather than just the Troops.

The price you pay for having all special equipment is not having command points, and having poor objective scoring.
There's few ways around it, and there's shouldn't be a way around it.
Your only real option, I think is playing Imperial Knights.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

You want Deathwatch then - it's an entire army built on a special, extremely customizable, elite unit taking place as your troops.
Can even add bikes as a troop choice with big squads and the combat squad rule. Run 5 vets in any combination and add bikes and jump pack models to combat squad off them.
Then lean on big Dreadnoughts for your heavier weapons. No need for tanks and your troops are basically every other marine army's elite choices.
Alternatively Custodes are an ultra elite army where their troops are expensive but dangerous.
Or just run a full Knights list with whatever bike allies you want.

Most armies can get 3 troops as 3x5 models. It's not a big hardship even if you don't like troops.

Minimum cultist or scouts could be payment for command points.
You can also use allies for command points. If you like terminators you can take GK battalion with 3*terminator units and dreadknights with SM or DA outrider detachments.Terminators are not point efficient so cultist are better point sacrifice.

Just run Imperial Knights. All walkers. No Troops. You can even ally in an Ad Mech Outrider detachment with three Dragoons and a Techpriest Enginseer to fix up any of your robots. And Dragoons are best of both worlds, since they are Walkers AND Cavalry.

Troops are needed, I run nearly 100 firewarriors and they do fine.

Adeptus Mechanicus has the kataphron units. Off the top of my head they have 3 wounds at toughness 5. They even got a lot cheaper. Perhaps not cheap enough to be competitive but you got to make sacrifices with those demands.

Well, you absolutely can. But as others say, it reduces your CP potential.
Also, good luck winning objective based games. Few bods on the table, and unlikely to benefit from Objective Secured yourself.
I'm not at all, even remotely, convinced that the trade off is worth it, as I think you'll find your firepower insufficient to reduce down his troops numbers to a point where you can actually hold any objectives. And that's a major 'dude, you're not going to win any games' drawback.

Use Outrider, Spearhead, Vanguard and Supreme Command detachments. No troops needed.
But if you ask me, playing with no troops is kinda lame. Troop choices are supposed to be the most numerous on the battlefield.

If you don't like soldiers or tanks but you do like daemons, have you considered playing daemons? They include cavalry and beasts.
Bikes, terminators and walker/platforms can be allies in through csm.

Try an ork dread mob with lots of walkers and tons of artillery CPs aren't needed since they're mostly gretchins units and can't use stratagems. Just 2 CPs for deep striking stuff and eventually other 2 for letting the killed melee HQ (if you have one) fight another time before leaving the table. Going with three detachments (spearheads) with no troops will give you 6 CPs. If you also like bikes you can add an outrider with bikes and or the shiny new buggies as they're going to match very well with a dread mob, they'll provide redundancy of targets.
Don't expect to compete at tournaments though, highly competitive gaming is about CPs, and tons of cheap wounds that are impossible to remove if you also want to delete quiclky the scary armored stuff.

You could play an Eldar Wraithlist I suppose? I personally consider them walkers even if they technically aren't, and just 15 rangers shouldn't be too bad for you. Park em somewhere backfield and potshot away.

Nobz are elite. You are going to be soooo screwed without at least 6 troop choices.

cant have a battalion without the basic 1W troops.
so your only option is lots of elites and minimal CP aka armys that are strictly casual/fluffy, or find a different game completely.

I dunno, play an army where the troops are beastly?
Deathwatch, Harlequins, you could go admech for Kataphrons, Tyranids for Genestealers...There are a ton of armies where the troops are killariffic.

Though i am a huge proponent that they need to bring back HQs that modify a units slot allocations; i.e. biker troops, terminator troops.
