Hey folks, first time poster here. Have played 40k since Rogue Trader (granted, I was a young'un then), but stopped for a while. My eldest two have just gotten old enough to want to play, so we've started with Kill Team. I got stuck with Eldar as I didn't want to duplicate the kids' armies. Because of that, I already have some DAs and Guardians, as well as an old box of warlocks / farseers (metal) that I bought years ago because I liked the models. Looking to put together a decent list for the local gaming store / local tournaments, but nothing meta or super competitive. I like the idea of sticking with a pure craftworld army for fun, and certainly don't want to cheese my kids. Nonetheless, I'm new with Eldar and could use some tips. This was the first list I put together, please be kind.

For whatever reason, I like the idea of an elite army (aspect warriors, vehicles, etc). The minis are great, and I kind of like the idea that fewer more elite forces fit the Eldar better than masses of Guardian Defenders (though that didn't stop me from taking one unit I'll plan on warping into the fight!). At the same time, I don't want to be limited by a crappy army that I can't have a decent chance with in a relaxed environment.

I took the banshees (who will be in the WS) because they are cool, and I figured the DRs would be shooty enough vis a vis vehicles / monsters. Am I wrong? Should I sub them for Fire Dragons? The DAs I have anyway, so I figured I'd throw them in. Autarch will ride with one of the Shining Speer units. I figured the warlock could help protect the DRs, and the Farseer use his guide / doom to cause much mischief. Not sure how to play that, though.Guide would be great with the DRs, but that means holding him back, and he wouldn't be able to do much with doom. Thoughts?

Cheers!

Well, the flow of battle is decisive in a CW army.
My Autarch rides a jetbike and has also a reaper launcher. As a warlord, I give him the mark of the uncomp. hunter. She could buff the DRs if necessary.
I'd put the lumbering Farseer on a jetbike too.
I'd mount the DRs in the Serpent if the enemy gets first turn.
The Banshees need a ride too. They can be buffed by quickening.
The rest looks pretty straightforward.
Its more a semi-competitive list.

Thanks for the response. Is it worth taking a second Wave Serpent to provide a safe home for the DRs for one half turn? Do I then turn it around to just be a dedicated combat vehicle? I had originally planned for that original Serpent to be the ride for the Banshees, and for the DRs to just stay on foot.

I'd have to drop one of the Hemlocks to fit it in.

I'll update the Farseer to have a Skyrunner for sure. That is a good idea, mobility never hurts, and the toughness is bonus.

semi-competitive is what I'm looking for. I want something I can play, but not a competitive tournament list. I'm not good enough a player anyway to want to play with the big dogs.

Cheers,

Well, a Serpent is always worth to be taken. The best transport in the game.

You dont need to turn it around. The new vehicle rules are simplistic - facing doesnt matter.

Your list looks fantastic for a first try! I would just play with it and decide what you like and what you don't. I think you might find that Quicken on your warlock will help you more than conceal, but that's also dependent on game type and opponent. Just remember to use all your best stratagems like phantasm, webway strike, serpent shield overload, and Seer Council

Does this mean I don't need vectored engines? I can save 20 points if I drop it off two wave serpents (I dropped a Hemlock to get a second Serpent).

Thanks! I've been reading the competitive lists I could find and toning them down to make them crappier - as well as pure craftworld. Some day, when I get enough time / experience / models I may get more competitive. Right now I'm just trying to put together a half decent army I have a chance to win with at the local gaming store. And against my kids who are probably going to be better than me at this.

I was torn between Quicken and Conceal. But I reckoned that if I put my warlock with the guardians, they might live longer with conceal after they use the webways to deep strike. Maybe get an extra round of shooting before they route and run like... space elves.

Of course, Quicken might allow me to adjust positioning better in case the deep strike goes awry or I need to improvise, adapt and overcome. I'm sure I'll try both and test. But having played astartes in the past, and dwarves in WFB (back in the day), I get real nervous around squishy units that belong to me.

Cheers and thanks!

Serpents dont need any upgrades.
Just move (not advance) them and shoot all their weapons.
Dont forget the Serpent shield giving D3 mortal wounds (to the next visible enemy unit).

Thanks for the response. I just freed up 20 points.

As for the my one 20 person guardian squad, do shuriken cannons make sense for a squad deep striking? Or should I switch to some other heavy weapon platform?

If you have the pts, take a shuriken-cannon platform or two.
Otherwise, don't bother.

Well, I'd let the Warlock join the Banshees and cast quicken on them.
The Guardians should better deep strike. Adding the Warlock would cost more CPs and is absolutely not necessary.

I'd consider underslung shuriken cannons for the Serpents.

I find twin shuriken cannons better than bright lances. They're cheaper and are better on the move. Even if you just use this for the bamshee transport. That will free a few points. You can put your warlock on a jetbike to keep pace with the farseer.

There are better choices than Banshees but I love them.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking of putting the warlock in with the banshees (I love them too, and I want something choppy besides the spears) - so movement is less of an issue due to their limo service (aka Wave Serpent). The shuriken cannons are great, especially with movement, but I'm nervous about not having enough anti-armour - as I'm taking banshees instead of fire dragons. I thought the bright lances might help address that (possibly just perceived) weakness.

Well, at the end of the day, I'd give your Serpents three shuriken cannons each and take a Biel-Tan force as it allows to reroll 1s to hit.
Moreover, I'd replace the Banshees and the Warlocks with 2x 5 Fire Dragons as they are very reliable tank killers.

Again, thanks for the feedback. I don't disagree that the Fire Dragons would be more effective - my first list had them until I realized Eldar without blades was just wrong I may switch to Fire Dragons instead.

From a math-hammer perspective, does the +1 to hit do better than the Ailatoc -1 to hit bonus? I do have a fair amount of guardians / DAs so it could be effective.

Well, my Eldar army is of Biel-Tan type.
My Serpents / units move gradually forward going for the throat of the enemy.
Alaitoc is more for ''fire and fade'' style of armies.

I would suggest taking 5 Fire dragons and 5 Dire avengers per Serpent and keep the Serpents bare bones. They are fast enough and the most survivable transport.

Love the fliers for CW, and Alaitoc gives them -2 to hit.

You want your HQ's mobile, so both skyrunner versions are good. Not sure what you want to do with the Warlock, other than being a buffer for the spears first turn?

Banshees - eh? That's hard mode as they and Spiders just don't have a place. Giving the Farseer the banshee mask fulfills the same purpose and with the Phoenix Gem makes her a super threat.

Good players are going after your Reapers and you may get 1/2 turns of shooting with them. Fire Dragons in Serpents is a standard staple since forever and will kill what you need dead.

I started off Alaitoc this edition as well, but am starting to move back towards my Biel-Tan roots.

Ok, so I followed your advice and here is the updated list. Dropped the Banshees (boo!) and the Warlock who was to party with them, and added two squads of Fire Dragons (yay!), as well as updating the Serpents to bare bones. To make the points fit, though, I dropped the Skyrunner Farseer to a Witchblade instead of a singing spear. I'll run 5 x DAs and 5x FDs in each Serpent. How is this list looking now?

I like it!

Get some games in and see how it plays out.

I think you will find the Serpent Shield to be a thing of beauty

Maybe you will find the Reapers to be overkill and just grab another Serpent/DA/FD combo

Okay, not quite a necro (I hope), but was playing around (as I'm slowly but steadily putting together my army) and wanted to get some advice on throwing in a troop of harlequins (because they are freaking cool! - and I built a harlequin kill-team so I have the models). Please let me know if this is viable or if I'm compromising the former synergy. My new thought process is to load the dark reapers into one of the wave serpents for 1st turn survival, and load the fire dragons and harlequins in the second (I assume I can do that?). When the fire dragons come out to pop some poor unsuspecting hard target, the harlequins can run interference in their special kill clown way and engage the largest threat to the fire dragons. Oh, and I had 7 points to burn so I gave my autarch a fusion pistol. Here's the list:
