Ok so, another of my help me build an army I am a noob thread.

I've build up some Grey Knights (probably 2500 points now) and Tyranids which are bang on 2k.

I am going to do Chaos next. Firstoff I am not focusing on the army being that competative, I much prefer to include models I like the look of, this takes priority, then following that, what I consider a balanced army (a good mix of various units) and then being good is say my 3rd pirority.

I am thinking about doing a soup with Daemons. I have wrote up a very first draft army list, I will add some rationale to the choices so far:

Chaos Daemons:

I like the princes, alot, the whole khorne thing, the soul grinder, IMO, one of the best looking things GW ever created, I appreciate they are not exaclty that great.

Renegate/dark raiders or whatever they are called:

I thought about making a 100% CC only detachment, with this legion, they can charge after advancing

The black legion detachment:

Now here is where I am struggling a bit, I love cultists, and they are a cheap troops choice, plus I know my army is lacking in CP, so ideally want to make up a batallion detachment...but.... I can see my army is lacking completely in and form of long range firepower, and I know I dont have many points left. I could bin off the chaos space marines for something else, but any suggestions to get a bit more dakka?

Rough army list:

As long as you're just looking to play casual, have fun and enjoy the aesthetic, Chaos is fine. They're pretty terrible right now in any real competitive sense though.

This is a list I ran with Daemons, it works well, but more models than I like moving around, especially in a tournament setting, but it had a lot of synergy, the Obliterators were especially effective despite the traditional wisdom that they should be Slaanesh for EC:

This is a list I run for fun with my friends, it actually performs surprisingly well but has obvious limitations, but it's low model count and you'll probably have a few moments of glory regardless of winning or losing:

Actually Obliterators are not a bad shout, I could dump the chaos space marine squad, replace them with a 3rd squad of cultists, than add 3 obliterators, and have a few more points left over, to maybe add a couple more to each squad of berzerkers.

Obliterators are your best. Give them the mark of slaanesh for double tap goodness. Though you may want to take two. Definitely plus up those Berzerkers and give the champions power weapons. Unless you’re rocking terminator or a jump pack your lord should be under 100 and probably under 90.

Unless you’re super in love with the models, don’t take warp talons. They’re extremely underwhelming and don’t do much as a unit. A unit of bikes with the new bolter rule can be down right viscious.

2nd bikes over warp talons. You can take three bikes with melta for less than the warp talons, lots of bolter shots for anti infantry and then the three melta shots should cripple something worthwhile unless you're super unfortunate.

I'd go Plasma bikers instead. Those plasma shots can still dent tanks, while also equally being good against infantry. Also, a marginal 9 points cheaper for 3.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, funnily enough the warp talons were one of the few things I wasnt 100% sure about, but I dont like bikes (sorry!! I know they are good) so I could take a 3rd squad of raptors, plus the added metla gun might come in handy for anti-tank.

If I take those, then 3 obliterators, this leaves me with 76 points approximately, as the above post by evil_kiwi, my chaos lord might be a bit cheaper, I have not finalised what wargear yet.

So might end up around 90 points spare give or take.

Probably use those points to add extra berzerkers and as you guys say, put the power weapons on the champions.

Hah - just checked in the box of berzerkers and they only give you enough chainswords/chainaxes to equip 6 guys like that....

I have a lot of Raptors. I put them in a list every once in awhile, usually when I'm initially kicking around ideas. They've never actually made it to a final list in 8th and have never seen the table. Hopefully your experience is better.

Warp Talons seem good, but not so much that I've been inclined to actually buy a squad of them.

Bikers just don't stack up well against other Chaos units. If they could take Chainaxes, maybe, but as a special weapons platforms they might not be bad, assuming you can provide something more interesting to shoot to your opponent.

Invest in some Daemons, I go Khorne/Tzeentch, mostly as a personal preference, but Nurgle daemons are very strong also. Slaanesh daemons are in this weird place that in my opinion is not good, they're not as good in hand to hand as Khorne, they're not as durable as Nurgle, and they don't have guns like Tzeentch.

Daemon Princes will serve you well, Chaos armies have kind of always been carried on the backs of their characters.

Anyone know if the choas lord from GW is metal/resin (I am guessing not plastic) I mean the older style one as per the link:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/CSM-Lord-2

Fairly certain he is metal

My current army list had two small squads of raptors. One with plasma the other with melta. I don't think I am going to keep them in the list and replaced them with a forge fiend. My list already has two squads of terminators I plan to deep strike. It also has a land raider and two rhinos so I don't think I would need the raptors speed nearly as much.

Ultimately, I went with the forge fiend simply because the model looked cooler but I also think it would do more than 10 raptors. I might be better off bringing a mauler fiend, but I hadn't fielded forge fiend before so I wanted to try it out. Plus the magnets I installed don't hold the mauler fiend options in place nearly as well as the forge fiend.
