I wanted to watch the LVO while working today but it seems they aren't streaming, or at least not yet. I figured I would start a thread where people can not only discuss the streams/games but post links/times to watch these as I believe they are switching coverage between WHTV and FLG streams.

The FLG channel seems to have up AOS games and the commentators just mentioned that the 40k side on warhammerTV is having technical issues but hopefully is up shortly Automatically Appended Next Post: Just as an update looks like WarhammerTV is up and streaming on twitch.com with and imperium vs Imperium battle ATM

Is it just me or does streaming 40k not work as a concept? We've got commentators saying things like "the Strike Squads here and here" without actually being able to see where they're pointing. We've also got them desperately trying to fill time (and doing a surprisingly OK job of it) because when you get right down to it, watching a game of 40k in real time from a bad angle is an exercise in boredom and frustration. Anything that's not a Knight is almost impossible to distinguish on the screen and so much of what happens in 40k requires verbal communication that this remote viewing feels like it's leaving out about 80% of the game.

you can say that about any sport, and the commentators pull it off.

Not really. Football, tennis, basketball...many, many sports in fact are usually interesting to watch even without commentary. Stuff actually happens fairly frequently, for a start. The cameras can usually capture what's happening in useful fashion too.

Yeah but a lot of sports are say what you see and/or they are designed with an audience in mind.
If a footballer is trying to run down a wing - its obvious. If someone is trying to 6 pool, or fast mid its obvious. If someone just throws some dice with their back to you... its not.
I love youtube battle reports. I think plenty of channels do a really good job of it.
I do not like listening to two people mumbling to each other while they rolling dice and occasionally picking up models, all viewed through a luxurious GW patented potato camera stuck three meters over the table like some futurist skylight.

Well I play GK so what GK player units did was obvious to me, and what knights do is something everyone does. Now I understand that with GK being part of the set up, this could be a bit like watching american football for the first time though.

it's not really about the units involved. I understand how GK work, how AdMech work, how Knights work. It's just that the fundamental flow of a game of 40k makes it singularly unsuited to being a spectator event. There's far too much downtime where very little happens and a huge amount of the game is bound up in dice rolls (which we can't see), stratagem use (where it's often unclear which stratagem, if any, has been used) and moving for LoS or charges (which are difficult to accurately get a feel for on stream).
I think the commentators did a great job of trying to cover for these problems but ultimately there's only so much they can do with the limitations of the set-up they have.

I don't know, I always find that when am watching others play that there is not enough time for me to count all probabilities for hits and wounds. Not saying that am very fast at counting in the first place, but I can watch people play for 5-6 hour no stop. But maybe I am special, I can over focus on stuff.

Touch screen was down. They'll have it up later.

They typically have a football style screen where announcers can draw on it and point out things to the audience but they are having some technical issues Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yup obviously a nerf is needed

I shouldn't be laughing at the outcome of the game, but couldn't help with how my expectations were toppled.

Some competitions are just not good spectator sports. 40k is one of them imo. 40k is good for HIGHLIGHTS, but watching a guy spend 30 minutes completing the movement phase for his 200 boyz is not intellectually stimulating in the least.
That said I've always advocated for streaming these games. Its good for the community.

Its the sort of stream I have on while painting/gluing models or in the background while I do something else.
Listen to commentators and check in every one in a while to see how things go.
To just sit and stare at the screen for 2.5 hours is indeed garbage, in my opinion.

I think they do an exceptional job keeping it engaging. Tournaments move fast anyway. You're unlikely to see 200 boyz at LVO anyway.

To each, their own but I love this stream its perfect background while working or hobbying. It also has about 3300 viewers in early rounds with technical problems early so i would say a lot of people are enjoying it Automatically Appended Next Post: Bharring wrote:"You're unlikely to see 200 boyz at LVO anyway."
