Right now, I have a Walking Hive Tyrant with all melee weapons (Bone Swords/Bonesabers). What is the difference between a Walking Hive Tyrant model with the aforementioned loadout and a Swarmlord? Or could they be used interchangeably?

Thanks in advance!

Hive Tyrants don't have an option for Boneswords, the sabres are unique to the Swarmlord.

Swarmlord also has one of the best abilities in the army (or even the game) in Hive Commender, which lets you move a unit in range twice.

There's not really any competitive reason to take a walking Hive Tyrant other than Swarmlord. You really either want Wings or Swarmy's ability.

From the codex:

A Hive Tyrant may replace both pairs of monstrous scything talons with two items from the Monstrous Bio-cannons or two items from the Monstrous Bio-weapons list, or with one item from each list.

Please definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Monstrous Bone Swords are in the Monstrous Bio-weapons list.

You're right, apologies. SABRES are unique to Swarmlord, Boneswords you can take.

However you gain literally no advantage for taking a second set, and also they cost 20pts while Rending Claws are free. They are a poor choice.

That you are 100% correct on. Thanks for the info though. Since they are all magnetized, I'm thinking of making my Walking Hive Tyrant into Swarmlord.

Thanks again!

No probs! Magnetising is the way to go. While there isn't really a niche for Boneswords or a walking Tyrant this edition, who knows what the future will bring! Walk-rant with Boneswords might be meta one day.

If you want to use them interchangably then that would be fine, most people wouldn't know the difference between how Boneswords and Bonsabres look to begin with. The Swarmlord's much better though, S8 vs S6 and Hive Commander is a really powerful ability.

Walking Tyrants are kinda out of the meta right now. The difference between a Swarmlord and Hive Tyrant with swords is that one has sabres and the other has swords which are somewhat different(I think the swords are slightly longer?) Otherwise the head is different.

I don't think many people will notice the head so if you have arms magnetized you should be good to go with both configurations.
