Hello there,

This thread will belong to my little Imperial Guard project I recently started. My return to the Hobby after 15-16 years, with worse painting than ever, thanks to bad eyesight and shaky hands (helps at least for colour bottle shaking) which are both free giveaways of becoming older :-)

Just mid/end of last year I was picking up the old 40k stuff that was still in my parents basement to sell it, and somehow I slowly felt the beginning of an urge to pick up the hobby knife again and do something.. Looked a lot through Pinterest, the GW page and several boards and I thought "Why not?". Thanks to various 3rd Party suppliers and the new Necromunda Kits, I'm now finally able to do the Guard army I always wanted to do (more or less).

While I can afford the hobby easier than 15 years ago, the time became less – means I will probably update this thread very slowly and depending on my motivation the Spectres might even be limited to very small Collection :-) Thanks for reading and please excuse any english mistakes.

A short Background explaination
Located in the Segmentum Obscurus, Rothea is a civilized world which always had a high technological level and rich resources, with parts of its surface covered by hive cities while other parts of it were still used for agricultural and mining purposes. Due to Rotheas location it was always sourrounded by warp storms but still managed to keep a certain contact to the rest of the Imperium. After centuries of isolation in the 41st millennium because of one of these Storms the Planet was able to regain a mostly stable contact to Terra.

Within the centuries of isolation Rothea suffered from several attacks by Armies of the Chaos, Pirates and Renegades – luckily due to its highly trained PDF and orbital defense systems it was somehow able to survive the gruelling and repeating assaults. Without possibilities to get supplies or STCs from other imperial planets, Rothea was depending on its own resources to rebuild their weakened forces which resulted in non-standard creations of armory and wargear.

While it highly raised suspicion especially within the Adeptus Mechanicus, Rotheas technological creations are tolerated for now as reaching the planet far within the Segmentum Obscurus to excercise punishment is seen as too difficult and not of high priority - at the moment. Still, Rothea’s loyalty towards the Holy Emperor and the High Lords of Terra is unshattered and after released from isolation, the Planet’s regiments support the Imperium of Man and its forces against every foe.

The Rothean Guard Regiments are highly trained in urban warfare because of decades of defending the cities of their homeworld against various agressors, the most famous of these Regiments if the 99th, called the „Spectres“. Experts in recon and infiltration tactics, equipped with highly efficient gear which seems almost foreign when compared against the standard wargear of most Astra Militarum regiments and supported by unusual constructs and tanks that are definitely not liked by the Adeptus Mechanicus. Most notable is the Rothea N.N.C. Mk III, the „Anansi“ Crawler Tank: Fulfilling the battlefield role of Hellhounds it was originally constructed for battles within the crushed streets and destroyed alleys of Rotheas tortured cities, the Anansi crawls easily over piles of rubble and ruins while instilling terror in the Imperiums enemies with its melting and noxious weaponry.

The first pictures

Lt. Ephraim Kostacz, leading the 2nd Platoon of the Spectres. He is the first officer I built, not a major conversion but a bit character added with an old Sword I found in my bitz box (I think it’s part from an Yarrick model?). I like the pose of his hand, looks like he is reaching for the sword and ready to draw while facing the enemy.

Another fellow Guardsman, ready to fight the Enemies of the Imperium:

Bowis „The Blade“ Hellener. My very first model for the Spectres, I was still waiting for the wonderful Puppetswar heads but couldn’t resist to create at least something. As most people I’m not the biggest fan of the box-standing VS legs but luckily with a bit of cutting and GS it is quite easy to convert these into a kneeling pose. Head came from a Orlock sprue, shaved his face a bit to look a bit more military, less rocker.

Group Shot

And finally the already teased Anansi Crawler:

Probably just the first of a squadron of 2 or 3, I really loved the idea of crawling tanks but just using a Dunecrawler felt to bland. A little research and inspiration later I ordered the Armiger Warglaives and kitbashed Dunecrawler legs and Armiger body together. My first vehicle conversion ever, and again I’m happy with the result!
This little bugger (pun intented) will count as a Hellhound (in case I will ever face an opponent who is not happy with the quite different scale compared to the original hellhound chassis, I was thinking of creating a „hellhound-template“ out of plastic card or something that can be placed under this guy as reference for measuring etc. maybe even with a little height indicator).

Next in Line: My Company Commander, maybe my Count-as Vindicare (if I don't f**** up the sculpting of his Camocloak) and a first test of colours (I’ll probably ruin the models, never been a great painter). Coming up sometime in the future.

Fantastic work. Great ideas well execut3d. The best kind of blog

The walker like fantastic. Can you also combine the Onager turret with the other legs for a very Raven mech looking thingy?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I think it would look a bit like a slightly bigger, chunky Sentinel - have seen it somewhere but can't remember where. I'm not sure yet what to do with the leftover parts, might even be possible to somehow cut and repose the Armiger legs for another 4-legged Crawler

By the way, had more time to refine some more, excuse the bad lightnight.. daylight has passed and I put my desk lamp somewhere else..:

Major Nicolaw Helmbrecht, second in command of the Spectres. I wanted to keep the same look and feel of the Troops for the Commander, but still needed something distinguishing to separate him from the rank and file and lower Platoon commanders. After several attemps of bad GS casting and failed coat sculpting I gave up and just somehow squeezed the VS torso into a Commissars coat.

Lt. Ivac Stern, infamous marksman and Elite sniper of the Spectres. He usually operates alone beneath the main force to focus on priority targets and take out enemy commanders and specialists. Counts as Vindicare Assassin and originally created because somehow I dislike Ratling snipers and common special weapon snipers don’t feel worth their points. Usually not as headless in combat as it appears.
Actually my first attempt on sculpting a camo cloak and hood, still needs some finetuning and sanding and I have to resculpt parts of the neck/shoulder area. Oh and the Hood is sculpted but wasn't able to get a good image yet. If it won't work out I can still use the Scitarii head from the Onager sprue..

And a first color test:

(Re-)Learned a bit and will refine some of the techniques for the whole Squad, sadly I messed up a bit inbetween with a way to wet layer of not-so-dry-brushing and some other mistakes, but for the third model after 15 years she looks decent enough Not really happy with the base yet.. but I will think of something.

Last but not least my first two models after the hiatus.. basically these were my "test" if I'm still able to create something.. just a bit of Kitbash from everything and a first Idea for an IG Army but I decided against the theme, maybe something for a Kill Team in the future..

Great idea for.a sniper rifle. I was thinking of getting a long Las for my Van Saar gang, so I will be stealing this idea instantly

Any advice on painting straight lines? Tried to start some Rank insignia on the shoulders but no matter how careful I am, its more blob than line..

For rank insignia, you could print your own transfers to.get a consistent effect. Alternatively, do the blob the go back.oger the edgesin the base colour to.tidy the line up. I tend to load up.th3 whole.length of the brush with paint and use the fact that the brush is usually reasonably straight to get a starting point. Or use q pencil.to lightly.draw the pattern you are after and then paint over that.

Sweet conversions, the crawler especially is brilliant, and the aesthetic fits the infantry well! I also like that grey and orange color scheme.

Regarding the straight lines, make sure that your paint is sufficiently thin and flows of the brush nicely. Don't overload the brush. When you paint the line, move your brush from front-to-back, not side-to-side. Also, the brush stroke should be relatively fast. If you go really slowly and "carefully", you might end up with a shaky line. Finally, if the final lines are not totally straight, you could try to hide it by painting in some tiny scratches!

Quick update, a few more mostly painted Soldiers + Junior Officer:

Still trying to find the right consistency for the colour ... I was used to the very old Citadel paints (mostly Vallejo now), different primer, different brushes etc. and feel like I have to relearn everything but it becomes a bit easier.. luckily Guard armies tend to have a bit more than 20 models to practice. BTW: Thanks for the all the "straight line tipps", works better than before but there is still a bit cleaning and refining to do (not only on the rank markings but overall). And I still have to do a bit of research for the bases.. I don't want the grey guys on just grey bases, although it fits the cityfight theme.

More Spectres coming, mostly troops – I'm not in the mood for sculpting and refining Senior Officer and Sniper at the moment.

Really liking the look combining those heads and the van saar bodies give. The paint job is nothing to be ashamed of either, i rather like it.

For the bases, i would rust them up some. Although it might detract from the orange highlights instead of have them stand out.

These guys look awesome! Any project using the new Necromunda stuff is good viewing. The GS work on that tank is impressively smooth.

Good luck rocksville,

Just remember that painting an Imperial Guard army is a marathon and not a sprint.

Thanks for the kind comments, although I know that most people here have a lot more practice (and probably talent) than me it sometimes feels a bit overwhelming seeing most of the really impressive painting and converting at this board. But as mentioned by Captain Brown, a guard army is a marathon.. so I'll have some traning and there should be some improvement over time ;-)

Well, took me extra fine sandpaper (wet-sandpaper?) and a bit patience but wasn't that difficult.. the next time I will use the same GS/Miliput mix I used for the Cloak as it becomes a lot harder and is easier to sand and get a smooth surface.

Quick update with a bit of colour, first full Squad and first Tank done. I definitely need to get some better lighting for the next photographs...

I will probably design and print some decals sometime, just haven't had the right inspiration for a Regiment Badge or else. But I feel the Crawler definitely needs some Markings, Infantry too but they could work without as well. And I need to find some Dunecrawler legs for sale without buying the whole kit.. because there is still another Armiger laying around, waiting for becoming a second Crawler/"Hellhound" :-)

Wonderful asthetic and paint job to match, carving a niche between IG and tau. Don't suppose you have any 40k models around you could stand next to them?

The crawler looks great painted up! I like the balance between the relatively clean whites and the worn gun barrel.

Thanks :-) I really wanted to do something else with Guard than Cadians with headswaps or classic 40k Gothic (AdMech/Cadian/AoS Mix) which looks great but didn't feel unique enough. Tried a few heads on the rather high tech Van Saar Bodies and I felt the Puppetswar ones brought them back to an Imperial look and feel just close enough.

I sold most of my old stuff, there might be some old converted Chaos Marines laying around.. do you ask for a size comparison or do you want to see a battle scene?

So, I'm working on many things.. one of them is Heavy Weapon Teams. Would you guys say this counts as Heavy Weapon Team or would you add another Soldier? I was thinking about an additional operator, but on the other hand I feel like a) I like the idea of an autonomous walking heavy weapon and b) it feels like 2 soldiers + walking gun would be too much.. I can't decide :-)

Nice use of the Van Saar kit and I agree with the above that the crawler tank is very well done.

I love the combination of white and orange! I used a very similar colour scheme on some marines and guard I did a few years ago and always think about doing it again

The HWT looks like it's shaping to be yet another success, works really well with the rest of you force! I can't see any problem with using only one crewman, as the team is on a single base anyway.

Thanks all, I will probably update some stuff soon. Not too much as there is not a lot time to convert and paint at the moment, but Heavy Weapon Teams are in the making and the Company Commander is painted (although I realized while painting that I did a mediocre modelling work on him). And somehow the Van Saar Gang is sold out in all stores in my area, so I'll have to order some to recruit more troops.

Has anyone suggestions for fitting Leman Russ Tanks into the theme? Not sure if an out-of-the box LR looks right when sitting next to the Crawler. On the other hand it should still look like Imperial Guard.
