Good evening all. I am just starting to get into Hail Caesar, specifically the Aegean States. Planning on building a Spartan force via the army set.

I am having been looking at the Classical and Biblical book, but cannot seem to find a "pure" Spartan force in there. Is there another book I should be looking at?

No that is the only book, Aegean States were all pretty similar though.

Hoplite Greek, Later Hoplite Greek and Hellenistic Greek are all suitable for Sparta.

Cool! I wonder what it was now. Which army list are you going to use?

Going to go with a early Greek Spartan force.

Some of the army deal contents were not matching up with list building in the Classical and Biblical. Then I found the unit composition on pg. 16 of the main rulebook book.

Wondering if I should look at the Greek starter force to represent the early Spartan force? The helmets on the army deal troops seem to fit more in line with later armour. Does the Greek army deal have enough Corinthian style helmets without crests to equip everyone except the leaders?

Or just buy the Spartan force as is?

The army composition stuff took me a while to wrap my head around (more the unit and division sizes than the percentages), don't have my book in front of me but is the early Greek list the one where you can only have 50% of your force made up of Spartans whilst you need to have 75% of the army be Hoplites?

Unless you are playing with a group that are fanatical about historical accuracy I would just say go with what models you like most! All three Hoplite boxes (Spartan, Ancient, Classical) have their selling points, with the Spartan box having the Pilos helmet, the Ancient box having a mix of armours (none, linen and bronze which is useful for outfitting client states) and the Classical having a mix of helmets (including the Pilos). At the end of the day though a Hoplite is a Hoplite and unless you want to get really period specific it should make little difference but from what I remember the Pilos was adopted later than Corinthian helmets when armour was lightened across Greece generally.

Edit; In response to your edit, I am pretty sure that the Greek starter army has Corinthian helmets for all the infantry.

I don't think we are to worried about it. I am going to stick with the Spartan boxset.

So Spartan army box set, generals blister and king and bodyguard blister in my cart. Picking up a Greek-issue style temple scenery box set to go with it.
