I like the new Chaos Space Marine models, but I'm not sure about using them as Iron Warriors.

It's been a long time since I read the 40k Iron Warriors books (I read the Graham McNeill ones way back when). I've been reading a lot of the 30k novels and Forge World's Horus Heresy Book III: Extermination. From them I get the impression that the 30k Iron Warriors probably wouldn't put much time into personal ornamentation and would probably look down on those that take such decoration to excess.

The new CSM models (like most over the years) have lots of banding, trophies and other decorations. Would that be fitting with the Iron Warriors? Have their views on such things changed over time? In the 40k artwork they look just as gaudy as any other CSM, but the artwork often doesn't match the fluff from what I can tell.

I was thinking about maybe trying to do a true-scale project using Horus Heresy power armor, especially since my Iron Warriors are going to be a relatively small, elite army supplemented by lots of daemon engines and slaves (cultists) so there wouldn't need to be too many models to convert.

I'm totally down with people doing whatever they think looks coolest, I'm just curious what would be more in keeping with the background.

I agree that iron warriors have always stuck me as more practical when it comes to their gear, rather than ostentatious. However I do think they would display trophies but more from a psychological warfare perspective than I “look how awesome I am personally at killing dude” perspective

“Victory is not an abstract concept, it is the equation that sits at the heart of strategy. Victory is the will to expend lives and munitions in attack, overmatching the defenders’reserves of manpower and ordnance. As long as my Iron Warriors are willing to pay any price in pursuit of victory, we shall never be defeated.” - The Primarch Perturabo, Master of the Iron Warriors

Personally, I just use 30k models for my Iron Warriors.

Deimos vindicators, marines in mark III armour, etc.

They're the legion I would imagine changes the least, and takes care of their armour and equipment the best, in comparison to every other fallen legion.

That makes sense. Maybe I'll model grisly trophies on their field fortifications. That would be intimidating without getting in the way.

That's what I was thinking.

I need to get better at modeling before I start a true-scale project, but their use of bionics might make things a little easier.

My understanding is that 40k Iron Warriors will sometimes bind daemons to their euipment (particularly vehicles, but also sometimes personal weapons and armor). I could see that leading to some crazy looking stuff, but I think I'll try to keep most of the infantry fairly plain looking.

Type into Google images 'daemon prince iron warriors.' That will definitely give you some inspiration.

Yeah, I've seen some cool Iron Warriors daemon prince conversions.

I was thinking about making a Larana Utorian daemon prince with a bunch of Khorne Berzerkers, but it's been forever since I read the 40k Graham McNeill books and I can't remember if she died.
