Hi Gang

I got the Battle of Pallenor fields box set for Christmas.

Long story short I have the Good side built as a project with the gf teaching her the modelling side of things.

Someone at my local club has the Evil half built and wants to have a 500 point game in a couple weeks.
I thought 'easy enough I will use battle scribe to build a list'. But its frustratingly not working(its only letting me select heroes?) or I'm doing something very wrong. I tried using the Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game V54. Like what does the "determine Breakdwon & 25%" mean?

I read the rule book when I first got it and my opponent is aware I'm a novice.
All the data sheets are at my Girlfriends currently so only have the rule-book which I will have to study again to work out army building i guess..

Can anyone help me come up with a 500 point list using the palenor fields model set?

You build an army by selecting a hero and then fielding warriors to fill out their warband. (Some heroes can lead more warriors than others)

IIRC you have to click the hero in Battlescribe to get to the selecting warriors part.

The other options you mentioned are to calculate the point at which your force is broken amd reduced to 25% both common ways missions come to an end/ points are scored.

Right... I sussed it more or less. Had a bit of a brain fart.

Is the only way to have warriors of the dead to have the King of the dead leading them? (Hes a 100points and I doesn't come in the box so I don't have him)
Is there another way I could fit them into the army? Wanted to sue the as they are cool minis.

Also, does this mean the army that comes in the box set is not actually a legal list ?

It is tricky. You do need the king. You would also need Aragorn as the dead are impossible allies unless he is present. Even then you'd be giving up the army bonuses to do so.

Probably easier to just grab the king and three hunters and run the legendary legion Return of the King with your Dead.

Can't you just paint a bit of gold armor on one of the sword holding dead and call him the King for the sake of your list/game?

Warbands in matched play need a hero. The only hero in the "Dead of Dunharrow" army list (in the "Armies of the Lord of the Rings") is the King of the Dead. Therefore, you need the King of the Dead.
There are a few ways to get around this.
- The "Gondor at War" book introduces the "Herald of the Dead" hero. You can therefore include a hero that isn't the king of the dead. Disadvantage: the set doesn't include a herald, either . I suppose it might be easier to turn a basic warrior into a herald than it is to turn a warrior into a king, especially with CptJake's suggestion of using a different colour scheme for the hero.
- The army bonus for the Dead of Dunharrow allows you to field Dunharrow warbands without needing heroes. Disadvantage: Rohan are "impossible allies" with Dunharrow unless you've got Aragorn (a model that isn't in the box) in your force, and even then they'll be only "convenient allies". This means that you won't get the army bonus if you've also included any of the Rohen models.
- Ask your opponent (very nicely, and in advance) if you can change those rules.

It doesn't look like it's a legal list for matched play. However, it's presumably legal for some of the scenarios in the booklet (narrative play). There's also open play, although I don't know how popular that option is.

Disclaimer: I've not read the booklet that comes with the set.

Pelennor Fields gives you the core for three armies. The Army of the Dead, while "good", march for no man except their own liege, and the King of Gondor.

Thanks guys. Realy appreciate the feedback. I'll bear that in mind moving forward..

We will play 40k instead now. as its just going to be easier and I have some eldar painted/semi painted already.

I really struggled to make a list without additional models banner men/ dodgy conversions and more heroes.

Will re-vist the game because I really like the rules once I get more models. I want o get the fellowship box so will use Aragon to lead the dead.

One of the special rules of the warriors of the dead is that one of them can act as a hero - ie you don't need to put them into warbands with a hero, they can form their own warbands
