Hmm. I don't associate any of those things with the internet of 30 years ago. Maybe the dial-up speeds.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

A couple of weeks ago I showed my son some examples of ascci art. Something lost to the depths of time. Although you do get little squiggles of it in sigs sometimes.

Nitpick: The internet existed and has since the 60s, it's the World Wide Web that's only existed for 30 years

I racked up a $350 AOL bill on my mom's credit card, playing the original Neverwinter Nights at something like $6 per hour

Awesome graphics back then

No. Before the internet, there were various computer networks, some of which were connected using various different protocols including IP, email, Usenet, WAIS and others.

It's more Happy birthday WWW.

The internet itself grew out of ARPANET and is older.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

WWW is THE internet. ARPANET was A internet.

One is just a network. The other is the thing we all actually use.

Fair enough, Internet Protocol v0 though v3 existed from 1977 though 1979 and IPv4 was deployed in 1983 for ARPANET. Since it's called, ya know, the Internet Protocol, I'd personally consider the Internet existing from 1983 at the latest, with the World Wide Web arising in 1989. The first domain names were registered in 1985 according to a quick google.

The younger generation will never know the pain of waiting 5 minutes to see half a nipple exposed one line at a time on dial up, then losing your connection because call waiting kicked in on the house line. Streaming video and smartphones makes things all too easy nowdays, an infinite world of smut portable and in your pocket.

I'm a relative newbie to the internet. we got broadband in 2003, but i know the pain of listening to 10 minutes of dialup dubstep to get online from hanging out at my friends house.

My earliest memory of the internet is MSN Chat. not Messenger, the online chatrooms open to everyone. got closed down not too long after due to being absolutely rife with paedophiles.

Infecting your computer with viruses after downloading songs from Kazaa or limewire.

"Get off the internet, I need to use the phone!"

I remember those days...

I remember the "flash animation revolution", when movies online were flash animations, and they looped. no play bars or pause buttons, once you committed to watching madness combat, you were watching it for the duration.

And "badger badger badger mushroom" looping until it went out of sync.

hours playing original runescape...

Perhaps not as long ago as some but it still makes me nostalgic...

WWW works ON the Internet, and isn't the same thing.
VPNs, torrents, VOIP and lots of other stuff works over the Internet, and are not WWW.

But yeah, the current internet is born from the earlier versions.

Oh, and spinning and flaming skulls.

Let us all bask in the familiar early days sound of the internet

Back when you paid per minute like a telephone call; when if you called anyone up and they were online you get netsound down the phone

Back before google and youtube - when you were more likely to Ask Jeeves; when patches for games were still so big that (esp if you were in the countryside) you still got your PC Gamer magazine for the disk on the front. When the idea of Steam wasn't even a possibility.
