Would it be possible, and if so, desirable to add spoiler functionality to the img tag? Big images have a tendency to explode the size of a thread, and once people start quoting those posts, the problem is magnitudinally worse. I'll include a straw poll to gauge people's interest.

I always spoiler large images to not break site functionality, but I definitely would not like to see them automatically added.

No. Un-spoilered images improve the readability of the thread. If there has to be an automatic spoiler tag it should only be applied to img tags inside a quote, leaving the original image intact.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

A filter which could be turned on within an account profile to automatically spoiler larger images perhaps would suit better. I've no idea if the current mobile version resizes larger images automatically, though from what you're saying if it does, that functionality isn't transferred to whatever browser (PC or mobile) you're using. ...Or at least if it does, it puts enough of a strain on the page loading to be noticeable.

Which is to say that browsing the site myself, outside of quoting posts I haven't really noticed images which break a thread's formatting due to being too large (I am using a 1920 x 1080 display though). They can be an issue when posting and previewing your own thread, but otherwise the site scales them to be in line with the rest of the post's content if I'm not mistaken. Though yes, if users want the functionality, being able to automatically spoiler images above a certain size as a preference might become a thing (at least rather than a blanket setting for all users).

Smaller images that I intend to be shown inline are my preferred presentation in some cases?

I've seen forums that automatically reduce the size of images (say, to 800px wide).

As a halfway option, would it be possible to spoiler an image the second and subsequent times it appears on a page? Or have the spoiler tags automatically added when a post containing IMG tags is quoted?

Or you could ask the OP to spoiler large images, or alert a moderator if they need to be spoilered.

I don’t know what capacity there is to edit the code within a post, but it’d be nice if images above a certain width were automatically down scaled or spoilered. Some other forums have the “this image has been resized, click to view full size” thing happening which works reasonably well.

Some times a big image on dakka can make a thread damned near impossible to read on a PC let alone a laptop or mobile device.

One could do that, but it adds work to the user and work for a moderator to fix it, and by the time a mod gets around to fix it i(if they do at all) the conversation has probably moved to the next page.

Much better to have automatic functionality if it’s possible.

Like Ouze I usually try to spoil images that are too large. Dakka could probably use a function that maxes image size in the forums though. I've seen that around too. No idea how hard to implement it is.

I would like to see images inside of a quote get spoilered, but not “fresh” ones. On a number of the news threads I scroll thru them somewhat quickly just looking for images of new models
