Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to game 21 in our long running campaign. This battle, the forces of the Adeptus Astartes arrive on Triskelion,
intent on crushing the retreating renegade forces before they fall back to prepared defensive positions.

The renegade Chaos forces have been forced onto the back foot and are retreating ahead of advancing Imperial Guard battlegroups.
The mobile Astartes strike force is seeking to destroy the heretics in detail – particularly their armoured reserves.

Brother-Captain Hes’Tor of the Salamanders watched the timer in the corner of his helmet display wind down to zero as his Command Rhino raced across the uneven ground.

His armoured spearhead had moved swiftly from their insertion point to strike at the Renegade laager identified by orbital recon. The Chaos units had taken refuge in an abandoned adamantium mine
to regroup following their retreat from Imperial units. Hes’Tor intended for their refuge to become their tomb.

“Mark all enemy armoured units as priority targets.” He voxxed his accompanying units. “Our mission is to remove the enemy’s ability to conduct mobile warfare”
He paused as his helmet timer reached the last ten seconds until deployment. “Exterminate these heretic fools and liberate this world with fire and faith – for the Emperor!”

Hes’Tors cry was echoed across the vox net as the rear ramp slammed down and the marine force charged into the fray

Renegade artillery falls harmlessly behind the speeding marine units

Cultists swarm through the ruins

The Salamanders deploy in force

A scrum develops in the mid-field

Sons of Gord deploy into the ruins

They gun down a wave of heretics and charge the survivors

Cut them down!

The Salamanders cut down the first line of renegades and move on to the armour

Scouts and bikers force the flanks

The Sons finish the cultists

Don’t just stand there - shoot something!

Led by their veteran Sergeant, the Sons move towards a renegade Russ

The Salamanders in all their panoply of war

The renegades fall back against the fury of the marine assault

But the Salamanders will not be denied and quickly catch them

The renegade Russ attempts the same move

The renegade line bows under the pressure…

...and breaks as the Salamanders pour through the breach

The Sons catch the fleeing Russ

The renegades are encircled as Vanguard units land behind them

Purge them with flame! The Volscani infantry are routed

The Sons finish the Russ and with it, all organised resistance

Victory Imperium!

Hes’Tor looked with satisfaction at the shattered remains of the enemy force. The lighting marine assault had destroyed the renegade force as an effective fighting unit, just as planned.
He turned from the burning wrecks at the approach of a Sons of Gord sergeant. The red-armoured figure casually put down a wounded renegade with a bolter shot without breaking stride.
He stopped before the Salamander officer with a formal salute.

“Captain, enemy presence eliminated. My squads are policing the field and terminating any surviving traitors.”

Hes’Tor nodded his acknowledgement. The Salamanders and the Sons had a glorious alliance stretching back many decades, but the ruthless streak his allies exhibited often gave him pause.

His voxxed crackled with word from his orbiting cruiser. Another renegade encampment had been sighted and marked on his tactical display.

“Mount up all units – our work for today has only just begun…”

Well, with this game we finally entered the modern age with out first game under 8th ed rules. We kept it simple to get the feel of the rule changes and found it plays pretty well. I expect we will avoid CPs and stratagems in this campaign to keep things straightforward – too much hard work for beer and chips gaming!

Next battle we keep up the pressure – another marine attack on the cornered foe…

So it begins, this new 8th age of carnage amidst the laughter of thirsting gods.

It sure looked like the renegades took a bashing here, did the Astartes forces actually lose something ?

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Everything from the terrain to the photos is top-tier quality, as always, but the star of this battle report is that Renegade Leman Russ. The weathering and graffiti are so perfect, it looks like something straight out of the Imperial Armor masterclass books. The excellent painting really adds to the feel of the battle. I am glad you got some close up shots. Stuff like this is why I love good photo battle reports so much more than video.
