First of all, it looks good. Second of all, is this produced by the same people who made IT? And if so...are we starting to see the beginnings of a shared Steven King movie horror ‘verse?

I really hope so...

Castle Rock is a sort of attempt to create a joined up world. Don't think I've seen it on a UK TV channel yet, and I kinda lost interest, but not being a hardcore Kinger may mean a lot went over my head.

I don't think Maine can handle it. If it can, then there is a serious problem with Maine.

I am pretty jazzed about this. It's one of my favorite Stephen King books.

The original movie was.... eh. OK, not great. But the book! It's a master class in tension. I've never read another book that was so expert at having your feel "oh man, this is terrible...." and then it gets worse. And it gets worse. And now it's 4am and you get up in 2 hours, but you had to keep turning those pages.

Isn’t Pet Semetary the one book King almost didn’t publish because even he found it so unnerving?

It survived Jessica Fletcher’s killing spree, despite her successfully pinning the blame on A.N.Other every time. Pretty sure the supernatural barely registers....

Am I the only one disturbed by the horrible misspelling of the fairly simple word "cemetery" even on the film's posters?
Or is there a reason for it?

The 1983 Stephen King novel was spelled that way. I'm not sure why, but I'm sure he had a reason. Since most people are probably familiar with the original movie and novel (as well as the Ramones' song) you're probably in the minority that is disturbed by it.

I believe the sign that marks the "real" pet cemetery was written by kids, and thus misspelled all cutesy.

Yes. The original novel used that spelling.
The pet cemetery sign was drawn/painted by the local children, hence why it was misspelled. Something something crap standards of education in Maine.

If anyone cares, the original is showing on AMC right now. And yes, it’s spelled like that for the movie because in-movie it was because of a really young kid spelling it on the sign.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Ah, didn't know that. Just noticed the misspelling. Less perturbed by it now.

Exactly.

OK, saw this last night.

I didn't love it, and I didn't hate it.

The first 2 acts of the movie are terrific. Not only are they as excellent as building tension as the book was, they added a new element when they flesh out one of the character's backstories - excellent body horror. To be honest until the point where
Spoiler:
the truck accident
happens, it's one of the best horror movies I'd ever seen.

The problems are all in the third act. I don't think I can describe it without spoilers.

Spoiler:
They changed the victim of the truck from Gage to Ellie. This would be OK - it opens some doors to some creepy dialogue they can't do with Gage since he can barely talk, right? Great. Except they they decide to make Ellie significantly more physical. I am willing to suspend my disbelief that you can bury a dead being in a special barrow and it comes back to life as a malevolent entity, but it's much harder for me to do so at the prospect of a 9 year old girl dragging a 120 pound woman for miles to bury her.

Even then, I can probably handwave that away, but the scenes where Louis is physically fighting with Ellie... they are hard to sell. She must weigh what, 60 pounds? It looked ridiculous.

I also think they would have been better off using the last 10 or 15 minutes they had changed, showing how the whole family had become undead evil, to instead more gradual unspool how evil Eillie now was. She could have used a lot more unsettling dialogue, spaced out and escalated better.

In making the changes to the core plot they did, they set themselves up to do a somewhat different ending - I assume to stand out from the previous film - but I don't think it was a better one. I think it was actually objectively worse. Alien showed us 40 years ago that implied horror is usually better than onscreen horror.

Still, 2/3rds of a great movie and then 1/3rd of an OK one averages out to pretty good, right?

Implied horror was the best part of the book. From what I remember, the things that the resurrected said were the most horrifying parts of the book.

This was a real slog for two meandring acts to finally arrive at a couple of wasted moments and end up with a cool but throwaway shot at the end. Major disappointment.
