[img]40K fangame where starting in M31 you can play as a Mission from the Emperor, armed with an Imperial Charter and the best, but irreplaceable equipment, to destroy 7 worlds/threats that will one day pose a dire threat to Mankind... and you have 10,000 years to do it (about 800 hours in-game)

I need a writer... someone who loves the Lore to help me with a game.. maybe a couple people to help out with art or code. (not my first 40K game.... my first 40K game was reelased back in 1994.. sold 5000 copies, got a 5% review rom PC Gamer.... Warhammer 40K Dark Crusaders.. this one will be better.. so far about 6 months work in progress on it.

I gave it a dumb name.. and havn't fleshed out a lot.. concentraiting on just simming the 40K universe and the grunt work right now.. because I don't want to get too far in a story or whatnot until I can recruit some people, so that they can have their ideas in the game.. so... I'm not in love with the name, or the names of the Planets or ships... just all placeholders until I can get a basic, living universe that the player can exist in..

Player is charged with collecting the Imperial Tithe from a random sector of the Galaxy and return to Terra with it.

um.... (damn I need a writer).. ok, eventually I would like the game to be similar to Silent Hunter.. Player has a ship or a fleet and a misson, but has alot of freedom to do what they like. but for right now.. I'm going for something like "Oregon Trail".. fly around space, see the sights, make some interesting decisions and live to tell about it. Looking at the post from last year.. I'm not really as far along as id hope to be my now.. but.. i'm also learning to code still, so (see why I need a writer, because I ramble.. I should stick to outlines)

outline of what Id like to achieve
Player start
choose between a few characters and voidships..

Player starts in randomly placed Sector of the Galaxy at the start of the "Age of Strife" in M31
(The Frigate starts at Terra for testing, but the Star Gelleon ship starts out by that random sector (for testing), could be close to Terra, and easy trip, or on theother side of the galaxy..
Hitting Spacebar moves the ship forward, once ship is far enough away from Terra, player automaticzally transitions to the "solar system" map, which I borrowed heavily in style from Francesca Baerald's map of Sol in M31... (I should mention the Galaxy map I use as a base is based on Myssa's Azul Espanda map of the Galaxy in 40K)

once in Solar system view... i think it's kinda fun, becasue of the gravity.. but the Player should fly away from the Sun and open a Warpgate with "o" key.. (i did not code in any M-point limitations.. it's actually naturally difficult to enter a warp gate near a planet or sun because of the gravity.

game is in full 3D.. planets are to scale to ship... (so Terra is about 13,000 times larger than the frigate).. but not in "Solar System view",,, I'm working on that.. (right now it's just alot easier to do ground troops and orbital bombardment in a seperate "planet scene")

Open Warpgate with O.. then collide ship with warpgate object. and Player finds themselves in Warpspace.. (this has been tough.. and right now.. Player exists in both the Warp and in Realspace... I'm working on that.. I want it to be authentic, but i also want it to be Ok for the Player.. and most of all, I want everything to resemble the official art.. especially the paintings of voidships and space.

Player should be by that Imperial Sector.. which is represented by a 100 lightyear across cube right now.. with 3 "range spheres" 30Ly, 300LY and 3000LY.. to remind player of sence of scale.. for testing I'm giving the sector 5-10 "Imperial Worlds".. very generic worlds, want to flesh this out later and have several types of worlds, that generate Tithe..
I'm very happy about the worlds.. as they have a presence in Realspace which is fixed, but their presence in the Warp shifts and changes with the currents.. and a World trapped in a Warpstorm, well alot of things can happen making the world difficult or impossible to reach.

player collects Tithe (this is what I'm working on now) and returns to Terra.. with lots of dangers..

Starting in M31, there are not as much dangers as in M41, but the Player, if lucky will see the Imperium change (mostly events and each Age will have a set of variables kinda defining it.. but that's "background" since the Player is just one small cog and wont be able to affect much... )

I know Dakka has its share of creative people, both with a cogitator and a quill, but what would really help is if you create a clear and concise design document up front that people can look into, so they know whether or not they can help out with what your intended vision is for the game.

I'm kinda proud to say that I got my C&D in1996.. (6 months after I finished a kinda nice Civ2 mod called Fenris.... )

but yes... the important things to consider are... A, that I ensure that my fan game is non-commercial (same with the music, I promised Bloodgod that my fangame would be for free), B, that I do not mis-use the trademarks that are owned by GW (that means, no "furry spacemarines" unless they are Wulfen.. I guess... well, it's nebulous.. just repsect GW's "idea" of the spacemarine if you are gonna portray the spacemarine.. C.. Don't appropriate other people's art without their consent.. which is why I asked Bloodgod if I could use their music.. (I have made a call out to fans, and have a small collection of fan sketches that I plan to make into "stained glass windows" to decorate my ship..... and last is "no professional distribution" which I don't fully understand, to be honest..

and there is my weakness.. .. what I really need is a writer.. a person who loves the Lore and can string and can make words together that make sence… (unlike me)

and why i'm kinda showing it around.. I would like to attract one or two people, who will bring in their ideas... (my big idea is just having a simulation of the 40K universe and slapping the Player into it and see what happens...

a brief tour.. we are in an Imperial Frigate, near an Agriworld in a randomly generated system… there are 12 incoming ork Roks in the area, as well as some Imperial Cargo traffic making way from the M-point to the Planet...

The Roks are all heading towards the planet, and if they make landfall will (next update) deposit orks onto the surface.. which will head towards the nearest Hive city and, well...

I want Space Combat to be as Lorefull as possible (like book/art Lore rather than emulate BFG tabletop gameplay), so combat is quick, deadly and happens over vast distances...


(a lot of the effects, like from the Armageddon Cannons are "work in progress" and don't look consitant right now while I try out some ideas.)

Lets see, the Frigate shoots and disables a few ork ships.. but I gave each voidship a fairly indestructible Hulk/Hull... so, even though the ork ships are disabled, they still probably have orks on them.. and if they reach the planet's surface, the planet will have orks on it.. . so... (the Macrocannons will easily destroy that Hulk/Hull... but the smaller guns will not... )


The frigate receives some damage... but io havn't modeled that in yet.. just pretend that smoke and fire are streaming outta those gaps in the ship after taking damage...


We see the "minimap" or strategic map.. then a work in progress Galactic map.. and the "tactical Troop display" which is a work in progress as well..


Finally, the Frigate heads to the atmosphereless moon, and crashlands… destroying prettymuch everything on the ship except the nrealy indestructible Hull/Hulk that's is now on the surface.. and probably has some survivors on it..


Atmospheric Planets, the ships burns up in the Atmosphere and lands in a Hulk... usually at the bottom of the ocean...


(I'm kinda happy about how planets are being made.. continents, on top of a thin crust, on top of a fiery core... (needed to make the planets completely destructible as well as the various ship componenets. )



July 7th
Tanhausser Gate, a vignette

(I dont think anyone else is using "Tanhausser Gate" atm so i thought I'd appropriete it, and it fits in very well with the 40K lore.. The idea here, is going to be a randomly generated system... The Player still has their Crusade they are on, but should be able to stop here or anywhere for a couple hundred years or more if they want.. i want the planetary systems to be interesting enough for that..

so here in this scenario, we are in an escort frigate, near an Imperial World... there are space mines nearby, and stant flow of Cargo vessels to the planet... some wil arrive inabled" or in destress, and will be easy prey for pirates.. There is also going to be constant rain of Ork Roks comming into the system in an effort to attack the Hive on the planet...

the frigate only has 3 gusn right now, 2 of which are automatic.. the Armageddon Cannons will fire at any good target withing 15,000 KM.. and the Flak Guns will try and take out any nearby enemy ordinance.. you also have the broadside Macrocannons.. which Im working on, they are not perfect.. but will destroy a planet, eventually.

my goal is to have the Eldar and Ork pirates raid ships, hide out in the Gas Giant Ring, or wherenever... invade stuff.... basiclly I'm aiming for a simulation of the life of an Imperial Crusade and this system, Tannhauser Gate is just one stop along the way.


9 month progress.. and i'm concentraiting on just Planetary systems... I've got a very nice working Warpspace system, which I'll put back in soon..

Mouse fires broadsides, but it's bugged and only fires meh... but the broadsides will pretty much destroy anything.. even the planet's crust.. which it is supposed to.. only i havn't updated the planets yet to be made entirely of destructable continents and features..

alot of rough stuff, but I'm wokring on it

F5 will show you a basic troop view.. but it's very very rough.. the idea being that from here you will be able to give some basic orders to the troops, and the view highlights the areas nearby.. like the "embarkation deck" or the Macrocannons.. places troops will be interested in curing boarding actions.. and I think boarding actions are the best place to start, rather than the space hulks... (Spacehulks being the nigh indestructable bits of the voidships.. stuff that will survive falling onto a Planet's surface. ..

F2 is a very basic heads up Display.. right now, that first Ork Rok is perfectly linned up for a broadsides when scenario starts

even after an ork ship has been disabled, there is still ork on board, most likely, and if the hulk should land on the Planet.....

still not much to do.. starting a re-do of the voidships..

long before I started fangame, got inspired by some official art, of a voidship being torn in half.. so, the voidships in fangame are made out of component pieces so that parts of the ship can get blown up, and (long term plan) become brand new spacehulks.
