I have finally decided to bite the bullet and see if I can paint Epic Squats. It is something that I have been meaning to do for many years but have never got around to... however, after a 'rubbish' bid actually won an item on EBay, I have got hold of five mint sprues of Epic Squat Warriors.

I have decided that it will just be for show so I can build it however I like with no need to fit in with the rules... this is just a modelling project, not a gaming one... that means that I can add what I like and make another characterful little army .

So... with that in mind, I have sorted out the organisation and have decided to start with the army commanders. These five are finished apart from basing (which will be home made from plasticard to make them nice and thin):

Next up will be the ten-Squat command squad to join them .

Cool stuff take a look at Onslaught Miniatures stuff available through Vanguard Miniatures if you want to expand!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I am looking VERY closely at Vanguard Miniatures... Very closely, indeed . There are some very interesting vehicles in their range... more than the Onslaught vehicles. The Onslaught troops are great but I'd rather stick to the little GW Squats (for now)... unless I decide to have a mercenary faction...

Nice idea, great bit of nostalgia. Liking the level of detail you've painted on such small models, look forward to seeing this progress.
Are you going with the five in a line style bases or the earlier square base look?

I am not sure what shaped bases I will be going for but they will be home made so may be quite randomly shaped... I want to get a few units painted so that I can tackle the bases in bulk. My plan is to use plasticard and cut holes my self. That way, I can keep the bases nice and thin .

Some Thudd Guns today :

The next unit will be another Thudd Gun unit. I have them clipped off the sprue, ready for clean-up and base coating .

Three Thudd Gun Units (each with command) plus a company command unit, will make up an Artillery Company.

At the moment, I am suffering from a bit of Insomnia so I am too tired to paint (no focus for big stuff, let alone tiny stuff ) but I haven't been idle... I have decided on some of the vehicles and will be using these for standard troop transports (10 man):

https://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/shop/novan-elites-trojan-apc-squadron-copy/

these for smaller sections of troops/Thudd-Gun towing vehicles:

https://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/shop/novan-sparta-apcs/

and these for the Exo units:

https://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/shop/novan-elites-mauler-assault-transport-x-2/

These will just cover the standard transport requirement and won't, in any way, prevent me from adding more exotic vehicles at a later date .

The Vanguard APCs have arrived and they are lovely, crisp, casts of some very detailed little vehicles. Here is a comparison (hulls only) of the relative sizes:

In other news... the first of the infantry squads is finished:

I haven't stopped... just paused... so here is the second infantry squad:

I have started on the command and heavy weapon squad now so I'll soon have a full platoon (Command Squad, 2 Infantry Squads, Heavy Weapon Squad) . The vehicles will be tackled when the infantry is complete...

... speaking of infantry, I have bought another five sprues of them but don't plan on buying any more (and spares will be sold off).

I've slowed down a bit but here is the last squad for the infantry platoon; a heavy weapon support squad:

That means that Orange company, blue platoon is finished .

I have primed the next platoon and have cleaned and based the third platoon on cardboard, ready for priming... but next on the painting table is the third Thudd Gun section .

Very nice. That is a great colour scheme for them.

I'm surprised at how detailed the old squat infantry are. They one of the few things I've never picked up for epic.

Cheers . I am going for a more realistic paint-scheme for them, rather than the bright colours you so often see... and that is why I am not planning to have land trains because they look a bit silly. That doesn't mean that I won't have large vehicles... just not land trains.

As for the details, I agree... I was very surprised at how easy the details can be picked out... they are very cool little dudes .

I am currently painting the last Thudd-Gun unit but have been slightly distracted by a scratch-built titan... that I have now hidden away so that I am not distracted until I have finished more painting !

I like the very military green you use, and the contrasting flashes work beautifully.

Coming on nicely, though sad to hear there will be no land trains. Admittedly they were one of the sillier units but definitely iconic

Land trains could be done with less silly counts-as units, though. The concept could reasonably be expanded into something like a convoy of heavy haulers, trucks, traingun carriages and whatnots without necessarily resorting to "trains with no tracks" if that aesthetic does not make one tick.

Great work inso, they look almost as cool as their big brothers in your 40k squat blog! I can’t believe how detailed they are for such small minis!

Was the red and blue on your last thudd gun battery intentionally using the Royal Artillery colours? Nice choice regardless!

Cheers .

The Red/Blue is purely coincidental... The Thudd-Guns are from blue company and have three sections; Yellow, green and red. My infantry units are from Orange company and will have different colours for each platoon .
