Ok so building my first Astra Militarum list and have a question that might be really stupid but here goes

Where are the required units listed?

From what I see I don't have any required units but that doesn't feel right.

So if I want
Platoon commander
Command squad (4 guys)
2-6 Infantry squad (10 guys)
just buy them all and they all fit into a platoon?

Now if I had 2 platoon commanders I would need to split the infantry squads between them right?

There are no required units.
Unit types, for Battle Forged detachments, yes, but no units are 'required'.
Look for the Battle Forged instructions in the rulebook.

A Battalion requires 2x HQ choices and 3x troops choices.
A Platoon Commander is an Elite slot choice, not an HQ. A Company Commander is an HQ choice, and will fill one of the slots.
The same applies for a Command Squad, as they are an Elite choice, not an HQ one.
You would want 3-6 Infantry Squads as Troop choices, as 2 is one too few.

Commanders have nothing to do with squads, but they can have effects/auras that the squad can use. Commanders can also give orders to the squads.

If you took a Battalion detachment, you could run the commander as a company commander, but you would need another HQ to go there too.
You might want a Patrol detachment, as it only needs 1x HQ and 1x Troops. Some others (more Elites and Troops) can go it it when you have the minimum.

The typical IG Platoon you used to get doesn't exist anymore. You have Company Commanders, Platoon Commanders and Infantry Squads but they're all seperate entities now.

In your example you could create a Battalion Detachment using 2x Company Commanders and 3x Infantry Squads. This is a cheap way to get 5CP, and is also known as the "Loyal 32" due to it's high model-count, low cost usage.

Depends on what games you're playing. This is not the same as previous editions; the Platoon formation is gone.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Thanks for the feed back. I know I'm mixing stuff up in my head just need to build a few lists and practice it.

I'm planning out my Astra Militarum build with models I own so want it all pointed so I have a plan of attack.

Thanks again

So Infantry squads with a heavy weapon team get the 60mm bases for those teams now? Or only the Heavy weapons squads?

Also Heavy weapon squads say they are 3 teams (Guard heavy weapons are maned by 2 troopers) but the also says Each model must take a item from heavy weapon list. At first is sounds like they are saying all models get a heavy weapon so you could get 6 heavy weapons but that can't be correct. I assume they are now treating the 2 man team as 1 model now because they have 2 wounds one for each troopers. I think I answered my own question here but please check me to be sure.

Yeah, you just have to look at the model to see its the latter - the two models become a one model “team” with a loader/handler and a gunner who operates the weapon - one heavy weapon per team.

Though, honestly, looking at the model for the rocket launcher, it should have the advantage that it is the only heavy weapon that requires a single operator.

It never ends well

You are correct.
Both the Special Weapon Team and the Heavy Weapon Team have 6 infantry bodies in the squad.
The difference is that the HWT has 2 per base, and one heavy weapon per base. This means there will be 3 bases per squad.

This is the same as when an Infantry Veteran Squad takes a heavy weapon. 2 bodies merge onto one base, and take a single heavy weapon. The squad still has 10 bodies, but now 9 bases (one is a double).
Command Squads too, with 4 bodies whatever they do.
