With the new Codex around the corner, i'm looking for some advice on what to get to start the army with...

3x start collecting box + more battle line?
then make one of each leader riding the magmadroth?

Hearthguard units?

All advice apreciated

How strong do you want it to be?

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

I mostly play with friends, but I will be taking part in local tournaments with the army..

Looking at the new Battletome, there seems to be a few changes that may change the army composition.

Hearthguard berzerkers are the go-to 'op unit' of the book so if you are looking to tournaments I would recommend stocking up on them. Two start collecting boxes would be good, as that will give you access to two 'droths (assemble one as a runefather on droth & runesmiter on foot, one as whatever you like) as well as some vulkite units that make for good battleline when you aren't going all-out and make for a cheap means of filling slots even when you are.
