Below is the second battle report, this time against a mechanized opponent which I felt might be a weak spot for my army. T8 is no joke in high enough amounts.

My questions are these:

1. The Black Legion portion of the list isn't in a Vigilus Special Detachment. Should it be? After going through all the benefits, only the Devastation Battery looks any good really and even that would require YET ANOTHER point be spent on the Detachment and another for the Warlord Trait (so total of two). I'm already popping for an Extra Relic, the Raprotal Host, and the extra Warlord Trait for Haarken as it is... 3CP before I blink. Am i missing an opportunity by not using the Devastation battery? Is it worth yet another CP and the CP's to gain that round one free shot?

2. Havoks or....Predators? The Havoks can only ever be in 5 man squads now which makes protecting them more difficult. Admittedly, T5 does somewhat ameliorate that sometimes, but not against a lot of weapons. Can't bury them in wounds anymore. That they can move without penalty is big because you can protect them turn one should the die not fall your way. So there's a lot ot like about Havoks. I'm just wondering if a Predator with lascannon sponsons would be just as good. Only slightly more expensive but of course tougher. Predator Autocannons are much better than they used to be so it's something to consider and put out there to you...

3. I'm currently using 30 Cultists in my Black Legion Detachment. Is there a trick or some little optimization I can make in order to make them a little more useful? I gave the stubber to two of the units since its like 2 points, but outside of that i am sort of struggling to get some mileage from them in my planning. perhaps it is what it is. Hadn't ever used them instead of Chaos Marines before and I'm trying it out. As they are rearguard, it made sense to slot them in but now that Ive seen them a couple times...

4. Raptors: Easily my favorite part of the aesthetic. They are made better in the presence of their forward leaning commanders: Haarken WorldClaimer and my Night Lords Warlord. Aside from the fear they generate, the Raptors are re-rolling 1's, and then re-rolling all hits in melee. That's great for a unit with Combi-melta, 2 Meltaguns and 11 pistols. They re-roll charges because: Icon of Wrath, and they get a +2 charge from the Raptoral host Warlord Trait. It elevates what is basically just a Chaos Marine with wings to a little higher level, though they die just like Marines. The question is: Terror Strike lowers all leadership characteristics of any unit near a Raptoral Host unit after it kills something. Lets say a leader character has LD 9. That now becomes 8. Herald of the Apocalypse makes it a 7. So when you have a character that says "units within x distance use his leadership", is that mandatory? Is it possible to have that ability and simply not use it? Are there exceptions? Can the unit just use its own if its better, or must it use hers/his when better?

Hammer and Anvil deployment, IG finished deploying first, Chaos Space Marines won the roll for initiative and no sieze. ITC Mission 1

1
Havocs rose up and fired on the Stormlord, doing 17 wounds. The Dark Apostle and his Cultists moved forward on the left. The Biker Champion slammed into the Chimera to the left. The other cultists and Marines held back and took objectives.
The chimera pulledaway and the Imperial Guardsmen got out to put three wounds on the Chaos Lord. The other tanks moved out of their positions to take aim and fire o nthe Havoks. They managed to kill 4 of 5 in one unit and a couple from the other.
2
The Raptoral Host dropped in right of center with Haarken WorldClaimer and my Warlord to the fore. Abaddon droppin in into his right side backfield behind a Leman Russ tank. The Havocs and Raptors dedicated their fire to the tanks now revealed, nearly smashing two of them, one with one wound left, the other with two. The Raptors charged, killing one but not the other. Abaddon all but destroyed the tank he was fighting (It survived with a re-roll on one of its saves). The Biker Champion jumped at the Imperial Guard and plunged his fist into a couple of them. The Dark Apostle continued his advance.
The Stormlord responded aiming a lot of its guns at the Havoks and the rest at the Raptors. The Raptors were in Midnight Clad, however, and the gimped Stormlord had to hit them on 6’s, so it didn’t do much, but the Havoks did lose all but one of their number, a lone Lascannon wielding guy.
3
Combined Raptor Melta killed the Stormlord. Its occupants were quickly engulfed into combat and the Night Lords tore men apart with talons and fear. Two unit remnants were so terrified that they ran off the board. Another had deserters.
Harrken and the Warlord destroyed the guardsmen that were bothering the Biker Champion.
Yarrick, a Platoon Sergeant, a Commissar, an Ogryn bodyguard and a Primaris Psyker assaulted Harrken and began what would be a long back and forth of blows. The Biker commander killed the Ogryn Bodyguard but succumbed to his wounds.
The Guardsmen not terrified to death made a beeline for the objective Abaddon was on, along with a Platoon Sergeant.
Inquisitor Greyfax and her retinue walked forward and handed the Raptors a pretty severe beatdown, forcing all but one to die or flee. The tide was turning but was it soon enough.
The Callidus Assassin showed up out of nowhere and tried to gut the Warlord from behind. She was partially successful, catching him off guard but his dark blessings were truly great, and he returned the favor by shredding her with his Claws of the Night Hunt.
Overall the Acolytes and Greyfax had aquitted themselves EXTREMELY well.
4
Abaddon tore through the Imperial Guardsmen who were brazen enough to try and take his objective.
Raptors came around the corner and blew apart the Chimera, then charged GreyFax and her retinue, but not before a Chaos Space marine missile killed the commissar next to her. They killed the Acolytes but the Power fist of the Raptor Sergeant merely did 2 damage to GreyFax herself.
Haarken and the Warlord continued their pounding on Yarricks group and killed the Primaris and wounded the Platoon Sergeant again, but Yarrick was too tough a nut to crack. His refractor field helped him again and again.
Inquisitor Greyfax used her Psyker powers to wipe 6 of the 7 Raptors out that had surrounded them and killed the last one. All that remained of the Raptors was one lonely Raptor Sergeant on an objective from the round before. Chaos learned of a powerful new enemy that day. And her name was GreyFax.
Yarrick finally managed to kill Haarken with his laser eye!
It was at this stage the Imperial Guardsmen decided to retire from the field. With my Warlord ready to strike Yarrick down (he hadn’t attacked yet), and with only Yarrick, Greyfax, and a Platoon Sergeant left alive… The fight was over.
It was 24-12 when we called it. By rule the last two rounds would be scored as 4-0. Total score then was 32-12.
Night Lord Victory.

You are lucky Yarrick decided to let you win that one. He only wanted to kill one chaos lord that day and once he did he decided he was needed elsewhere.

Black Legion
Abaddon The Despoiler
Haarken Worldclaimer (Lord of Terror and cause Raptor stuff even tho he's Black Legion)
3x 10 Cultists
2 x 5 Slaneshi havocs (Two Las, 2 missiles)

Night Lords (Khorne Marked, Raptoral Detachment)
Chaos Lord W Jump Pack (Black Hunt, Tip of the Claw)
Dark Apostle (Im dropping him soon)
3x5 Chaos Marines (Plasma pistol, Missile Launcher)
3x14 Raptors (Powerfist, Combimelta, 2 x meltaguns, Khorne banner)

+2 to charge and re-rolling those charges is pretty solid and you can use the From the Night Strat to get +4 instead to one unit if you charge from cover. Gets them into combat reliably. Need more help making charges? Raptor Strike gives you 3D6 charge distance. Mass them around their leaders and then let the talons fly.

Abaddon is there to take care of business against tougher things, usually deep Striking but he CAN be used to protect and buff the Havocs. The Havocs are the initial can openers, along wit hthe three other missiles launchers and also good for causing some wounds to the units around your true targets which then allows the terror of the Night Lords to kill off surrounding models as well.

The terror aura from Haarken couples with the Night Lords penalty to create a potential -4 LD. In addition, Harken makes you roll an extra die for leadership as does the Dark apostle if he gets close (he frequently doesn't, but the Flay them Alive Strat lets you add a D6 as well to the effort so it's not looking good for the enemies of the Night Lords) and then the stratagem Terror Strike can add an additional 1 for a unit kill to all within 6". So if you kill a unit, units nearby are forced to -5 LD, rolling on 2D6, 3D6 or even 4D6 and taking the highest before considering their losses, which the havocs surely will try to contribute to.

Viscious Descent lets you re-roll hits when you DS, while Prey on the Weak lets you hit like a champ later and Veterans of the Long War lets you wound like a champ when needed. Chaos Boon can be beneficial as well since your characters are pretty important to the army. In Midnight Clad is a great Strat for keeping your shooting alive and active at the beginning of the game, if you don't want to pay the two points to use prepared Positions.

You could burn a lot of CP pretty fast, so like the Night Lords, you need to plan to hit hard and fast and you will be thirsty for CP when you're done. Collect them from the dead.

We tested playing WITHOUT premeasuring and for that reason also tested using the old ds rules with a slight modification. So nice not to spend the time it takes two people to hmm and haw over a dozen measurements. Really was!

Battle report video follows. 23 minutes or so, condensed report.

What do you typically start on the field vs what's in reserve? I've been making tons of jump infantry as I'd love to do something like this.

I put Abaddon, Haarken and the Chaos Lord in DS with a couple Raptor Squads as you can see in the report. Scope it out.

The Havocs, cultists and marines stalk the backfield, taking their opportunities and blocking off DS's on the Havocs etc...

The Host Raptoral (Vigilus Ablaze) really makes the army go. Coupled with the Mark of Khorne banner in each Raptor Squad they are highly reliable on the DS.

My last game, the Astra Militarum ended with just 3 models on the table and i ended with 7 (two of them wounded leaders). So trust me when I say that fortitude is not the armies play and aggression is. Maximum aggression or you will lose. Lock things up and keep it coming to control the board while you score. I posted up above the strats that are useful. There are different ways to make the army but to me, nothing screams Night Lords more than Raptors and I wanted that fluff at maximum volume. They are just Marines with Wings though so you do need to feed them synergies and strats to make them buzz like bees. I don't mind because they are awesome.
