Yep, it's voting time again. This month, the theme for the challenge was The Art of War. Whether fearsome combatants in their own right, master strategists overseeing the campaign or living embodiments of war and battle, we've got a whole host of entries to pick from this time.

Excellent work this month everybody. It's my first month entering, but it's been a lot of fun (hope you guys like the Autarch!). I gathered from the last thread that a lot of folks limit themselves five votes or so, so I'll do that. As much as I love all the stuff here, it kind of defeats the point of the vote to vote for all of them.

- I can't not vote for QAR's Horus - even the marble staircase alone is worth it - and the rest of the model is pretty sweet too. I love the subtle and yet perfectly done face. I tend to keep all my guys in helmets to avoid painting faces, but that one is brilliant.
- DV8's Nagash gets a vote for obvious reasons; it's stunning from top to bottom.
- lipsandpips' Sons of Orar - I love your painting style. Clean and perfectly executed. It's also a chapter that I'm fond of (for reasons that I can't quite remember - I've got one as a Deathwatch sergeant myself) so it's cool to see someone painting them.
- DoS's Stormcast Liberator - although I'm generally not a fan of Stormcast, the style of NMM you've gone for gives it a really cool cel-shaded look, which is something a bit different and rather effective. Certainly worthy of a vote.
- Midget Gems' Ork strategy meeting - such a cool concept I think I'd vote for it even if the painting was awful, but of course it's not, it's really well done. So marvellously orky!

Everyone else - great work all. Picking my votes from this lineup was tough, there's a lot of stuff there that I really like. Keep it up, and hopefully the turnout is as good next time round.
(He says, not sure if he'll have an entry sorted...)

A Protoss colony world

I guess I'll go ahead and comment on everybody's entry this time around. Lot of finished ones for this month, too! Here goes:

Nevelon: I love the new Calgar model, and you did some solid work on both him and his Victrix Guard. I think a few edge highlights might help break up all that solid blue and make them really pop.

Rybrook: That model looks pretty old school, which is always fun to see. Very clean paintwork too. Some closer photos might help us see that clean paintwork a little better.

Deadshot: Pretty cool lineup of characters from different chapters. Calgar's interesting to see in Blood Ravens colors, but I think I like Dante the best.

Flinty: Those bases look great! The guys themselves look pretty good too. Reminds me I need to get on with painting my own Blackstone Fortress stuff!

DrGiggles: Nice looking Khorne Herald there (or Bloodmaster I guess they're called now). I love the accessories like the chainmail and skulls on chains. Did you sculpt that chainmail yourself? I don't think I know of any actual chainmail-wearing Bloodletter models.

ZergSmasher: I'm pretty proud of my Daemon Prince of Khorne, but some of the other entries in here have me wanting to just eat my paints. I still need to learn to make metallics look better. I feel like I'm getting there, so that's something, right?

queen_annes_revenge: Horus might be my favorite of the FW Primarch models (until they release the Lion of course), and yours looks absolutely amazing! The purple cloak and the stone base are probably my favorite parts.

Vejut: Yet another really cool characterful model from you. This might be my favorite model you've entered yet. Definitely something you don't see every day; a crocodile going to a gaming convention.

Captain Brown: That one guy is definitely compensating for something. That's actually a cool way to pick out which one is the Exarch. The models turned out great!

JamesY: Pretty solid work on that Chaos Lord. Some more photos would have been nice to give us a variety of angles, but he does look pretty good.

DV8: There simply are no words adequate for this masterpiece.

Tikay Fortooun: That Avatar looks like he's been doing some wet work! The old sculpt hasn't aged particularly well, although you did a pretty good job on it regardless! The blue and gold scheme does work pretty well, and good job showing where the blood would drip from the hand onto the leg of the model.

lipsdapips: I always like to see some Marines in a less common color scheme, so it's nice to see some Sons of Orar. They look really good!

Tyranid Horde: Another nice set of old-school Aspect Warriors. I think you nailed the look for Fire Dragons; the highlights on the orange armor really make it pop.

GulGog Tuftoof: Very solid work on that Skitarii guy (what is the singular for Skitarii? Skitarius?). I like how you got the subtle blue effect on the power maul; a lot of them I see even from commission painters have OSL that is way too over-the-top. Kudos on freehanding the details on the robe!

Jadenim: Nice mix of armor types there! Only thing I might say they could use is some highlights on the blue. They still look pretty good!

Maharg: Pretty solid work. Could maybe use some spot colors to break up the metallics (like a few brass looking bits here and there) but still nice looking.

AUGmaniac: That Clamavus looks pretty gritty and dirty, as well he should! The Black Legion guys turned out pretty solid too.

Modock: Ah, more nice Infinity stuff. As always, I envy your ability to paint such tiny fiddly models to such a high standard.

ShadowsAndDust: The color gradient on the sword looks really cool, and overall the model is very nicely done.

DanceofSlaanesh: I'd love to see more photos of this guy; he looks pretty fantastic! Non-metalliic metal is something I've never even thought about trying despite how good it can look when executed well as you have.

Midget Gems: This is a pretty clever little diorama. Orks ain't da artsiest gitz in da galaksy, but dey do love a good scrap! Anywun 'oos told dem udderwise has gotten dere zoggin' 'eads mashed!

feltmonkey: I love the constrast between the drab colors of the clothing and the brightly glowing sword! Really good color choices there.

SmallChanges: Iron Warriors always look really cool with the yellow and black striped details, and yours turned out well. I think I really like the darker colors on the shoulder pads and backpack knobs.

Ezki: A Succubus is a Drukhari model, but this one looks more like a Daemonette to me. Interesting use of Daemonette bits to make the model look more sinister, but I hardly think the Aeldari would approve given their prior relationship with She Who Thirsts...

Bellerophon: I love the Biel-tan color scheme, and you executed it very well on that Autarch! The shades and highlights really make the model look excellent and show the details off.

Stormatious: I know in the actual challenge thread you said you weren't happy with the base, but honestly it doesn't look that bad, and the model itself looks good enough that the base hardly matters at all.

dukeofbeer: I love the patterns on the ax and shoulder pads! Really make the model stand out to me. I imagine they weren't easy to pull off either, so definitely some respect earned there!

Chris56: That's a really interesting look for an Eldar character with all those pastel colors. Gives the model kind of a ghostly ethereal look which is very different.

Paradigm: Theoden looks absolutely amazing! I love that sculpt, and I think you did it good justice.

Peregrine: I like how you got a dog together with the Death Korps officer. Seems fitting somehow, the war-weary commander touring the battlefield with his faithful companion by his side.

Overall I think that not only were there a good number of entries, but the quality of said entries is very high too. Everyone should be pretty proud of their work this month! Shout out as always to Paradigm for running this challenge and dealing with setting up the threads and whatnot. See you all in the May challenge!

Voted for 10 or so, but favourites of the month are DV8’s amazing Nagash and DanceofSlaanesh’s extreme NMM Stormcast; almost comic strip shaded (and looks really good ‘cause of that).

A lot of outstanding work from everyone! Personal favs are QAR's Horus and Modock's Raoul. Super clean as always, although @QAR we've already spoken about the color and values. Lipsadip got my third vote (I always do Top 3), but I wish you would experiment more. Your work is crisp and neat, but feels very safe. I'd love to see you try tackling something more organic and maybe more freehand or crazier lighting or something. I dunno. Still great work though.

Thanks Zerg. Yeah I sculpted the chainmail myself, wanted to try a kitbash and work on my sculpting skills this month. I made the herald with bits from the bloodletters, bloodcrushers, and ork Nob kits and used the chainmail to hide some of the gaps and make it look a little more unique.

Thanks for the comments Bellerophon and Zerg

Great month and lots of really good entries to choose from, think I've had to give out at least a dozen votes

While I type up some comments hear are a few translated extracts from "Da Art of Waaagh!" (by the cunning Mork Tzu) now imperial scholars have found a copy, some of them they are wondering if they have made a mistake.

“Appear like a Grot when you are strong, and like a Warboss when you are weak.”

"The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy with Waaagh!"

“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as a cave squig, and when you move, fall like a thunderfart.”

Feel free to add your own translations from the book to this thread and increase the collective knowledge for all those aspiring generals out there

My votes this month went to:

JamesY: Chaos lord is well executed and full of nostalgia

DV8: How can I not vote for that Nagash! It's oozing with character and has a brilliant paintjob

Feltmonkey: those wood elves have some of my favourite sculpts from GW. You've also treated them to an excellent paintjob that befits their character.

Paradigm: Great work doing justice to a classic character! A simple, effective paint job. No nonsense, no extravagance, just a solid piece of work.

Peregrine: I am a big fan of the subtle conversion work you did on this miniature. DKOK already have great character, and you've done well to stress this point with your entry!

For those who have voted/commented for my Sons of Orar - thank you very much. I appreciate all the feedback and always love this competition. I always value subtle kitbashing and characterful miniatures; this is sometimes reflected in the way I vote. My SOA character for example uses the emperor's champion legs in an attempt to generate a unique character who nevertheless looks like he could be bought off the store shelf. I tend to stay consistent in my painting because I like the style that I have developed and pride myself on the uniformity of my display cabinet. I am branching out to different types of miniature and I feel adventurous in this respect. I respect those who bring their A-game to this competition each month with a totally different look and painting style, but I lack both the ability and desire to do that. I really appreciate this competition for its inspiration in getting me to finish projects consistently and promptly, and within those bounds, I am proud of where my work's at and love seeing what everyone brings to the table!

Here's to another great series of entries and exciting voting! Good luck to all.

@Zergsmasher; the highlights I do tend to be really subtle, so I thought I’d try not doing them this month. Apparently it is noticeable, so back to highlighting! (Note: not a complaint, useful feedback.)

Thanks for the votes, whilst I'm happy with the model, the photograph lets it down a lot, so really wasn't expecting any with such a high standard this round.

My votes were for queen_annes_revenge, DV8, lipsdapips and paradigm, fantastic entries from all. That nagash is sublime though, a stand out entry this month.

Thank you for the comment! You have a fair point. The idea for this conversion was to make the model look more like an actual succubus, as I'm creating a bit different kind of Drukhari army.
I too thought that it might look a bit too much like a Daemonette, even though the head is the only daemonette bit used. The rest are from Drukhari and Wych Aelf kits.

A great month! I struggled a bit with the vague theme, and I'm struggling again this month to think of something that really fits.

Nevelon - Always first out the gate, usually Ultramarines, always more than one miniature. That display case of Ultramarines is going to need another wing built onto it soon at this rate!

Rybrook - Great colours, and this model really reflects the Ultramarines' association with Roman Legionaries.

Deadshot - Great details, good finishes on the paint. Well done on painting so many characters, as well. I particularly like the gold feller's axehead.

Flinty - The Blackstone Fortress models are great, aren't they? I like how you've broken up the earthy colours with some brighter spot colours. Is there a red team and a blue team?

DrGiggles - Nice kitbash, and great job sculpting the chainmail yourself!

Zergsmasher - An eyecatching dude with a very gory axe. Nice work.

queen_annes_revenge - A very nice Horus. The purple cloak, the steps, and the face are the stand out areas. Great job!

vejut - This is some of your best painting. The highlighting on the clothes is good, and the details really bring out the character of the model - things like the drink can, the groceries in the bag, and the name tag. I love it.

Captain Brown - Clean, bright colours. There's probably a reason for this in the rules or something, but why does that one guy have a much bigger, more bulbous gun? They all look like they're overcompensating, but he looks like he's REALLY overcompensating.

JamesY - Well done on making a model painted with quite muted colours look interesting.

DV8 - Certainly this month's standout entry. Really beautiful work! I love the NMM for the technical skill, the sparkles in the helmet for the artistry, the fade on the ethereal cloak from red through purple to green for how gorgeous it is. One of the finest pieces we've ever seen in these challenges.

Tikay Fortooun - Colourful, characterful, and gory. He looks really annoyed that he's put his hand in something.

lipsdapips - Clean, confident work as always. Sorry you are getting comments for sticking to your style, I feel responsible for that. It's a great style and you're good at it! There's nothing wrong with sticking with it.

Tyranid Horde - I like these. Good blending on the armour.

GulGog Tuftoof - I like the contrast with the brighter and darker areas of metallic.

Jadenim - That is a nice shade of blue. Nice neat work.

Maharg - Good job painting a quite big squad of these fiddly Mechanicus guys. I feel like I've said this before, but I like the blue spot colours.

AUGmaniac - Good atmospheric work on the genestealer cult guy. I think I missed it in the thread - what's the story with the Blackstone Fortress guys being painted by your partner?

Modock - So good. I love the subtle weathering, and the black to green blends are fantastic.

ShadowsAndDust - Good clean work. I like how you've made the sword a focal point.

DanceofSlaanesh - This is great. I love the cel shaded look.

Midget Gems - Another MG classic. I get the feeling whatever plans the warboss is laying out are not going to be executed competently. Nice work on the camo, by the way.

Feltmonkey - I dunno, I've lost my mojo a bit really. I can't remember the last thing I painted that I was really satisfied with.

SmallChanges - Very cool. He looks intimidating as hell, and the hazard stripes are great.

Ezki - Really great colours. The shading and highlighting on the red is great, as is the fade on the whip. Excellent stuff.

Bellerophron - Very clean, decent use of black lining to make the armour panels stand out. Nice work on the sword.

Stormatious - That is a very bright chair, and a rather nice great unclean one too. The pinkish/green skin tones are my favorite part. They're very nicely done.

dukeofbeer - Really neat and clean. The checkerboard pattern on the axe is excellent.

Chris56 - Lovely blending and highlighting. The colours might have gone a bit too pastel for my own personal taste - you lose a bit of contrast on the overall model. Those gems are stunning though.

Paradigm - Really nice. Theoden looks stoic and windswept. The red really stands out, and I like the subtle variations of tone on the mail armour.

Peregrine - Nice atmospheric work. The addition of the dog really adds to the WW1 feel.

Great work all round, guys. Sorry the comments are a bit short. I'm quite short on time at the moment as I'm being forced by my son to make him all manner of papercraft. Maybe I should post some of that!

I better go root through my pile of shame to find something to paint for this month.

Flinty - The Blackstone Fortress models are great, aren't they? I like how you've broken up the earthy colours with some brighter spot colours. Is there a red team and a blue team?

The BSF models.are immense, and it's very convenient that the monthly painting comp has allowed me to grind through them so quickly

Thanks for the kind words.

Red team is on the table just now for this month's comp. Blue team will follow.in due course

@Queen_anns_revenge:
The paint job on the Horus Model is clean, but what really wraps the entry up is the quality work on the scenic base.

@lipsdapips

So fresh and so clean. Great poses. It soothes my soul to see such a clean paint job.

ZergSmasher wrote:Nevelon: I love the new Calgar model, and you did some solid work on both him and his Victrix Guard. I think a few edge highlights might help break up all that solid blue and make them really pop.

I do edge highlight, but just one level, and not a high contrast. One of these days I might try to bump it up a notch, but I’m not planning on it anytime soon. The issue is that half my army has no highlighting. I don’t want to go back and re-do them all, and I want the new guys to fit in. So I just do a more subtle job. It’s a compromise, but helps the army keep looking cohesive. Some day I might do a random HQ with a popping highlight, just because he needs to fit in less.

feltmonkey wrote:Nevelon - Always first out the gate, usually Ultramarines, always more than one miniature. That display case of Ultramarines is going to need another wing built onto it soon at this rate!

It was touch and go last January when I merged the year-to-date shelf into the normal space. The Deathwatch, which were sharing space, got booted over to the spare shelf (with my Eldar and Undead). Unless I buy a lot more stuff, I should be fine for this year. Probably. OK, maybe; I’d not put money on it though. I might have to exile some 2nd ed bolter huggers and unneeded extra sergeants to live in a case, or find an unused shelf/box.

Or find a spot for my stemware/barware. Right now the top shelf is full of glass. So I could potentially get significantly more room.

I reckon if i did the base properly that would have made a huge difference in my votes, oh well next time....

But to be fair, i had no idea my GUO would look like this when i started, didn't have the slightest idea it would turn out how it did, it was more of an experiment of me trying to do things on my own sort of a thing. Also i wanted to leave it how it looked earlier in my progress on it, but i keeped trying to fix mistakes, and those mistakes i tried to fix is what made it look how it does now lol.

Any way im proud of the votes i have gotten for it thus far any way and thank you all very much for all your help and kindness you have given since i started this hobby last year.

Thank you all, and congratulations everyone, and extra congratulations for Queen / DV8 / lipsdapips.

Beautiful painted models are a joy to see. Thanks to all that contributed the "Eye Candy". I voted for five entries but I thought hard about voting for a lot more. You all make me want to try one of these competitions sometime but I paint units for armies and quantity tends to outweigh quality by a solid margin.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

How did I miss that nagash! Saw comments and thought I don't recall seeing nagash. So scrolled through again. Wow. Amazing work.
Wish I could append my vote.

Thanks to the folks who have given me feedback! The little comments, even sitting in the bottom percentiles, really make the effort worthwhile!

I think I voted this month for more entries that I have any other month. The standard in April is really bonkers, but a personal favourite is QAR's Horus. Loved the sculpt to begin with but this is another level. That marble staircase. DV8, no surprises but that Nagash. To paint so consistantly and beautiful across such a large model takes it that extra step beyond the average. DanceofSlaanesh, I also wanted to just say that I love the cartoon-panel style you've gone for, its really awesome and made me seriously consider a Stormcast squad just to steal your scheme.

My votes this month: Queen Annes Revenge, DV8, lipsdapips, Modock, DanceofSlaanesh, Midgetems, Feltmonkey, SmallChanges, Bellerophron, Stormatious, Chris56, Paradigm, Peregrine

Some really great entries this month and my votes went to DV8, QAR, Modock, Chris56 and DanceofSlaanesh, all amazing entries really. I try to limit myself to five a month so these were really hard decisions!

Thank you feltmonkey and ZergSmasher for your kind comments! I'm a little disappointed in my own entry as maybe I could have picked something better or been more active during the month with updates but nonetheless great entries from all and I'm proud to be part of this.

Cheers Para once again!

Thanks for the votes, the photos aren't the best this time even for a single model I used my phone but it should have come out better.

It was fun to paint and a pain, poor old capin fell sword first on the desk and chipped while I was rummaging for paint so I guess the citadel paint handle isn't well balanced.

Also would like to note that this is the first time I have used gold in 20 years so had no idea how to layer it so I still despise it as a colour especially on ultramarimes.

Gold is basically a metallic yellow, and like it's brethren, is notorious for not having great coverage. You really need to dilute your paint and work your layers to get a great gold coverage that's smooth. Unfortunately that's just the nature of the paint.

Rather than jump straight to a bright gold, I'd always recommend working your way through some of the darker bronzes. I have also noticed that GW's gold paints tend to get worse over time; whether that's a result of their specific paint mix or the paint pot (or combination), I'm not sure. But I would highly recommend switching to Scale75 or Vallejo. Their metallic paints are miles and above GW's IMO (to be fair, I think their entire paint ranges surpass GW).

Ahh that makes it simpler, treat it like a yellow

I only have one gold and 3 different silvers, but also no other models with artificer armour so shouldn't need it any more (“Thats what he thinks”)

Great stuff this month! I voted for several, but my definite favorite is Midget Gems- awesome job leaning into the theme! Super great and characterful and very well executed.
Several other paintjobs (DV8, Paradigm, lipsdapips, Chris56, etc. ) all stood out, but that great little diorama takes the cake for me.

Thanks for the comments and/or Votes Felt, Deadshot and Duke of Beer. It was a fun idea to put together so glad you liked it.

Nevelon: Your work on the Ultras is always to a good consistent standard, I found your size comparison on the WIP thread interesting. (awesome pic of your display cabinet as well )

Rybrook: Love the old skool model but photos are a bit hard to see >_<

Deadshot: Quite the selection of characters there with lots of detail on, well done for getting them all done in time, I like how the Sanguinary Guards Axe came out.

Flinty: Another nice load of Blackstone models from you, The close up really shows the nice rusty metal you have managed to create.

DrGiggles: You have painted a nice tone to the skin and got some good bloody skulls in there

ZergSmasher: The metal has a good tarnished effect to it, would have loved to see you do more effects/detailing on the wings.

queen_annes_revenge: Really wonderful painting Quuen Ann, I could spend several paras describing it but I'll just focus on my fav bit, the face, you always manage to get such life into such a small feature, the sucken eyes give him a really haunted look.

Vejut: Love the model and a nice selection of colours, got a vote from me

Captain Brown: Wow thats a big gun, nice work on the gems.

JamesY: I like you have added some extra detail in on the base and given the armour some colour transition.

DV8: A really superb entry and so much to say about it. The smoothness of the painting and the armour shine are my 2 favourite parts.

Tikay Fortooun: Very cool blood effect and really like the model.

lipsdapips:Really great painting job as always and you have got a great tone to the white which can be really hard to get right, congrats.

Tyranid Horde: Nice transition between the red and orange, the armour really looks very good.

GulGog Tuftoof: Nice to see an entry from you again GulGog, the gold/bronze looks nice.

Jadenim: They come to gether very well as a squad, the blue has a really interesting tone to it.

Maharg: Lovely red colour and gritty metal

AUGmaniac: Those guys look very scary, well done to you both for getting entries in and hope your are enjoying the hobby together, very nice to see

Modock: Very cool Green/black transition and always love your leather work

ShadowsAndDust: Nicely poseed model and can see you have tried some blending/layering on the sword, well done.

DanceofSlaanesh: Love the comic look of this entry, not seen anything like it before.

Midget Gems: Fun little scene, missed a few bits and the grot could be painted a lot better.

feltmonkey: Cool models with lots of extra details on the base, well done Felt

SmallChanges: The Metal armour looks good and like you have tied it into the base with dirt on the feet.

Ezki: An interesting combination of bits that works quite well. you have definitely achieved what you set out to do in the thread.

Bellerophon: The wings and sword are my fav bits, the blue shading works really well.

Stormatious: That model never fails to repulse me when painted well and its making me feel ill right now. Well done for getting such a big model done, your being too hard on yourself for the base, it looks fine but if your that worried about it just something to improve on next time

dukeofbeer: Really like that model and after I painted it myself you really appreciate all the little details on it. Looks like some nice painting and highlighting with the yellow but its really hard to see, bigger pics please.

Chris56: Very cool pastel colours on your entry chris, for some reason the head looks massive. If I remember correctly you did that in a night or 2? if so even more impressive.

Paradigm: The way you have painted the red is great and really looks good as a bold colour on the model

Peregrine: You have the officers clothing really dirty and just as it should be for the Kreig, nicely done
