Giving this its own thread so the Adeptus Titanicus thread can remain focused on giant robots.

The last thing we heard in the preview seminar was a cryptic hint to look to the skies…

Chocks away! Aeronautica Imperialis is BACK.

Who knows?

Probably on the same small scale as the previous edition, but hopefully with plastic aircraft this time around and (imho) retooled rules to make it faster in pacing.

I'm kinda hoping this ends up being an expansion for Titanicus as I've seen a few other people mention. I have absolutely zero interest in standalone aeronautica, but if it's big flyers vs big titans it'd be nifty.

With any luck, they’ll be lots of crossover. Icarus autocannons and Hyperios missiles on the knights not to mention the Warmonger Titan has those anti air batteries.

Also, ground defences were a feature...

Finally, they already have the Xiphon in AT scale as a crashed one appears on the Fw terrain boards

Looking forward to this, hope they make a decent job of it. I am the opposite though and hope its just aircraft (and ground installations) and not tying in with the AT stuff though models compatible with that game would be preferable.

Well, an air strike on a titan would make a good mission. Though, if it’s. warbringer, it could be tricky...

Oh undoubtedly and the narrative missions that could be done are endless and should be great fun. I just worry that if they try and do to much with the rules then they just wont make them very good. A dogfighting only game has sufficient breadth but is not too much that the rules cant be tight and I very much have the fear that if GW try and make this game tying into AT that it will water down the concept with little trade off. So I just hope they keep it as purely about airpower as possible.

I look forward to imperial vs imperial air combat, because GW really wishes they could squat all Xenos at this point.

AI did have Tau & Eldar though didn't it?

Hopefully it isn't Heresy era like AT if it is indeed the same scale.

One bonus of AT is that they can start in the Horus Heresy era and advance it through the history of 40K all the way to modern times and they don't have to change the models for the Imperial faction one bit.

So Aeronautica can be fully in the modern era and yet support a future epic style release that combines it with AT. It also means AT can advance to the Siege of Terra where Eldar start to appear with their own Titans; they can add in orks and tyranids and others and heck FW has even given Tau at least one titan scale model so they can jump all the way to modern times and give most factions a titan.

I very much hope they don't touch the rules at all, they were fantastic and the pacing was fine once folk learn them and making decisions becomes more a "feel" thing than a "sit here for ten minutes debating with myself" thing.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

The previous game included rules for ground-to-air missions. As does Wings of Glory, which is very similar in some respects, and the game doesn't slow down. My preference wouldn't be for the two games to be "integrated"; simply use models from Adeptus Titanicus in Aeronautica Imperialis as ground targets, and include rules for air strikes in Adeptus Titanicus using stratagems or something similar, like how Epic Armageddon included aircraft. That way both games keep their respective focus without getting too muddled.

Regardless of whether AI and AT are integrated on launch rules-wise, I would certainly hope that they are in the same model scale.

Given that Aeronautica Imperialis was announced at the Adeptus Titanicus seminar, I'm not sure why anyone would think otherwise.

Hopefully the starter box isn't too expensive, they were fairly cheap in the past afaik.

Now this is something that has me interested again. I really miss playing AI, easily one of the best games that GW ever made.

I hope they don't alter too much, the only thing I could hope for is more races. From what I remember the game had Imperial, Chaos, Orks, Eldar, and Tau.

Keep the game as a flight game, no need to add it into Titanicus.

Anyway, it is good to see it returning,

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Aeronautica Imperialis starter boxes? Don't remember any of those.

The rulebook was £35, the expansion £26. Fighters were £10 or £12 for two planes. To play the first scenario in the rulebook (three Nightwings against four Thunderbolts) would cost you £83 for eight miniatures and a rulebook in 2007.

On release, the AI rules and four planes would cost you £55, roughly similar to what the Wings of Glory WW2 starter would cost now, or the X-Wing starter plus one ship pack.

If this new one is set in the Heresy, it'll be Marine and Imperial navy/army planes only, I'd think. Probably focussed on Forge World's models rather than the Citadel ones. Thunderbolts and Xiphon Interceptors in a core game (if there is a box, that is), perhaps?

I really hope it isn't set in the HH era... I know Forge World are set in that era as it is their bread & butter, but it really limits the game I feel.

AI and BFG are my kryptonite. I'll pay ridiculous prices for space vehicles. I'm almost certainly going to buy some fighters, at least Imperial and Eldar.

You know, unless the prices are beyond ridiculous.

I never played the original, and since then we’ve had X-Wing come along.

Hmm wait a sec who remembers the old squat video - with the squat clock - and the plastic sisters clock - and the plastic thunderhawk!

Could this be the moment that we finally - after many years - get a proper plastic thunderhawk!

That's possible, but it would be quite a bit smaller than people have been hoping for.

I would much, much rather see a plastic Thunderhawk in AT scale than in 40k scale. Would definitely see more table use.

Not to derail the thread, but every time I see another specialist release I wonder why it’s not battlefleet gothic...especially with this one. I wasn’t even really aware this game even existed the first time around. Battlefleet Gothic on the other hand is still played and even has a recently released video game version.
Maybe it’s in the best interests of my wallet, though.

I'm surprised as well, esp as BFG has a much bigger following; however with AT doing really well then it stands to reason that GW might well branch out and try other similar scale games alongside it. If Aeronautica doesn't catch peoples interest enough then GW knows that the big pull of AT is purely the titans and can focus around that. However if Aeronautica really takes off well then GW can put that into the pot and it all adds toward them potentially considering investment in other similar scale games - like a return of Epic and perhaps even Warmaster.

With all their specialist games GW has taken the same path of a cautious release pattern with each stage being separate and distinct. Just look at Necromunda where they released each new gang with a new book, expanding on the game at each level and yet able to pull out at any point and the game would be "complete and functional". It gives them a lot of flexibility with releases and means they can pull out without leaving loads on the table unfinished.

AT was the very same in how they've trickled out titans rather than launching with 5 or 10 on launch day. Furthermore how they focused on the HH era and purely the Imperial Titans - again lowering the investment and lowering the risk if it didn't work. Yet it seems AT is doing really well and if they keep going I'm sure that we'll see Chaos titans and Xenos!

Somebody mentioned that BFG is in the works but is a couple of years away. Hopefully it will have Xenos Fleets in it from the start.

Yep. It actually deals with something completely different than other 40K universe games. Both AT and AI are basically just 40K vehicles in a different scale.
