Hi guys, I'm new to DD and a returning gamer and long time writer. I had a question for people about the best way to blog a project - what sites to use, how to organise, whether it can all be done in a forum like DD, that kind of thing.

I recently started going through all my old boxes of 40k stuff with a view to selling them on ebay and I came across my classic Necromunda - one thing followed another and I got bitten by the bug again. Now I'm building up all my gangs with a view to gaming them with an overarching narrative that I'll turn into a novel. In terms of style, it'll hopefully be a mix of GoT and the classic 70s movie Warriors - obviously within the Necromunda setting and universe. So, lots of political maneouvring between gangs and houses (I'm hoping to have all the factions represented, including nobles and enforcers, so spyrers and arbites will also make an appearance), punctuated by gang fights, with an ultimate goal in mind. At the moment, I'm calling the project "Necromunda: Uprising".

What do people suggest would be the best place to host a blog? And would there be any interest in the project on here?

Thanks for reading

I am not sure where the best place to host that blog would be, but I would love to read it when you do start. Some of my absolute favorite blogs here on Dakkadakka have that wonderful combination of narrative, gaming, and awesome modelling and painting. I really hope you get it up and running soon!

Thanks for your reply, facelyss. Maybe I'll just host it here for now, then. I'm currently painting up the first gang, Orlocks, kind of using them as practice to get better before tackling some of the more visually complicated gangs later - particularly Escher, who are going to have a lot of focus in the story. Here are some pics of the gang so far (apologies for the quality, I don't seem to be able to get my phone to take pics that aren't slightly washed out, colour-wise). I haven't picked up a paint brush in probably 15 years, so I've got a lot of improving to do!

A couple in there to finish basing, then 7 more Orlocks to finish off before I move on to (probably) Cawdor, as that's who my mate wants to play most.

And here's a pdf of the introduction to the story. Not much scene setting just yet, though.

Thanks! I wanted them to look like they didn't get much sun. Because, well, y'know, underhive...

Hi all, small update, work's jumped up on me, but here's the last of the Orlock heavies painted up. Say hello to One-eyed Jack. Just got a couple of things to finish on him, paint the edge of the base, fix up one or two spots and put some edge highlighting on the black parts.

I think I'm going to name the Orlock gang the Tunnel Rats - so I really hope I roll up some tunnels on their territory rolls! I'm planning for the juves to get most of the focus in the story when it comes to writing their parts.

I've also enlisted the help of a really excellent base painter to help out with painting bases for other models (paid, of course). He's agreed to put together some bespoke bases for me for certain gangs and he's already painting up some with spray paint effects for my Escher gang. If anyone else is interested in his bases, he sells them on Ebay and other places: https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/demonpet https://www.facebook.com/DpBasesandScenery/

I've already purchased some of his toxic necromunda bases for a genestealer cult brotherhood and can confirm they look awesome! I'll post pics of the Escher bases as soon as they're done.

So I've only got five Orlock gangers and one leader left to paint (all at various stages) then I can move on to the next gang. At the moment, I'm thinking that'll be Cawdor to give me more room for improvement before I tackle Escher. I've also just managed to secure the last Cawdor model I didn't have - the leader with sword and boltgun.

Scotland, but nowhere near my rulebook

Very, very nice. I've gone over to Newcromunda, but original flavour will always be a classic game.

Thanks very much for the nice comment. I may well go over to newcromunda myself eventually, but for now we'll see where this goes. To be honest, while I like that the gangs are more individual now, I kinda think they've become a bit too individual. Like before you could see them intermingling, but now they seem so separated from each other as to never come into contact except on a battlefield. It takes away from the idea of a functioning (if barely) society for me. Before, any gang member would use whatever tools or weapons they could find, never mind if they belonged to a rival gang, and underneath the distinct clothing they were all humans in similar situations, just with differing outlooks. Now, Delaque look like they're vampire aliens, Goliath look like small headed orks, Cawdor look like they come from some kind of isolated medieval world, even Van Sarr look like they've been beamed up and experimented on by Eldar or Dark Eldar one too many times...

A lot of the models do look cool, though. The only gang I don't particularly like the new look of is Escher, and that's mainly to do with the strange, impractical hairstyles and the focus on chemical weapons.

Necromunda '95 was a little anomalous in that regard; the background as presented there implied that the gangs were living outside the Houses' control of Hive City by emigrating to the Underhive. Both 1990's confrontation and Necromunda '17 cast the House gangs as still active members of their Houses.

I suppose the Venator gang rules would work for a mixed crew living out in the underhive, but the Venator rules for income don't seem appropriate; that'd require some minor house-rules, I think.

(The new Escher hairstyles aren't any more ridiculous than the original ones, I'd say)

That's fair enough, though I wasn't really talking about mixed gangs. It was more that, underneath it all, the gangs from classic still looked commonly human, whereas the gangs now - particularly delaque and van sarr - look completely unrelated to any other gangs. As does their equipment. I mean, a laspistol or an autogun is made in a manufactorum stamped out from a template, they're ten a penny and they all look similar if not the same due to their cheap production values and how ubiquitous they are. I guess what it boils down to is I'm just struggling to see any commonality between the new gangs.

As for Escher hair, maybe I just prefer the 80s punk stylings to the 2000s emo stylings...

The explanation nowadays is that the basics - the power packs, lasing chambers, etc of a lasgun - are the same from all the Houses (after all, they churn them out in a standard pattern for the guard by the billion), but that each house has a preference for their own furniture, such as the duelling grips and long barrels on Eldar laspistols, or the chunkier casings with modular equipment for the Van Saar.

As for the different look, these Houses have been on Necromunda for over ten thousand years. I wouldn't be surprised if the population of a single House in hive Primus alone exceeds the total population of Earth today, so given the environmental pressures, the length of time the planet has been populated and the numbers involved, a degree of variety and even nascent speciation wouldn't be too unusual. That's before you take deliberate eugenic and genetic engineering projects into account.

YMMV. I like the new styles because it adds to the feel of the setting - everything is so inimcal to what we think is a "normal" existence - but I can see the appeal of the old, too. Old Necromunda was a sci-fi western, new Necromunda is more survival horror.

Yep, and to be fair, I'm not saying I dislike the new look, I just prefer the old.

Although the old was definitely survival horror as well as western sci-fi - I mean, what's the life expectency of your average ganger? Especially if they've been outlawed and they have sump zombies to deal with on a day to day basis?

Another quick update: two more Orlocks virtually finished. Just some highlights to do and then put them on bases. The final four Orlocks are shaded and will hopefully be finished by the end of the weekend, so that'll be the first gang completed!

It looks like the next gang will be Cawdor, so more blues and blacks incoming, only this time with the addition of some browns! Yay!

(Looking forward to having the confidence to tackle the more colourful Escher models...)

Oh, also, I've started work on faction which may or may not feature as a full fledged gang in terms of gaming/story, but which will have its part to play eventually: Enforcers. In fact, I've picked up a cool model from Artel W (https://artelw.com/) who'll be a special character in the story as part of this faction, but also as a POV character in her own right. I don't have a name for her yet. Any suggestions? She'll primarily be an 'investigator'...
