I haven't played in a very long time (probably at least a couple of editions). Are lots of dreadnoughts a decent list (not looking at winning tournaments, but also not looking to get wiped out in every match). I've seen some battle reports and Dreadnoughts (especially the Redemptor) seem to do very well. I tried to even out on weapons between anti-troop and anti-armor. I only own two redemptors, 1 venerable and one regular dreadnought so far. Before I go crazy and buy more, I wanted to see if this is just a bad idea or if it just needs tweeking.

For one thing a battalion can only have 3 elites/ fast atk/ heavy.
And a Vanguard can have up to 6

You can only run 3x each unit (except troops). So you'd have to drop one redemptor and one venerable dread.
If you're looking for a simple swap you could add in a single knight. That way you are tayloring your list to only be vulnerable to one type of weapon profile (high str anti armour).
A gallant is cheap a crusader could sit at tye back and blast away. Either that or a repulsor or two.

The rule book says that a battalion detachment can have 0-6 elites. Automatically Appended Next Post: small_gods wrote: You can only run 3x each unit (except troops). So you'd have to drop one redemptor and one venerable dread.

I’ve been scouring the rulebook for this restriction. Do you know what page it is on?

Is this online somewhere? I don’t see it in the rulebook.

They do yearly rules updates here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/faqs/
It came in after people were playing 9 winged hive tyrants or 15 culexus assassins in certain lists. It's a bit heavy handed but makes sense to stop lists that aim to break the game.

Ok, fixed the list so it doesn't have more than 3 each.
How about the list now? Still a total of 10 dreadnoughts.

Depends how much of an emphasis you place on winning in order to have fun. It wont lose to everything, especially other "fluffy" lists. That being said typically in the current meta there are alot of knights, resulting in two things that pose a problem for your list. The first being that you obviously face lots of knights which are very good at killing vehicles and dreadnoughts (and resisting them with a 3++ save vs shooting), and second lots of lists which are prepared to kill knights which are also very good at killing dreadnoughts. More than anything, any vehicle without an invulnerable save just gets wiped off the board very quickly for the above reasons, making dreadnoughts very vulnerable currently.
Can you have fun? Sure! Though depending on how serious your friends are your win rate imo would be around < 30% or so. If you've been wanting to paint up more dreads or have always loved them in the lore id do it anyways, building and buying what you love is more rewarding than buying what wins currently in the ever-changing meta.

I don't think it's that bad at all. It'll not win LVOs but it will be difficult for your friends to play against.
I would consider a second battalion if you wanted to make it more competitive. Troops and more bodies will make playing the objectives easier. Plus more CP is always welcome.

This list will either kill easily, or be killed easily. Most AM/IG armies will love to shoot this off the board. Most horde armies will easily control all the objectives, as well. however, anyone not running enough AA firepower, is basically screwed.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, dreads look so cool that who cares about any shortcomings. my only real question, is where are the relic leviathan dreads!?!?!

it's not a very competative list I'm afraid. Most vehicles without either a ton of wounds (leman russ) or some form of wound reduction (eldar wave serpents) a -1 to hit (like most flyers) or an invul save are screwed. It would look awesome, that's a form of winning to I supose.

I was looking at the Leviathon Dred on FW with their deal in June - how does it compare to the Redemptor? I'd rather not spend $120 + on the book and one dread to find out that the Redemptor can do the same for less.
