I managed to trade for the following warmachine army (note that I've got all 3 books):

Old Witch of Khador and Scrapjack
Vladimir, Dark Champion (Epic)
Irusk
<!--[endif]-->

Man Hunter
Grey Lords (3)
Iron fangs (1 Kaptain, 1 Standard, 1 leader and 5 troopers)
Widowmakers (1 leader and 3 troopers)

Winter Guard mortar

2 Man-O-War Shocktroopers
Destroyer
Kodiak

What kind of list can I put together?  Can you guys suggest my next purchases, if any, needed to make this list competitive?

I've obviously got to buy more shocktroopers to make a legal unit, and I plan on buying the Khador sniper character from the IK:RPG to bring the widowmakers unit up to 5.  I'd like to trade off the mortar since I think the winter guard models look like crap AND I hate the idea of just one heavy weapon from a whole unit sitting in an army.  I'll never buy the Behemoth since it looks like a pile of crap, so no need to suggest that purchase

Get another mortar. As long as Grundun isn't on the table, they do pretty good. Old witch isn't a bad caster although in 750 and less, Sorcha(non epic) would be a better choice with her feat. The behemoth is a beat stick.

All problems can be solved with proper use of a high powered rifle and a water tower

The widowmaker squad does not get any larger than 4 models.

Vlad can be perfectly serviceable as a primary caster; though Sorcha is the 'powerhouse' caster in the Khador army for building assassination lists. Don't count on assassinating Hordes casters though; as 3 points of fury can mean you've popped your feat to kill the caster and watch all the damage dealt transferred to warbeasts. Get the standard Vlad or Sorcha models (or if your opponent alllows, simply use the much NICER Epic Vlad model as regular Vlad).

My absolute advice; get a second destroyer. Best jack in the army; possibly in the game when you discount bonejacks. Also, get a Kovnik. Khador casters are focus hungry and being able to Marshall two jacks is a big deal.

My usual Khador army looks like this....

Vlad
Destroyer
Destroyer
Kovnik

Widowmakers
Mortar Crew
Iron Fang Pikeman (min)

Vlad, the Kovnik and Destoyers benefit from Wind Wall during the advance and slowly pound the enemy with bombards. The Widowmakers and Mortar do the same with their own shooting. Consider them expendable. The pikeman remain behind your main battle line out of range of shooting and ready to countercharge with blasting pikes for the KD.

I'm relatively new to Warmachine, and my army of choice is Cryx. However, based on a beat-down I participated in recently, I would advise keeping the mortar & getting another. If you really don't like the models, try to find something to proxy for them.

Most ranged attacks in the game are pretty short. A 20" range and a nice AOE make mortars very useful.

"I'm going to shoot your Stalker."
"Ok. You are more than 5" away. You automatically miss- I love stealth! Roll for deviation. Oh, lucky shot."
"I'm going to shoot your Stalker with my other mortar now."
"Erk!"

Template weapons are wonderful at hitting models with stealth.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Get a Man-o-War Kovnik next, one of the better solos in the game. With him, you could make the following list:

Vladimir
Destroyer
Kodiak
Kovnik
6 Iron Fang Pikemen with Officer and Standard
Widowmakers

500 even, should be competitive.

Have the Kovnik marshal either of the Jacks, try it both ways and see which way you prefer. Vladimir is an exceptional fighter, and should be casting Blood of Kings almost every round. Signs and Portents is the other one, though he's better off holding onto his focus if he's in danger.

Like keezus mentioned, there are a bunch of units that come in only 1 size, Widowmakers are one of those, Greylords are another. Men-o-war are decent, but they're pretty slow, and will be left behind by Vladimir and the jacks when he uses his feat. The Pikemen can keep up with them better.

Irusk is a good caster, but he tends to be more of a lead from the rear kind of guy, and is more of an infantry 'caster. He's a good one to try out once you've gotten a good understanding of the game. I have little experience with the Old Witch.

As for other future purchases in addition to the Kovnik (or 2), you'll probably want to get Sorscha, maybe a Devastator, 4 more Iron Fangs, and some Merc solos: Eiryss, Gorman di Wulfe, and the Ogrun Bokur.

Warpriest has good advice.

First off though - start at 300-350 point games, caster and Jacks only. There is a lot going on in Warmachine and you will probably get quickly overwhelmed. Learn how to move your stuff - individual models block movement and it's very easy to block a warjack's advance with some badly placed infantry. Once you have the three fiddy point game down move up to five hundy and add some infantry and solos.

You've got a good starting selection of units. Widowmakers are excellent, so are the Iron Fangs.

I'd get a few more Warjacks to play with. A juggernaut or two can't hurt - yeah with just that one axe it looks like a chump compared to the fancy Destroyer but honestly it's a better Warjack overall. Also get yourself a few solos - the Manhunter is a good one, and you probably will want to have an Eiryss - she's a real tramp; present in a lot of the lists out there for a very good reason - she can wreck a warcaster's day. You'll want to have an Eiryss if for no other reason than to kill your opponent's Eiryss.

Sorscha's not a bad caster to play but honestly she's pretty damned cheap - the whole icy rush thing is one of the few truly cheap things in the game; there's not a lot you can do to beat it other than hope you can intimidate your opponent into popping the feat early. You'll win lots of games with Sorscha, but you won't make lots of friends.

Yeah, definitely play some smaller "Mangled Metal" games. Vladimir, the Destroyer and the Kodiak add up to 319.

You may as well pick up a boxed set, Juggies are nice, though they don't get much respect anymore, and a second Destroyer is never a bad thing. And you end up with Sorscha for free.

I was actually thinking about picking up the starter box, so looks like a smart buy

Now I just need to find someone to play with in Charlottetown, PEI. I don't have other models, so unlike every other wargame I play I can't supply the other person's army :p

Da Southern New Hampshire!

Old Witch FTW! She's tricky to play, she's not very straightfoward so you gotta pull strings before you untie the knot.
Im so used to not using the arc-node I hardly use it at all!

Grey-lords + Old Witch, always. They can cast blizzard on her to give her stealth. They can also ice-cage stuff to give them -def or actually stationaryize something.

Iron Fangs seem to be a great troop choice, Ive yet to pick some up though, they also work well with the witch because of the witch's Weald Secrets or Iron Flesh buffs.

You've pretty much got the best jacks right there, Kodiak and Destroyer.
Behemoth = no no, if the enemy plays it right its relatively easy to slaughter, its only like 1 armor more with 2 more damage boxes, oh noes.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail.

Boxed set is a good next buy: I use my Destroyer and Juggernaut a lot, and many Khador players insist that they're two of the best jacks (The Kodiak and Berserker being the others). Consider also getting Eiyriss. There's lots of ways to counter her nowadays, but she has great synergy with the Khador casters, especially Sorscha, but also Vlad and Irusk. You're also going to need another MOW to round out that squad (and you might as well get two, to make it an even 4). Though people are liking Demo corps more these days, They can be a good unit with IFP and as a good 'second jack', effectively (though be warned that they are slow compared to the IFP--who can charge across dif. terrain with the kaptain).

Irusk is a great 'caster, especially for infantry heavy lists (but not exclusively). Give him a single 'jack and let him cast 'inhospitable ground' and the upright 'jack spell all game long, then pop his feat when you're ready to go in for the kill with the IFP.

Greylords are a must, especially with Widowmakers and mortars (Ice Cage + ranged attack = sexy). I like the manhunter, but he's not going to win you games; he's there to bring down the wounded light 'jack with the arc node that's messing your guys up.

I tend to play a list that looks like this (note that it represents mostly what you have):
Irusk
Greylords
Mortar
Widowmakers
IFP (as listed above)
2 Jacks (Any combo of Juggy, Dest, and/or Kodiak)
Manhunter or Eyriss
MOW Kovnik (to marshal one of the jacks, whichever one doesn't need a lot of focus)

But you could replace Irusk with Sorscha in this list and still go pretty nuts.

Syr has good advice except for Eiryss + Sorscha. That's a combo you do not want to play if you like having friends.

Honestly? I think getting the Sorcha/Eyriss 'kill everything r0xx0r' move is a lot harder to get off than people make it out to be. I tried several times (I think I played Sorscha and Eyriss exclusively for about a half-dozen games) before I gave up and switched to Irusk, and I've been much happier since then...

Err... Harder than using Irusk? Irusk is a somewhat complex caster comparatively. Sorscha + Eiryss boils down to you're either going to get the enemy caster with Eiryss the feat turn, or the turn after. Either way, you've just about won at that point.

Anyway, Jeff is right. Keep Eiryss in the box until your group is ready to move up to a competative level of play. If you're in it for fun games, don't bother with her. If you're in it to win tournaments, you better figure out how to beat her at the very least, if not learn to use her yourself. She shows up in quite a few tourney lists.
