Hey guys,

I did a small redesign on the Games Workshop Logo and would like to hear your thoughts on this endeavour.
As I tested the waters on reddit earlier, I know that a redesign is a topic that most people don't want.

Nevertheless I identified a few problems on the current logo and would love to discuss those.

I have a full story of the process and the thinking on my blog, but due to limitations I can't post this as a first time user. :-)
To get this started: Do you like the highlighted or flat version better?

The current GW logo basically screams 90s and a redesign isn't too far fetched, here are my thoughts:

Definetely a flat version.
I like the "GA" and would keep this, as it looks very promising.
I don't like your "M" and "W", far too heavily stylised.
The "K" is far too prominent, look at your version and the original image and you can see why they made the decision to push the letters together and let them overlap.

I know you kept the original colours, but if you want to do a redesign, you want to port the logo into the current time and not stay with neon colours and double borders. Look up the "Warhammer" store logos. They did this to a lot of stores, because it doesn't say "toys and 90s" anymore and fits better with a more mature audience (which has the money to buy their product).

Well, you are absolutely right. I was thinking to make a redesign that looks "as much as the old as I can". Technically this is more of a revision that an overhaul. I would totally go for a Black and White logo, if GW decides to be more mature. But I think strategically it would be wise to stay toyish, as the trademark is really really strong.

All signs point to the old yellow/red logo getting retired this year.

The stores are all rebranding to "Warhammer" now.

They unveiled that new "Winged Hammer" logo recently (last month?) as a unified "warhammer" logo that combined AoS and 40k.

There's *something* related to this logo teased on the back page of the warhammer fest program - whatever it is happens at the end of June.

It will probably float around for a little while still on older books and packaging obviously, but I think its time is up as a store logo.

It's a shame as It's been the same for 30 years and the colour combo made it really easy to spot a GW in an unfamiliar location. which this redesign would retain, but time moves on.

Actually, this is great news. As a new player I could not cope with the old one. Thats why I started this.

Yeah I can see for a new player why it would look garish but as an old hand it feels like a friendly reminder of my youth.

I think, Like "Citadel", it might stick around as a sub-brand for the company itself, maybe the design studio, but as the primary public-facing brand it's on the way out.

"Games Workshop" will remain as the official company name, and the group name ("Black Library, part of the Games Workshop group" or something similar).

I'm surprised "Citadel" is remaining as a brand, actually.

Not keen, it looks like you're going for an 80's Heavy Metal style. The A & M being merged also has a visual effect of making it into viking rune which might be ok if you're pushing a purely fantasy game but it looks very dated and divorced from the sci-fi 40k element which is more than half of the company's IP. The rune could also be viewed as having white supremacist connotations, Northgard has had some debate on their servers about runic symbols being misinterpreted by idiots online, it doesn't matter if those idiots are wrong most companies want to avoid any added controversy.

What rune?

They've just resdesigned it though, to the new Warhammer Logo.

All stores have rebranded. May not be long until the company formally renames itself (I think they're allowed to do that when a plc? Honestly do not know, myself)

To be honest, I prefer the original.

However, as others have mentioned, rebranding is happening anyway, so a "tweak" of the yellow and red logo is, I'm afraid, irrelevant. if you have enjoyed the exercise, all well and good.

I also prefer the original, to be honest. The reason for doing it is very simple though, I just enjoy minimalism, the vision on the world from this perspective is making me happy. You have no idea how happy I was to go from that old skeuomorphism design on iOS 6 to the new one in iOS 7.
