Hello all! Hope all your days are goin great!

So I'm still fairly new to 40k and looking to build a big mean Blood Angel Army and homebrew it as a successor chapter mainly for fluff and such.

One question that has got me rather confused and it's likely just my lack of understanding that is the reason. But do I need to follow company patterns even as a successor or may I make my own?

And IF I need to follow the BA company patterns, could someone explain a basic explanation of how the company system works because I dont really get it. I do understand specific units need to be in specific companies but thats about it.

I'd like to know so I dont mess up my transfers.

Thanks everyone!

Alright nice quick n easy answer haha.

Even though I wanna make a successor chapter I wanna stay as lore friendly as possible and not go toooooo overboard. So I wasnt sure if I would need to keep the markings.

In a way its easier but the only problem is now I have another system I have to create hahaha.

If you make your own Chapter, you can (and are encouraged to) do what you like. Do a Blood Angels Successor chapter that uses Ultramarines-style shoulder trim colours to denote companies if you like. Or company colour and squad numeral on one knee, or whatever you want.

With the release of Primaris, this is a bit off now, but here is the old Chapter organization chart if this helps:

If you have the BA codex it should have the current force org breakdown.

A successor chapter doesn't need to follow the same marking style than the parent chapter, though it is common. But if you're making your own chapter, it might be a good idea to do some research about how other chapter do their markings, so you can see if there is a system you like better than the BA one. I personally prefer the Dark Angel style where the company is marked on the kneepad, and despise the Ultramarine style where the company is marked by the coloured shoulder trim.

It is also worth considering whether you want to keep the BA style of marking the squad types by the helmet colour and if you do, whether you want to vary the colours assigned to better go with your overall scheme.

Also note that there is no need for all your models to belong to the same company. It is common for the companies to be reinforced by units from other companies, especially from reserve companies. This might be a good way to introduce some variance to your paint scheme.

Thank you all for the feedback! Good to know I can create my own without much worry. I have a couple of ideas as to how to do it that make sense to me while also keeping in touch with the fluff.

Thanks again!

It's worth noting that whilst the BA mostly follow the Codex chapter/company organisation, not all Space Marines do, so they don't even need to have 10 companies or have those companies made of 10 squads of 10. Its unlikely you'll be ending up building and painting the entire chapter and the typical Astartes battle force may well include squads from different companies anyway. Of course, if you're enjoying planning out all the behind the scenes fluff, knock yourself out, but especially with a home brew chapter no-one should question anything like squad or company markings, as long as it's obvious which unit is which when they're playing against you.

Take a look at what I've been painting and modelling: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/725222.page

That was actually a bit of a follow up question I had on my mind cause I dont know really how this company system really works (I have seen pictures of an entire chapter so I guess I have some idea?) But I'm really glad you set that straight before I even asked. Thank you.

Also more of a blood angel lore question. Since my army fluff is going to mainly be focused around the death company.. How large of a DC is to large (if that is even a thing) I know the codex does mention that the Angels Encarmine DC are "worryingly large" but I dont know if there is any kind of limit that (at least lore wise) would not be allowed. Lets say.... 3 out of the 10 companies in my chapter were only death company for example.

The Flesh Tearers Chapter are mostly DC, so the sky is the limit.

You could say that your chapter has relatively few DC, but they see quite a bit of use, or that half of them are DC, or even most.

In universe, most factions would be worried about a chapter suffering a 30% berzerker issue, but there are chapters (Flesh Tearers above) who are much, much worse.

Blood-Drenched Death Company Marine

Before a battle the Chaplains assess each Marine in turn and take the ones you show signs of the Red Thirst and/or the Black Rage. They have their armor marked in some fashion according to their traditions to represent that marine is now part of the Death Company. If said marine surrives, then most chapters kill them. This duty is most commonly done by the Senior Chaplain and is part of Astrorath's back story.

A large Death Company is a sign the chapter is moving towards extinction. Having three companies of them would indicate this was the chapter's final battle.

That was actually a bit of a follow up question I had on my mind cause I dont know really how this company system really works (I have seen pictures of an entire chapter so I guess I have some idea?) But I'm really glad you set that straight before I even asked.

There are four companies that each get put in the front and do all the main work that a chapter does. The other six companies are there to add specialized helper units when the main four need them.

Those four main companies are 2, 3, 4, and 5 called battle companies. They’re a mostly complete package that can attack an objective, kill what’s on it, take it and secure it. Since they have a mixture of units working closely together they can dispatch enemies quickly and move on quickly.

The other six companies don’t have mixed unit types, each company has just one or very similar kinds of unit. As a result they are not good unless they’re working with a battle conpany, since if they’re being used in a situation that isn’t what they specialize in, they can be ineffective. For example, the company with all assault marines can do a raid on the enemy’s flank but they wouldn’t be able to stay there and hold it since they haven’t any ranged weapons or heavy weapons and they could be bogged down while the rest of the enemy goes around. They mostly get broken up and have a few squads attached to each of the main four battle companies. For this reason 6, 7, 8 and 9 are called reserves.

Tenth company supplies light armored scouts. Most people say that these are only junior marines who haven’t graduated to the heavy assault role of the rest of the chapter, but in I think the third edition Blood Angel book it says some blood angels go back to the scout company because they personally are suited to the savagery of ambushing and cutting enemies’ throats.

The first company loans out squads of veterans and terminators. It used to be that Blood Angel chapters were the only ones who used veteran jump pack squads and everyone else had veteran tactical squads, but it was easier for GW to let everyone have veteran jump squads and besides the shooting rules aren’t as cool as the combat rules so veterans with bolters didn’t do anything better than normal troops.
