Subject: FW shadowspecters - To Sub assembly paint or not to sub assembly paint. That is the question...
As per the title, I'm going to be placing an order for some Eldar shadow spectres from FW.
The guy at my local model store said he put some together for a client and they are a mother of a pain in the neck to build. There seems to be a lot of ribbons and such details.
I'm wondering if anyone has had experience in modelling and painting these?
Would it make more sense to paint these dudes in sub assembly?
In general - How do yous people normally paint your elite minis? I see some people that will always paint sub assembly in their blogs. Seems like the cool pro approach.

Leave the support arm attached to the model, but paint the other arm and gun by themselves. The same with the heads. If the ribbons are getting in the way then paint them seperately then glue them on, and paint any areas missed once the model's assembled. At least that's what folks seem to have done from the first few hits on Google.
Its really just the gun and some of the ribbons which would get in the way of painting. The ribbons I'd leave aside just because they're fiddly, but the overall models don't look like they'd be too intrusive to get a brush around that you'd have to paint everything individually.

Do you have trouble reaching places and are leaving blotches of unpainted stuff around the gun? Sub assembly.
You can reach most places without turning miniature around 26 times a second and whatever is unpainted is impossible to see without breaking miniature apart? Do not sub assembly.
So far only Eldar infantry I had to paint separately were Dark Reapers.

Really ? I had no problem with those at all.
Im a bit nervous as they are my first full resin models. (not counting failcast garbage...)

Looking at your gallery I'd say fully assemble then paint.
We're not talking Golden Demon standard, more like tabletop, and the spectres don't have an obvious two tone that could be split to speed painting.
Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!

You should wash everything, it improves adhesion. You can get away with not washing plastic, but it is still a good idea to give everything a soapy bath.

Washing plastic is a weird myth guys. Sometimes it's necessary for resin but on a non-defective modern plastic kit it makes no sense. Plastic injection molded kits manufactured at GW's scale should not have appreciable quantities of mold release agent unless something went seriously wrong.
Resin kits from large companies also shouldn't have mold release because they're usually pre-washed. If for some reason your resin parts weren't fully washed by the manufacturer, the residue would be obvious. You'd be able to see it and feel it, the lack of paint adhesion would be really noticeable, etc. You might run into this more often with independent casters or small businesses making low volume production garage kits but you shouldn't see it from GW, and if you did, it would be obvious.
