A Simple mission - Only War from the main rules book (pg 187) - consider using power levels to start rather than points (as he may not have chapter approved) or you could write up two "Fair" lists i.e. give him 100 additonal points especially using power levels (you take the min wargear he takes a lot of it...)

Also consider reading over the Nid rules as well before the game starts.
(or at least the following article https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Tyranids(8E) ) it will let you know what his list can do so you can advise...

First game - no relics, warlord traits & hive fleets etc. - just get him used to the basic rules of his army (you could also play no psychic powers/psykers to start but both armies are psychic heavy).
next game add in <Hive Fleets> or Psychic powers, or one other special type rule.
and so on...

during the game - do not get bogged down in the details of what each unit can do.

Do you have either of the Chapter Approved books or do you want to use one of the main rulebook missions?

Play less than 1000pts, limit the number of auras and interactions to begin with.

Play a simple capture objective(s) or kill points mission. Only War will do fine as a starter or just simplify an Eternal War mission.

Yeah, I find a pretty simple "place out 4-6 objectives, each objective is worth 1 point if you hold it at the end of the turn" type missions work best for teaching new players.

People too often fall into the trap of "to keep things simple lets just play kill each other." This leads to bad games much more often than a mission that deprioritizes killing.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

As mentioned already, the absolute best basic, starter mission is Only War from the Battle Primer (also in the Rulebook).

I highly recommend using Power Level to start as well. Start at 25 PL (which is approx. 500 matched play points) until the basics are understood and then ramp up to 50 PL (approx. 1000 matched play points).

I do not recommend cutting out any rules. This could have them develop bad habits from the onset. Remember, they're going to be like a sponge absorbing as much information as they can; don't fill them with bad information (i.e. cutting corners by eliminating rules) or unintended complications because you assumed some rules (e.g. warlord trait, faction specific rules, relics, etc.) will be too much too fast.
Just try to help them remember things if they forget and reinforce the point that it's OK to forget - there's no such thing as a perfect game of W40K.

Yep, as suggested started with a supe simple mission, and then don't use the following:

1) Warlord Traits
2) Stratagems
3) Relics
4) Psychic powers, etc.

Basically start without the extra bits and add them on each game or two. If he played in 5th he's obviously a wargamer and will pick it up pretty quick. Also if you're competent with both armies, you should design both armies to be similar in strength/ability/usefulness. When I demo games I create two army lists from my two armies. They're very 'White Dwarf" style armies, no spamming, no mis-matches, etc.

Eternal War, The Relic

The Relic is a fantastic mission to teach 40k with. It’s a simple goal - hold this item at the end. But it has the classic secondary objectives as well! So players can win even if no one holds the relic.

THERE IS ONLY WAR!

on the forum. Obviously

Only War, start at 500 points, not 1000. 1000 is too big for an introductory game.
500 points should give you an HQ and a few units, which is all you need to teach to basics.
Don't introduce things like faction traits or relics, just start with the basics.

Thanks for the sugestions.

Just to point out the guy is not an idiot... Hes clued up on the codex and the core rules and has prior edition experience. He's not a complete noob that has never played with miniatures before.

I appreciate people trying to help but I dont agree with suggestion to cut out traits, auras etc or strategems.... These things are at MASSIVE key parts of the game... Otherwise might as well not bother rolling dice and just talk about it...

When he goes on to play someone else he will be short changed by the experience IMO.."well that guy never told me about auras range, traits, psychic and strategems are not optional?"
I'm not planning to grind him into dust and run a hardcore cut throat tactica but I think he needs to experience all phases and mechanics of the game. He will learn from the mistakes I will let him take back but I think its important to have all the pieces of the puzzle. He has the models for 1000 and it was his suggestion as he has a full army ready to go and wants to play with his toys.

I am very grateful for the mission suggestions and people trying to help.
I think I might have not made myself clear on my OP position so apologize about that!

I know people want to help and I'm sorry if I sounded like an un-appreciative jerk.

Eternal War missions and deployments- the best choices.

Something easy, like pitched battle and kill points or bases.

OP, all the friends I introduced to 8th were gaming veterans and we still had to limit the number of interactions and introduce over a few games. I hope you enjoy your game, but I’d heed some of the advice above. Starting with a full 1K game with all rules in operation is a steep learning curve. It’s a headache remembering all your army’s rules and interactions when you’ve been playing 8th for two years let alone right out of the gate!

I personnaly never learned a game to someone at that scale. What I do is make up a series of little missions, going from a few infanterymen fighting then adding rules and types of unit in each mission. It's worked good enough until now.

40k: Necrons/Imperial Guard/ Space marines
Bolt Action: Germany/ USA
Project Z.

Thanks guys. We ended up playing vital intelligence and it went splendedily. The main thing was to go over key rules and he wa son top of auras etc and to be honest I only had to explain a couple things.

His horde wiped the floor with me but it wasnt entirely one sided. I made my list sub optimal on purpose cos i didint want to thrash him and I learned some cool stuff to because I never played nids before. Its all power armour everywhere.....
