We'll find out soon enough eh.

I'm trying to find a good phone for my grandad. He had a set of BT Freestyle 750 handsets that did him fine, but the charging pins on the base unit have gone wonky and he's not comfortable trying to remember to always swap the two handsets around between the base unit and the bedroom one so both handsets stay charged up. I've not been able to find the same phones new any more.

Finding a replacement however is proving to be a total fething nightmare. I've now had to return three different phones because they're not loud enough(he needs hearing aids but point-blank refuses to get them). Has anyone else run into a similar issue that can recommend something? When I say loud, I mean loud, like double the max call volume on a normal landline handset.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

There's a whole sub genre for the hearing/visually impaired.

Not a recommendation, but give these guys a look as a jumping off point.

Unfortunately found and dismissed all of those handsets based on reviews that stated their default volume isn't actually any louder than regular phones, it only gets louder when you press the "boost" button on them, which apparently takes a dump on the sound quality, and isn't ideal anyway because it doesn't persist you have to reactivate with every call. This is why I've been tearing my hair out - I just want to find a handset where I can put the volume up to maximum for him and it will be loud, like the phone he's used up until now.

I suspect there may be an issue there around legislation meaning manufacturers have to limit output volume these days for fear of damaging the hearing of people with normal hearing.

The only other options I can suggest is persuade him an aid is the only way forward and get an induction loop compatible set, or poke around the RNID website and see if there's any that are consistently recommended.

I have a feeling there was some volume based legislation that went EU wide around 2013/4 for a lot of devices, certainly mobiles phones & music players went down a fair chunk

If I remember right from a colleague at work what you need to look for is an amplified phone marketed as for sever hearing loss

(or trawl ebay for used freestyle 750s https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=+BT+Freestyle+750&_sacat=0 which may be easiest, especially if he's getting a touch forgetful as he may never get used to using something different)

Believe me, I've tried, he won't have it. Keeps insisting "ach it's just wax it'll pass". The fact it hasn't passed in ten years doesn't seem to affect the vehemence with which he refuses, at this point bringing it up just starts an argument.
