Two halves of a styrofoam ball, covered in spackling compound, with a clear Plexiglas disc for the rings.

I cut out a circle of clear plexi-glass, about 1/8" thick, the drilled a hole in the dead center. I put a round-headed screw in the hole and tightened down a nut on the other side, pinching the plexi-glass between them. I put it screw-head down on the top of my snap-on toolbox (any flat, smooth, solid surface will do) and gave it a spin, just like a top. I thinned my paints - various shades of brown, orange, and white - and very gently held my brush over the spinning clear circle. Varying shades/colors, varying circle widths, and a matte clear-coat later, viola!
