This weapon replaces a chainsword

Chaos Lord has 4 base
2 x Chain Sword, so +1 for Chainsword, +1 for duplicate weapon

Then upgrade a chain sword to the relic, and it has d3 bonus attacks.

So 7 to 9 Attacks? or is the +1 attach for chainsword replaced with d3 attacks, meaning 6 to 8 attacks?

You only calculate the number of attacks based on the end state for your wargear.

So, without the Codex in front of me, I'm thinking it would be...

4 base + 1 for the chainsword + d3 for the relic. In other words, 6-8 attacks.

You only consider what weapons you have in your final loadout. Also, you don't get +1 attack for a duplicate weapon...

If you have a Chainsword and Blade of the Hydra, you get your base attacks with any weapon, +1 with the chainsword (per it's special ability) and +D3 with Blade of the Hydra (per it's special ability) .

So then...

Blade of the Hydra swings [6 to 8 times] or is it [5 to 7 times and the vanilla chainswords gets its own swing]

I feel like I'm overthinking this, because the blade of the hydra is still a chainsword.

The Blade of the Hydra is not a chainsword, anymore than a Bolter is a Chainsword. The Blade of the Hydra REPLACES the chainsword entirely.

And like I already said, you get your base attacks with any weapon, +1 with the chainsword (per it's special ability) and +D3 with Blade of the Hydra (per it's special ability). You're not forced to make your base attacks with The Blade of the Hydra.

ah, I get it now. I was thinking base attacks, plus bonus attacks with specific weapons because of those specific weapons. With it being all base attacks and modifiers to base attacks its much simpler.

You get:

4 attacks (can be made with either the Chainsword or the Hydra)
1d3 attacks with the Hydra
1 attack with the Chainsword

Make sense?

And note that you don't get an extra attack for duplicate weapons unless that weapon says so (like Tw. If you arm a model with two Power Swords or two Power Fist, you don't get an additional attack.

I just happens that since any Chainsword give you an additional Chainsword attack, two Chainswords give you two additional Chainsword attacks.
